Are carbs which sugar bad for you?

http://www.kelloggs.co.uk/products/product.asp?id=73[/URL" target="_blank">

Half is starch and half is sugar (of all the carbs)...

Good or bad?

Thanks
Dan

Most processed cereals are full of sugar. Try oatmeal.

What do you expect from something called "Crunchy Nut Clusters Milk Chocolate Curls"? If I buy boxed cereal, I always look at the labels to see how much sugar is in it. The stuff I buy usually has less than 5 grams of sugar per serving.

No, I'm afraid we can't, because it's a meaningless question.

There are no good or bad foods*. There are only good or bad [b]diets[/i].

* I don't regard transfats as foods. Stop being picky.

I'm not surprised. That website isn't the clearest thing I've ever seen, and it doesn't seem entirely unbiased.

Maybe this would help: http://health.howstuffworks.com/carbohydrate-basics-ga.htm[/URL" target="_blank">

I wasn't asking for judgment on my diet...

I'm not sure you're in a place to get huffy puffy when your question was "are carbs which sugar bad for you?"

I seriously have zero idea what you're asking. So I think it was nice that anyone replied at all and what they said is true ... yes, that cereal seems to have many simple sugars and as cipher noted it's name is a big hint that it might.

If you feel you need simple sugars, eat it. If for some reason you don't want simple sugar in your diet, don't eat it.

The title of this post doesn't make any sense.

If the second ingredient of the cereal is sugar, it is probably best to skip it! Try something like oatmeal and add in your own stuff like berries and nuts or a much lower sugar cereal. Otherwise, you'll prolly be bouncing off the walls and then crash hard.

It makes more sense if you're familiar with the format of nutritional information on a UK food package - see the link the OP provided. Typically, the list gives total carbohydrates in grams, and breaks them down into starches and sugars - complex and simple carbs, basically.

The way this is set out is like the following (NB: I'm making up these numbers - they refer to nothing IRL):

Carbohydrates: 70g
of which starches: 30g
of which sugars: 40g

The OP is giving what he found on the box, rather than in the link he provided, since the information is presented rather differently there.

The OP is asking whether a breakfast cereal whose carbohydrate component is half simple carbohydrates is a good thing.

This entirely depends on the rest of the OP's diet. But we're not privy to that information. At the very least, though, an injection of sugars like that is going to give you an insulin spike. See the link I provided.

My advice about breakfast would also be to eat oatmeal. Mountaineer, in the UK that's known as "porridge". You make it with oats. You can do it in the microwave. If you want advice on how to make it, just ask. It's really, really cheap - maybe a penny a day.

But if you really like your Kellogg's cereal and it forms part of a balanced diet averaged over the rest of the day, then by all means go ahead.

Re: Are carbs which sugar bad for you?
I've tried all kinds of diets even to the point of going on the Zone diet where it was bascially all proteins and veggies and no carbs or hardly any carbs. I lost weight but felt deprived and hungry. Headaches, too.

What has worked for me was to replace my carbs with healthier choices. For example, I gave up on white carbs such as white bread, white rice, white pasta, processed baked goods and the like. I replaced those carbs with GrapeNuts, cream of wheat, oatmeal, dark rye or whole grain bread, yes on potatoes (but no on butter, sour cream, yes on nonfat sour cream, nonfat yogurt topping w/green onions or chives), and no on sweets, desserts, junk, chips, munchie-snacks, sodas etc. I drink a lot of water. Also, I made lentil soups and put some cooked brown rice in it and topped it with little cubes of tofu. Often times that was dinner, filling but I didn't gain weight on it; actually lost weight. I ate salads everyday either for lunch and/or dinner, fruit for snacks, soy milk or yogurt for inbetween meals, felt full but not stuffed and I lost weight! Within 2 - 3 weeks, I lost quite a bit of weight without feeling hungry all the time. Also, several days a week, I go vegetarian and on some days a little skinless chicken breast or fish. I cut out beef, deli-meats (ham, bacon, sausage), & pork. I really slimmed down to 118 lbs which is how I feel best for my 5' 6" height. I lost 30+ lbs post-baby fat this way.

Re: Are carbs which sugar bad for you?
Replacing fats with carbs will not be any healthier. You should start by adding protein.

Assuming that you are active, a good diet to start with would be 60% complex carbohydrates, 20% mainly poly and monounsaturated fats (about 20g per day of saturated fat is recommended) and 20% lean proteins.

So now I'm trying to replace the fats with carbs... I know carbs have less kcal per gram than fats etc...

I'm really confused about what your goals are. You seem NOT to be trying to lose weight, but you're trying to change your diet to as to take in fewer calories. Why?

Get a copy of Nancy Clark's Sports Nutrition Guidebook and read it carefully.
