speed or distance

So I finally am able to run (well, jog really) for 30 minutes, but I am no where near a 5K, more like 2.5 miles.

So, should I try to keep running until I get to the full 5K or work on increasing my speed and only go for 30 minutes?

    HI Nancy,

I am by no means an expert, as I am still working on Couch 2 5K (at W6D2 tomorrow), but my plan is that if I reach thirty minutes of running and am not running the entire 5K distance, when I finish C25K I will start trying to run until I can reach the 3.1 miles.  I feel like C25K gives you a great jumping off point to knowing your body's capability of running longer distances, and allows you to know that you can build upon what you've already accomplished.  I know you can meet your goal!

    Happy running!

    Hi Nancy,

I am in the same boat. I am on week 9 and I plan to keep adding a couple minutes on each week (like we have been doing) until I reach the 5K.

I was say focus on additional miles Nancy because your speed is going to naturally improve with the endurance from longer distances.  If you start out too quickly, then, of course, you are more likely to become exhausted sooner than expected.

Sounds like you are on target and making great progress.

    Wishing you all the best!

Nancy, you might want to check out the One Hour Runner program. It takes you, timewise, from where C25K stops to being able to run for an hour over a period of 10 weeks. I couldn't find the original site, but here is a copy of it. http://attheedgeofthewall.blogspot.com/2011/11/one-hour-runner-ohr.html

Building endurace is most important for beginners. When you are able to run comfortably for a longer time period, then you can adjust your weekly schedule to have some shorter distances and concentrate on speed and foot turnover, and then a long run once a week for endurance. Also, know that speed will come with endurance. So, build your base then add in speed.  Just my 2 cents worth.

BTW, Congratulations on finishing the program to running 30 minutes! Great job!!! Keep up the good work!

Nancy, that is awesome! Congratulations on running your first 5K. You now have a pr (personal record) that you can strive to improve. Good for you in sticking to this and losing the 30 lbs. As you continue to run, you will continue to improve in stamina and speed. Keep us posted on your progress.

Nancy - thank you so much for your story!  It is so encouraging to me.  I am on W1D3.  I can do 60 seconds of running (ok, slow jogging) at a time, but can't even imagine doing 5k.  Thanks for giving me the hope that I can do it!

Slowpoke? If you finish a 5K, in my mind the time is of little importance in comparison to the will to see something through. Time can always be improved upon, but if you can never beat the thrill of just accomplishing that goal. Every one of us regardless of time have one thing in common-we don't give up.
