Re: My last run was...how was yours?

Hey everyone! Brand new to the site and to running. Just started back in March. All of my life I've hated to run. I was around 290 lbs in January of this year and decided it was time to make a change....a permanent change. I changed my eating habits and began walking in late March. One day I decided to try and jog part of the circle that we live on. I think I made it about 70 yards before I was done. I found out about C25k and ended up using a similar app called 5k Runner. I finished the entire training (had to repeat a couple of the days since I wasn't able to finish it the first time) but overall, I was absolutely AMAZED at how far I had come. I decided to go ahead and sign up for a local 5k race with the goal of simply finishing it. I walked some of it and finished in 31:52. I had already registered for the Joplin Memorial 5k that was 3 weeks later. I spent the rest of those days training for that and reading as much as I could, picking up tips and what not. That race was unbelievable....almost 1100 people ran the 5k (the 1/2 had over 1700). I was able to run the entire race without stopping and finished in 31:24. I learned a lot that day - the biggest thing being that I should have started MUCH closer to the front of the pack. I spent WAY too much time trying to weave in and out of people, slowing down, speeding up, zig zagging, etc.

Anyway, I am 100% HOOKED now! My wife can't seem to understand for the life of her, why I would PAY to enter and run a race. I also decided that rather than trying to train and do a 10k, that I am going to run my first 1/2 in October!! I'm super excited about it and fully expect that I'll be walking quite a bit but I WILL finish!!

I find myself looking for races to run all the time now. The biggest bonus to all this running and training?? As of today, I am at 216 lbs and in the best shape of my life! No more high blood pressure medication, no more borderline diabetes, no more high triglycerides, no more fatty liver!!! I have a right knee that I was told will need to be replaced (this was about 15 years ago when I was 30). Since I've started running, my knee has been sore after running but an ice pack seems to take care of it. It used to be that I couldn't even get through a day without a lot of pain in it. I owe EVERYTHING to running and I don't ever expect to stop....at least as long as my body will let me!

My last run was...how was yours?

jdcarnes, that is a wonderful story and very similar to mine.  Good work on your 5k runs!  Good work on the weight loss.  How much do you think a change in your diet had to do with your weight loss?  I can relate to your desire to run.

I started running in September 2010 at the age of 43 (almost 44).  My first run was the local 1/2.  It happened to be the best of my three times for a HM.  But (and this is a gentle warning) don't do too much too fast (it doesn't seem like you are).  I did and spent most of 2011 injured or in pain.  This year I've done two 5Ks, two 8Ks, and one leg of a marathon relay.  My first 1/2 will likely be July 4.  Take it easy in your training and up the mileage no more than 10% per week.  Stop when you feel sharp pain and rest, ice, compress, elevate.

I'm sure you'll be keeping up informed of your exploits.  Can't wait to see!

My last run was...how was yours?

Ran one of my usual routes (9.06 mile) yesterday.  This was the third time running this particular route.  First time 1:15:00, second time 1:14:53, this time 1:10:24!  What in the world got into me I'm not sure but it all just felt good and felt right.  First 4.53 miles - 35:56, second 4.53 miles - 34:28.  Hoping to run the Twin Cities 10-mile this fall.  At yesterday's pace should finish in 1:17 or so!

Loving the input from new reader's/runners.  Keep up the good work!

My last run was...how was yours?

Hi Apeppel, I've been barefoot since I started back running 2 years ago from "couch."  I use the Vibram Bikilas for trail running and races where I want to go faster and /or don't know the roughness of the course.  I love BF running just for the feeling of freedom and lightness.  These days, with the heat beginning to build up, I love to go for a run wearing nothing but my lycra shorts and a layer of sweat and  ending with a splash into the river.

