Anyone vegan or eat "raw"?

A friend of mine is interested in changing her diet to vegan, possibly a raw diet. Just curious if anyone has any info on these topics, perhaps can suggest any books that might be helpful for her. If she wants to make these changes, I want her to do it in the healthiest way possible!

Re: Anyone vegan or eat "raw"?
Is she a vegetarian already? Have her try a vegan diet and then she can decide about going raw vegan. There should be some online resources out there for her. There are a lot of negative opinions on a raw diet. As someone who professionally gives nutritionally advice, a raw diet can be damaging, severely, to the body in Chinese medical theory. Have her look into macrobiotics, that may be what she is looking for.

There is at least one runner here who loves their vegan raw diet and can share their experience with you and your friend.

Re: Anyone vegan or eat "raw"?
I am "at least one" who LOVES my raw diet.

I've been 100% for a year now. I've lost 85 lbs and all of my health issues have completely resolved themselves (arthritis, rash that I've had all of my adult life, painfully dry elbows, bad complexion, there's more, but I can't even remember anymore!).

I've gone from zero energy and having to nap every day to running eight times a week, kickboxing three times a week and weightlifting three times a week, all with no injuries and no sickness. (Previous to raw, evertime I started to run, I'd get an upper respritory infection!)

I went from being a lacto-ovo vegetarian (well actually a choco-cheeso vegetarian!) to being raw, but I know several people who've gone raw straight from a standard american diet, and thrived on it. Taking "steps" is not necessary. If she's ready to go raw, she should do it.

The book that made it real easy for me is "Living on Live Food" by Alissa Cohen. www.AlissaCohen.com.[/URL" target="_blank">

A great place to find a ton of raw websites is
http://rawwideweb.com/browse//1/5/[/URL" target="_blank">

Once you do the research, and realize how people are finding the health and energy they knew they were being cheated out of on a cooked food diet, you'll wonder why anyone cooks anything!

I've been vegetarian for about 3 years and vegan for about 1. I really like this book: Becoming Vegan: The Complete Guide to Adopting a Healthy Plant-Based Diet. Your friend may find it useful as well....gives lots of sounds nutritionally information and some advice about avoiding any nutritional pitfalls. Although I don't like the "Complete Idiots" books, there is a new vegan one that's good. The author has this website--http://www.veganchef.com/

Re: Anyone vegan or eat "raw"?
I like to eat some of my veggies raw, but others I like cooked because the nutritional benefits are greater when they're cooked. In particular...tomatoes. Lycopene is more readily available in cooked tomatoes than raw ones.

The "Becoming Vegan" book is excellent - it's just good information on nutrition, period. I gave my copy to a non-veg friend who wanted to improve her diet. It is helpful even if you didn't want to become vegan.
You might also have her check out veggieboards.com, which is a forum like this one for vegetarians/vegans/raw foodists. Lots of people who are actually practicing this diet can answer questions from first hand experience.

Re: Anyone vegan or eat "raw"?
I have been vegan for almost 6 months, converting from ovo-lacto vegetarianism, which I practiced for about 10 years. I have never felt better, or had softer, clearer skin. Note that I am only slightly in the animal rights camp, and mostly choose this as a health/lifestyle option rather than a political stance.

Some sites to look at for interesting and informative discussion on veganism:

Sorry to hi-jack the thread for a moment- but Jill- weren't you somehow terribly disappointed when the son's school let out and there weren't daily posts?!?! Addicted :-)

I don't have any children but admire her desire to establish healthy eating habits with her son.

YES Lisa!! So dissapointed! I still check it from time to time to see what she's having for a picnic!! I love it....I don't have children either but still get great lunch ideas--I certainly didn't have lunches like she makes when I was a kid!! I think she's homeschooling in the fall and may not continue posting.... It's a great site. There are lots of other good vegan blogs too...great way to get some new ideas.

Re: Anyone vegan or eat "raw"?
Another good book for learning about going vegan (and includes some recipes) is:

The Vegan Sourcebook
by Joanne Stepniak

Kmik,

Do you have Rainbow Green Live-Food Cuisine (Paperback)
by Gabriel Cousens? I just ordered it and wondered if you have an opinion on it.

I've been vegan for about 8 years and have been eating more and more raw. I bought this book to learn more and try some new recipes.

Re: Anyone vegan or eat "raw"?
Spidergirl... sorry, haven't been on in a while :-)

No, I've not read his book. My favorite raw authors are Alissa Cohen, and Victoria Boutenko. But I've also read Paul Nisan, Brian Clement and a couple others. I find it interesting to read everyone's different opinions, and just take something from each one to find my own approach.

Re: Anyone vegan or eat "raw"?
I follow the McDougall Diet and I am loving it. Not only has my face cleared up after years and years of acne problems (I am almost 35), but my menstrual cramps and headaches have vanished. I have been an ovo-lacto vegetarian for many years, but taking out dairy, oils and excess fats has been life-changing. I also easily lost that 10 lbs. I have been carrying around for years.

I am not vegatarian or anything...i consider myself flexatarian..I try to eat several vegetarian meals a week and not rely too much on meat....
but that being said...
I think that the vegetarian lunch-box is great!!! I am definitely going to use some of these recipes on myself and my boyfriend - kid friendly is also boyfriend friendly (since i have no kids)...She is such a creative mom!
