Mkay /AZ1414  Thanks for the support. I was soooooo looking forward to running Indy Sat. However this was a tough crazy training cycle. Glad it's over. Will run the next 4 weeks for sheer enjoyment. Then with a better frame of mind and body I'll kick it up as I prepare for Chicago in Oct.

AZ, Urun and Webpro, I fought against walk breaks in the beginning of this journey but I am now a convert. I wonder if I couldn't have added the distance i'm running now without the breaks but I know that adding distance is a lot more comfortable using intervals. I know they will carry me through the HM. We newbies are so fortunate to have your wisdom! I can't believe I just finished my last run before Sunday. The wait is going to kill. How do you deal with the anticipation stress? BTW, Urun, I took what I thought was your approach with my knee and it seems to have worked - holding my breath. I coupled PT stretching and icing with Aleve for the inflamation with slightly shorter training runs. It's still sore but I don't need to curse every time I stand and walk just to move past the pain. Didi, I'm using your fueling.

    Thanks, all! Keep running !!

Mary Kay, I wish you the best for your race on Sunday. It's going to be so much fun!!! Rest, relax, keep hydrated and fueled. You have prepared well and you're going to have a great run. Your previous aches and pains are going to be a distant memory. Keep smiling!

I've had some really good runs lately. Training with my husband is so much more fun than training alone. We run together three days a week. I usually throw in an extra day or two of running after we hit the gym. I've started doing squats again - I'm in pain! I'm determined to continue to do them every day, gradually increasing the number of sets until I'm ready to add a hop at the finish of each squat. I'm working on strengthening the quads, hamstrings and glutes. I want to give my knees a fighting chance before I ramp up the long runs.

Webpro, glad to hear you are going to be running for the sheer joy of it. What a wonderful way to run!

Stay positive and stay healthy, all.  And keep posting!

Good luck in the Flying Pig.  There may be only one hill, but it's a doozy.  I ran Nashville over the weekend, and the combination of hills and heat did in a lot of good racers.  What I'm saying is be thankful for the 6:30 start and get in an early corral.  I started at 7:06 AM and by the time mile 11 rolled around the temps had risen enough to really amp up an already challenging course.

Also, the walk/run approach really does help, particularly when distances get past 5-6 miles.  I know it's sped me up and I think it's cut back on the injuries.  My problem is that I want to go farther and faster, so injuries have become more routine.  This weekend was the first time I've raced healthy in a long time, so I'm grateful for what I have.

So kids, is there a solution to the problem of chafing from underwear elastic – other than going commando?

Having an up-and-down week; I pooped out on my track workout Monday night but managed a 9-mile progression run early this morning just fine.  My legs complained about climbing the stairs at work afterwards, though!  I'm just glad I'm not training over the summer for a fall marathon this year.

Guayaquilwriter, I’m glad to hear that your wife is recovering and hope the trend continues.

Mary Kay, you definitely don’t want to move to AZ to escape pollen!  We didn’t have enough already from the palo verde, acacia, and desert broom, so we also imported tons of Bermuda grass and orange trees!  I actually love the smell, and downtown Mesa is very pretty in the spring when all the yellow flowers fall off the palo verde and form drifts on the sidewalks - but I've been doubling up on my antihistamines and it’s still sneeze city!

Az, Shiprock sounds very scenic – is it also a flat course?  You’ll have to tell us all about it!

Heading up to Prescott Friday evening for Whiskey Row…. Good luck to everyone else who’s racing this weekend!

    -Nan

Nan~Barely There($$) and Ex Officio($$$$) micro-fiber UW both have turned over seams at waistband and leg openings - no elastic touches skin. 2-in-1 shorts work well for me, light compression short sewn into a pair of shorts(Brooks, Nike, REI). Have a great run at Whiskey Row!

MaryKay, AZ, Kirk & anyone I've missed!~Big race weekend coming up. Safe travels to/from your respective HM races this weekend.  Run strong!

Urun2me~I'm so excited you are running the Lakefront Marathon in my town.  Beautiful route and well run event. Sorry your husband wasn't able to register, it filled up fast this year!  All the best in your training!

Welcome all new poster!  Love to read about your triumphs and challenges.  Keep it up!