My times have dropped nicely since I started, thanks mainly to having been able to run quite a bit more than would usually be likley right through the winter.  Way back in the mid-80's I ran a bit, clocking sub-60 minutes in the 10 mile and a 3:18 marathon.  I was pretty oblivious to how fast that was and had no idea whatsoever about how to run smart or "for the long run" and burned out badly.  Now I'm a lot older but somewhat wiser, too, I hope.

    Run well!

Re: My last run was...how was yours?

apeppel / aluecker  - Thanks for the kind words and encouragement! One of my biggest weaknesses is that I want it all....and I want it RIGHT NOW!!!     My main purpose behind skipping the 10k and going straight to the 1/2 was that I figured if I could do a 1/2 (or at least get through the training for it), I could go back at any time and be able to do a 5k or 10k whenever I wanted! I am shooting for April 28th, 2013 for my very first marathon - the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon! I'm excited....yet extremely nervous...about committing to that but I feel like I can be ready by then. We'll see!

As far as health issues, prior to starting my lifestyle change in January, my knees and my lower back were absolutely AWFUL! I walked bent over because my back hurt so bad. I'm extremely happy to report that with the weight loss, I walk normally again - in fact, several people at work have told me that I look 'taller' now! It's amazing what dropping 20, 30, 40 lbs or more will do!

To answer your question, my food choices were absolutely crucial to the success I've had. I am using MyFitnessPal and have simply followed a calorie counting regimen rather than worrying about specific macro percentages. I can't even fathom trying to do a low carb diet while training for these runs!! I stopped going to Wendy's, McDonalds, etc...every other day. I eat Subway sandwiches in a pinch. I buy and eat LOTS and LOTS of fruit (I'm not a veggie eater - as much as I'd like to be). Snacks consist of natural peanut butter with melba toast, greek yogurt, etc. Dinner is typically turkey, chicken or fish of some sort. I eat very little bread or red meat anymore. Clif bars have become a staple before and/or after a long run - or if I need to quickly add to my calories towards the end of the day.

All that said, I am certainly NOT above going to Culver's for a double cheeseburger and fries once a month or so!! I just don't make it a habit like I used to!

Again, thanks for all the kind words and I look forward to sharing my adventures, as well as reading about yours!

Re: My last run was...how was yours?

    Hey everyone!

I'm fairly new to running, got back on the wagon in April.  I used to run in the Navy, but never enjoyed it, but it's totally different this time around, I'm loving it!  I've been working on my diet and exercise seriously since December and have dropped down to 206 from a high of 270 last year.  I'm very surprised at how well my running is coming along in just a couple of months.  I'm doing 5 miles a day without any issues.  Ran my first race ever last week, a cross country 5k.  I was hoping to get under 30 mins, ran it in 25:45.  I was very happy with those results, especially since I felt like I could have pushed a lil harder.  But having never run a race before, I just wanted to get a feel for it, and most importantly, not injure myself.

Did my 5 miles this morning in 42 minutes (rough time, I need a watch with a timer).  It felt great, didn't feel like I was pushing hard, just a good everyday pace.  I'm doing an 8k on Saturday, so I'm going to do 5 miles tomorrow, take Thurs off, then a short run on Friday to prep for the race.  Hoping to get under 40 mins.

I'm not doing any particular trianing program, just running for fun and fitness.  I started out walking 2 miles, 3-4 times a week, then started running the same route, working my way up to 4.5 miles, 4 times a week, just bumped it to 5 miles this week.  Friday will be a short run, so I'll see about 22 miles this week, including the race.  Then I'll run 5x5 for a few weeks and probably do another race in July.  Might start looking to add a longer run on Saturdays.

One question, if I'm not feeling any negative affects, are there any issues with running 5-6 days a week?

jdcarnes - Congratulations on your progress!  Feels great, doesn't it?

Re: My last run was...how was yours?

Left somewhat early this morning - 7:20 - and did a fasted run. Temps were cooler, and I had enough energy for 31 minutes below 11mm pace, so that was good. I'll try to build up to 60 minutes of running before breakfast once a week. Gets me out the door early and burns more fat, so why not?

