Wave, nod or ignore...What do you do?

I am a mornign runner. Due to my work scheduled my weekday runs start at 03:20 hours for 5 miles four days of the

work week.  However Sarturday is my "long run". currently that is 11 miles and growing. I am usually out the door

on Saturday about 07:00 hours.

Now running early in the pre dawn hours i dont encounter anyone toher then newspaper delivery men, cats and an

occasional racoon but on the weekend I encounter many runners, walkers, and bikers.

I am a friendly person by nature and l always nod wave or salute my fellow runners I encounter.  What amazes me is how many

people ignore me and do "nothing" back.

So my questions is what do you do when you are ouit running and encounter other runners, walkers or bikers?

Wave, nod, salute, ignore?

I was just wondering.

I'm not a morning runner...I run in the evening time varies.  I usually don't encounter too many people, when I do I at least smile, occasionally I wave.  I have been so in the zone though, that I have passed a person or two that didnt even notice especially if its my tough run of the week.  The weekends, like you I encounter more people.  I am usually the one who smiles or nods first.  And no it is not always reciprocated

I usually nod at least, sometimes I say hi back . I notice that I don't usually initiate the hi though unless I'm out running during an 'event' where people I already know from a group are joining up at their own pace and we are running in a certain 3 or 5 mile loop or out and back. One thing you might consider is that some people zone out when they run. If I run alone I am usually blasting music in my earphones and I also tend to zone out where it's safe. It may not be intentional ignoring, someone may really be so into their run that they don't notice or hear you. If I pass walkers or runners who are together talking, I don't always say hi or good morning because.... they are having a conversation and I have music blasting in my ears.

Wave, nod or ignore...What do you do?

During the week I run before work and am usually on the road around dawn or just afterwards. On the weekends it's typically midmorning. Most of the time I run in a relatively quiet residential suburb and there's a modest sprinkling of other runners along with walkers, cyclists, dog walkers, etc. Out of courtesy I'll usually smile and nod at them as I pass. About half of them return the favor, and the other half ignore me. Quite honestly, it doesn't bother me to be ignored. Some people just don't like to acknowledge strangers, and a lot of people are in their own zone early in the morning.

Yup, I'm with Crl8.  I'll almost always wave or say Hi, but I don't care a bit if the others aren't in a mood to respond.

I'm happy to be out running and the rest is gravy.

Wave, nod or ignore...What do you do?

I would definitely wave, nod or say hello back if someone happened to do so to me. I live in a city and run after work on a road that is very crowded with runners, walkers, bikers, and skaters. If I started waving at everyone, I would have my hand up my entire run haha. I also agree with the pp that sometimes I just get into a zone when I am running and I may not even notice if someone said hello.

I mainly run in the dark before work.  When it is light enough to see others, I generally wave, or at least nod.

It's just general politeness to acknowledge your fellow humans as you pass by. Especially, if you're both doing something that binds you together, like running! But I never take it personally if the other person is in a distant mood, I just try to let it go and enjoy the run.

I usually say hello or wave. Very few people on my route reciprocate and that inspires me to keep doing it until they do!

I will add this - I never make eye contact with drivers or wave to cars (on straightaways) because I don't want the driver to get target fixation and run me down.

Wave, nod or ignore...What do you do?

I usually run in the mornings through my suburban neighborhood (not on busy streets but in a residental neighborhood). I always smile and wave at everyone I see (including cars). I want them to know that I am aware of them and if anything were to happen to me they will be able to say "oh yeah, I saw her". Plus, I always hear people saying how miserable runners look, so I make sure to smile, that way I at least look like I'm having fun.

I'm also a morning runner. I start my Saturday morning long runs at about 0600 usually. I typically encounter a fair bit of bikers, walkers, joggers, etc by the time I'm done. I always hold a hand up in a quick friendly wave like motion and say "mornin". Most of them that aren't wearing some sort of headphones typically will say hi, hello or good morning back. It seems more and more people where an iPod, etc and most of them do not respond at all. Maybe they're just lost in their tunes and don't even see my wave, I'm not sure. But, I'd rather be overly friendly and get no response. Just my personality type.

I usually nod or say good morning unless the person seems to be going pretty hard or in their own zone. For me it's encouraging encountering and greeting other runners on early morning runs. On the weekends I usually run in an area with a good number of walkers, runners, and bikers so acknowledging everyone would be nearly impossible and I get the feeling other people realize this too so we all just accept it.

I ran a new route a few weeks back, every single person waved, smiled, or gave a nod as we passed.  I was surprised because it was a beautiful night and lots of people were out.  It made me laugh when I got to the other side of the lake and passed the same people again and they smiled or nodded.  Good ettiquette between walkers/runners/cyclists, people were very aware of people passing and staying to the right with strollers or walking.  I will definitely be running around that lake here and there through out the summer.

I am an early morning runner and I always nod or wave when passing other runners (or walkers).  I usually get an acknowledgement back.  It's just that "kindred spirit" sort of feeling and I admire anyone who is out getting some exercise in so seems appropriate to exchange greetings...  Of course, I live in an area of the midwest where people exchange greetings with strangers a lot anyway.
