C25K- Couldn't finish 2 mile run. What now?

Hi,

This might be a dumb question with no "right" answer, but I figured I'd ask. On Monday, I was supposed to do my Week 5 Day 3 run for Couch to 5k. I haven't had any problems completing other workouts, but this one just leveled me. I've been running for distance. At my speed, that would have corresponded to 22.5 minutes. Instead, I could only eke out 16.5, in considerable discomfort. Then I took a 4 minute walking break and finished the last 5.

What should I do now?

  • Repeat Week 5 Day 3
  • Repeat all of Week 5
  • Reduce my speed from 5.4mph to something lower
  • Go on to week 6 (I believe days 1 and 2 look doable) and then at the end of week 6, aim for running 2.25, but be a little lenient with myself if I can't quite make it? And then just move up slowly from there
  • Something else

I'm leaning towards moving on to week 6. Not being able to run the 2 miles was a little deflating (okay, a lot). But I have loved this program, my quick improvements, and the incredible way I feel every time I finish a workout. I don't want to push myself so quickly that the program becomes impossible to enjoy. I also think I could probably complete the workout easily if I reduced my speed to something much slower- like a 12 minute mile. But I feel like once I reduce the speed, it's not coming back up any time soon...And I'd really like to finish the program faster, if possible. (I agreed to run a 5k with a friend of mine in mid-July. She's speedy and wants to slow down and run with me, which is great. But I'd like her to not start walking beside me )

But you know, I'll do what's smartest, even if that's a vague "try things and do what works best for you."

I'm completely new to C25K myself, but have done other similar interval plans in the past.

I'd say stop forcing yourself and repeat a week if you're not comfortable. I would definitely not skip ahead as it just gets harder later on. Repeat week 5 until you're comfortable you can manage the 2 mile run

There is nothing wrong or embarassing with repeating weeks - the 9 week schedule is a guideline, everybody is different. Personally I fully expect to have to repeat some weeks here and there.

If you're like me, it's possible the weather is playing into it.  On hot days, like yesterday, I could only get 1.5 miles in before I had to call it quits.  If you're running in heat, it may have affected you reaching your 2 mile goal.  If the heat is the problem, running early one morning or on a cooler day may surprise you with how well you can do.  Whether you want to press on to week 6 is up to you.  When I did the program, I found week 6 to be actually be easier than 5 because I was having an easier week.

go back a day to when you could complete the run, then try moving up again.  Weather is a huge factor, the heat will drain you quick.  good health, clean eating, replacing electrolytes, and replenishing with water.  Keep at it!  I just finally ran an entire 5k a couple weeks ago, just keep at it.  You'll get there!

If it was me, I would probably just redo that workout.  But you might take a look at other things that are going on.  I had a *rotten* run on Saturday--should have done 2.75 miles, but ended up walking about a half-mile.  Later that day I started getting a stuffy nose and itchy throat.  Now I have a full-blown cold.  I think my body was trying to tell me to take it easy.

Lysette1 do you run with music?  I have found that upbeat music makes me run longer.  I also keep my head up, and try to focus on my breathing.

    song suggestions:

We No Speak Americano (Yolanda Be Cool)

         My Body (Young the Giant)

Rack City (I like the rock remake, but both are good)

         3  (Brittney Spears)

         Rain over me (Marc Anthony)

         Send the pain below (Chevelle)

         Cold (Crossfade)

         Lollipop (Framing Hanley)

I like a lot of rock music so I guess its whatever you're into.  hope these help push you through your runs!

Lysette, like the others mentioned it could have been the weather, your health or other variable that interefered with your ability to finish. Put it to rest and move forward. Like someone else said, do not move on to the next weeks workout as one builds upon the other and you likely would be setting yourself up for defeat. Keep it fun and just try again. Repeat a week, I have and it helps. Instead of dwelling on "I only did X distance," reflect back on a time when you could barely run without being winded or tired and then look at how far you have come! I am with EMTTrix in that I run to music-sort of. I am a soldier and I run to Army Cadence and can do a 5K in under 30 minutes if I listen to it. It really does help to keep the pace and as EMTTrix also said, it helps you to run longer. I am 50 years old and a former smoker so just keep the faith in YOU and carry on!

Keep it up Lysette you'll get there!  It takes time to build muscle endurance, but your definitely on the right track!  20 minutes is awesome, be proud of yourself you earned it!

Lysette, don't worry so much about the distance & speed.  When you are starting out you should just focus on running the prescribed time or distance.  Speed will come later.  The more you run the more efficient you will be and you will get faster. Trying to run too fast too soon will only cause you to have more "horrible" runs. It could also cause injuries.

Try to remember that not every day feels easy. I have been running for 20 years &  have completed 4 marathons......but there are still days that a 3 mile run feels like a death march!  Slow down, take it easy, listen to your body and you'll be running farther & faster in no time & it will be more enjoyable.
