Increasing my overall base mileage throughout the winter has helped a lot to improve my endurance and speed. I also focused on one or two speed sessions per week during my build phase and this also seemed to help. I think it depends a lot on how experienced the athlete is...beginners can benefit a lot from increasing their time in the saddle, our on the roads, and in the pool. Veterans may want to focus on speed work and strength training.