Thanks Marie, Kathy, Mary Kay, Nan, Dan and all for your well wishes!  I was doing fine in handling the nerves until today.....My last run was 10 miles on Sunday, only walking since then to rest the hip.  No pain, just an occasional ache.  Continuing my daily stretches and foam rolling. The hill climb at mile 4.5 to 5.5 will tax my hip, and I intend to walk that portion.  The weather report for Saturday's HM has been changing daily, from 40% chance of  thunderstorms to partly sunny, 50 degrees, the latter is what I'm hoping for!  The training is done for this event, and I have learned so much.  Thank you all for your generous advice and sharing your training experience.  I'm so grateful for it.

    Run strong, friends!

Went for an very, very slow easy 3 mile run this morning to take the edge off.  I just wanted to know my hip would hold up.  Used my original C25k route to remind me how far I've come.  HM here I come!

Best of luck in your HM this weekend! You are well prepared and deserve a great day. Push all negative thoughts right out of your mind and find only the positive in every little thing. You're going to amaze yourself!!

Six weeks into running and my husband has finally learned about those little voices in his head. I pushed the pace in this morning's run to show him what it would feel like. It's been my job to convince him to not worry about running slowly at the beginning of each run, to ease into the run and then have enough at the end to finish strong. More than once I've had to ask, "where's the fire?" So, this morning I started us out relaxed yet at a good clip. By our third interval (of 13) I could tell we were running well. I decided to keep a solid pace and pull him along at the end. As predicted, the last two intervals were a struggle for him. I could tell by his breathing and body position that he was fighting the urge to stop. Rather than run slightly behind him as I usually do, I stayed just in front of him to motivate him to not give in to the little voices. He stayed right with me and was pleased with the overall workout. We both agreed, however, that regular runs do not have to be done at that pace. Regular runs should make  us feel tired at the end, but not exhausted like we did this morning. He's learning! He's also learning that running endorphins are the greatest!

URUN, I need you with me on my runs!  I usually do my training runs by myself, but when I do group runs it makes a world of difference to team up with a good pacer or pace group to keep me going.

I did an easy 40 mins. last night and it wasn't so easy.  It was my first time running with a little heat and humidity it made a noticeable difference.  I keep telling myself that it's all GOOD TRAINING and makes me stronger!!!  Tonight is another 40 mins. and a warmer and even more humid day - YAY, such GOOD TRAINING, LOL!!!!

An overall thanks to everyone who posts here.  I don't always get a chance to respond to every post but I get something out of each and every one.  I'm so glad I found this group!

Judy, great advice! It's supposed to be 91! Yes, thank goodness we start early and I will be prepared now. Thanks. In all good conscience, I can't get in an early corral. I'll be lucky if I can avoid being last, I am so slow.

URun, loved your training report. You are a fantastic coach!

Sue P. someone told me it's all good and they were, of course, right. Everyone has bad runs. If you have a bunch together, look to see if you recently added distance or time per week. When you increase, you can expect to see some resistance in the beginning until your body adjusts. Also, everyone slows down when it gets hot and humid together. Asthma/allergies made it hard for me to breathe in the beginning and once I started using an inhaler my runs were much more manageable.

Debra, Nan, and anyone I've forgotten who is racing this weekend, run like the wind and have fun out there!

Marie! Congrats to you and your daughter on signing up for the Goofy Challenge!! And YES! You most certainly can do a Marathon and do it well!!

Good luck to all that are racing this weekend! Just relax and enjoy the ride! Everything is good! I will be watching for race reports from you all.

This is my first week back to running a normal schedule! I must say that 2 months with very little running does takes its toll on my running performance, but it could be worse. I just have to work my way back up. I can tell that my spin classes and running on the elliptical has helped me to sustain most of my fitness. My biggest hurdle is adjusting to running in a different type of shoe. I have run in Newton's for the past 2 years and have loved them, but my Dr. thinks they contributed to or caused my Morton's Neuroma and I think he may be correct. I can run without pain in my new shoes but it is just different. I thought I would try to run in my Newtons again since I no longer have any pain in my toe, but as soon as I took the first step my toe started hurting. I think it was the shoes that caused my problem.