Got a short bike ride in later doing an errand.

jdcarnes - welcome and awesome story. Those 5K times are not "just finishing" times, definitely respectable and amazing for where you started. I always hated running, too, and took it up a few years ago at the age of 42. Now I love it. It's great to be able to do things now I couldn't do when I was 20.

Josephtree  - I haven't done barefoot running but keep thinking I should just take off my shoes and run around my local park some day. I did do a barefoot walk on the beach over the weekend with friends. The pace was slow compared to running, but it did give my foot muscles exercise.

julia66 - Sounds like we're the same age! I'll be 46 in October....2 weeks after I'm set to run my first 1/2. Thank you for the kind words on my 5k times! Initially, I simply wanted to finish the race but as time and my training went on, I realized that I could run the whole distance. My goal for the next 5k I run is to break 30:00. I had no idea what a 'good time' was for a 5k! I just did my first ever 6 mile long run last Saturday and finished it in 1:07:33. I was pretty pleased with that considering I've never run that far non-stop in my life!

Seven miles 53 min. 29 min out 24 min back..

dtothe2nd- five miles is a big milestone.  Add one mile a week to your long run. Don't go to 5-6 days till after running four months.

jdcarnes- You are doing great.  Its OK to skip to the 1/2. I lost 100lbs eight years ago. Feels great don't it.

runningangelinut- congrats on 10k good luck on Tri.

apeppel- You can run 10 miles at a much faster pace than 1/2. Love that distance.

Re: My last run was...how was yours?

    Hey Gang,

Just stopping in to say hello! I've been thinking about you all and sending good vibes to you and your families. I was a bit burnt out after my marathon and have eased way back on the running but have started up my fitness boot camp--I'm on week 2--so I haven't exactly been slacking either ;-)  This class is pretty intense. My arms were sore for 2 or 3 days after class. So far weather has allowed us to have classes outside which I like a lot. My short terms goals are obviously to get stronger and also to lose a few lbs. I'm hoping that will translate into faster/stronger running when I start training again. I've been running one or two 4-6 mile runs during week and longer 8 mile run on weekend.

Good luck to you all at achieving your running/fitness goals. I hope to go back and catch up on all the posts soon. And welcome to all of the newbies!

Re: My last run was...how was yours?

jd-your story is impressive!  go slow and steady to avoid injury and you will do great.

I'll be in your neck of the woods after the 4th of July.  Coming to Springfield area to inter my Mom's ashes at a small country cemetery where she was raised.  Lived the last 50 years in Wisconsin, but now going back to her roots.

The HM in October sounds interesting, especially since I spent first 10 years of my life in SE Kansas.  A little too far for me to come for a race though!

Running the same 5K on July 4 this year; since all my wife's family lives in the Madison/Deforest area I've invited/challenged all the nieces/nephews to run with me and I'll pay their registration fee.  Not sure how many will take me up on it, but it cold get expensive!   It will be a great time.

    Run and enjoy this week.

My last run was...how was yours?

jdcarnes - great story! congrats....the hardest step is always the first....and soon it becomes a slippery slope! have fun.  Funny part about mrs not getting the part about paying to run.   Since the Half is in october, im sure you can still squeeze in a 10k before then.

runningangelinvt - nicely done; good luck on your tri.

NHLA - nice work; i pay attention to your details, as you're a tad faster than I and i look at your progress as sort of goals for me...

I had a "bleh" run today; the usual 3.25mi, stopped a few times; then did weights at the gym (electing to skip the usual spin class).  But I needed more exercise, so i swam a good 500+ meters; a first for me. Like running, after the initial huffing and puffing of he first few laps i was able to get in a groove.

And today i received a box of black cherry shot bloks, a box of mini clif bars...and my first pair of compression socks! Terranss and I plan to hit a local trailhead saturday! starting around 5000' elev to about 7500' near Mt Baldy; 7miles.
