I have had nothing but problems since last August with my feet. It started with plantar faschitis and now I have been told I have this high arch issue which is causing more issues. I had a gait analysis and was put in different shoes which has helped. I stretch on an incline board and that has helped the faschitis. The doctor told me that his wife had the same problem. She got a mini-bunion under her little toe like I have, and ended up having surgery and he told me "she doesn't run anymore." I have been really down in the dumps since hearing this. Any advice out
there that will keep me running? I have read so much conflicting advice and articles that I'm confused. Thanks!
High arch stiff feet are very challenging. Take a look at short article High Arch Stiff Feet. Select shoes that are biased towards cushioning. Replace shoes "early and often". Shoe with a proportionally higher heel or adding a heel lift to shoe may provide some benefit.

There is a connection between PF and Hypothyroidism. Low thyroid hormone allows overproduction by fibroblasts of substances that weaken the organized collagen structure of the plantar fascia. As an RD, you know the other part about optimizing nutrition for collagen repair, but dietary interventions may be useless without the proper hormone balance. Ironically, water in the plantar fascia is part of the disruptive process, so hydration is not as much of an issue as I once thought.
Some symptoms of cramping have been reported as a side effect of thyroid meds, so it might be wise to look into the flexibility of your muscles as well. The Tibialis Posterior muscle in the rear calf between the bones is a plantarflexor, but also maintains the arch.
Has your arch always been high? Arches have been known to raise and lower during a lifetime, so I would not be too certain the condition is permanent.
Regarding thyroid, overexposure to fluoride has been known to impair, even destroy, thyroid function. It may be too late to address this, but it needs to be taken into account.
Wow! You mention low thyroid and I have had hypothyroid for about 15-16 years and been on L-thyroxine. I had every symtpom listed in the video and was told my levels were going down but not that my blood tests were still in a normal range. I also live in town and drink flouridated water. The question that you ask about my arch is interesting because it seems that I had flatter arches when I was younger back when you got measured when you bought shoes (back in the stone age:) Both my parents have hypothyroid and I always assumed that it was inherited.
Of course the doctor draws my blood every 6 months and I haven't had my meds adjusted in years as my tests were ok. I have been drinking more water to help with the "constipation" issues of hypothyroid and to hydrate after exercise. I am going to stop with the city water until my blood test in June and see what my thyroid level does. Thanks for the info. I found it fascinating!
Hello Back! I just wanted to let you know that I went in and had my TSH drawn. I had switched over to a filtered water system for my drinking water. My
TSH level was over 10.0, the highest it has ever been. In reviewing some articles, this may have been contributing to a lot of my symtpoms. I have had my meds adjusted and will get it checked in 3 months again (vs. 6 months like I had been doing). I think that getting away from flouridated city water may have been a huge part of it. Thank you so much for the article and the advice! Getting ready to run a 5k this weekend and we will see how things go.
