What do you eat the day before a long run

I would love to get some ideas as to what and how often everyone eats before a long run. Thanks!

I eaither eat a protein bar or my new favorite a whole wheat bagel half, w/ pb, 1/2 c. strawberries and 1/2 c. skim milk. That seems to carry me through up to 2hr & 45 min. I haven't been gone longer than that yet.

Re: What do you eat the day before a long run
Preparing for a long run is similar to preparing for a marathon. It's not what you eat the day before, but what you eat in the days leading up to it that really matters.

Also, it depends on how long of a long run you're referring to. It also depends on what type of long run you intend to do. If you're making it a fast-paced run, then you'll definitely want to be better fueled than if you intend to make it a 'time on your feet', LSD run.

There are many variations of the long run, and many ways to prepare and fuel for it. It's also possible that you can endure a long run by eating very little on the day before.

It's up to you, your level of training, and your goals.

Good luck.

Re: What do you eat the day before a long run
I am a huge fan of chicken sandwich on whole wheat bun, cheese, lt mayo or a grain mustard, lettuce, tomato, and sprout sandwich, with a huge salad. I actually prefer that to a huge plate of pasta but if pasta-inclined, I go for chicken parm
and a salad.
Sometimes I will have pizza pre-marathon week.I add extra veggies.
For me, it is a focus on consistency rather than loading.I've got a reactive digestive system so I cannot try anything new the night before a marathon,at all.
I think it is trial and error, then sticking to your basics, whatever that may be individually.

Wow. A leon2 sighting. This is a good thing.

SaraAnne, when you say 'long run', how long?

Re: What do you eat the day before a long run
I think you are trying to relate too directly what you eat to your runs. I eat the same thing on any day of the week. The store of energy for a run is mostly in your glycogen reserves with some fat stores involved. Your glycogen stores are not significantly affected by what you eat the day before a long run provided it is adequate. Its a lot like filling a gas tank on a car. It doesn't matter which brand. So long as the tank is full you are fully fuelled for the max distance the tank will go. The purpose of the long run is to make the tank last as long as possible and perhaps to make it bigger but what you eat the day before will not have much effect.

There is a technique that may offer some possibility of forcing the tank to overfill. It has little to do with what you eat but rather how you rapidly empty the tank and refill it in the 24 hours before a run. Have a look at any reference to Carbo Loading[/URL" target="_blank">

Re: What do you eat the day before a long run
Carb loading is appropriate for any long run that puts you in a position of using up the glycogen that you have stored up in your muscles and liver. For most of us, that means runs lasting three to four hours.

Proper carb loading can add to the amount of glycogen you have stored away in your muscles by as much as 50%, but don't wait until the day before your run to start. For the two to three days before your long run or marathon, try to pack away 7 to 10 grams of complex carbs per kilogram of body weight. Concentrate on foods such as pasta, rice, potatoes, and breads. If properly done, you should see as much as a five pound increase in your weight. Fortunately, this increase is mostly glycogen and water, so it will pretty much disappear after your long run or marathon.

You should also concentrate on getting yourself well hydrated at the same time. All those extra carbs will require extra water as well. A word of warning though, carb loading is not easy. It will be a real challenge to put away that many carbs in such a short time.

Re: What do you eat the day before a long run
The day before my long ( up tp 150 minutes) I eat bacon, eggs salmon and steak.

I run early in morning and eat nothing at all before the run.I do drink some L- Glutamine in water and take a bottle of same with me on the run.

I am very low carb which I presume you are not.On my diet the above is what I do which works just fine for me.

BTW you might want to tell all just how far your long run is and at what tempo etc.

Have an awsome weekend !!

In the sense that you are able to complete the distance, it does work for you, but any serious runner knows that carbohydrate is the body's preferred fuel during high intensity exercise. If you want to run well, eat plenty of carbs.

Re: What do you eat the day before a long run
The same as I do any other day.

I've tried carb loading before marathons but I don't see the need to eat more the day before a training run (unless its a test of what I will do before a long race).

I'll hydrate of course.
