Re: My last run was...how was yours?

Ran my first 10k yesterday morning (Cancer Challenge in Bentonville, AR). Official times haven't been posted yet but I know it was right around 1:10:30, which is within a minute over my adjusted goal time. I originally had set 1:02:00 as my goal but after going out and driving the course, I quickly changed it to 1:10:00. I'm actually very pleased with that time considering there were hills the size of Mt McKinley (ok, not that big but anyway...) it felt like it since I've not had an opportunity to train on any hills here in flat old Carl Junction, MO. I felt like my pace was ok but when I got to around mile 5, I was dying fast. All the big hills were in mile 3 and 4, so I'm sure I did something wrong there that caused me to burn up most of what I had left. I tried to run the same pace I had been running down the hills and make it about halfway up, then walk the rest of the way to the top.

It was also very hot out and while I thought I was plenty well hydrated, I damned near passed out after I crossed the finish line. I did see several women falling out along the way too. It was a great experience and an even better cause....and if it hadn't been for those stinkin hills, I think I'd have been much closer to my original goal. Maybe next time!!!

Old Coyote: Thanks for the tips! No side stitches yesterday so I'm guessing they helped! :)

Ozziemo: Exactly! I ran what I could and called it good...for me, anything is better than nothing!!

My last run was...how was yours?

Wondering about the fueling thing.  I haven't been very consistent.  On my best 9 mile runs I've had oatmeal and toast prior to the run.  That combo, along with a nice cup of coffee seems to do the trick.  I'll try again this week, if I can (I've got a bit of a hip pointer).

Re: My last run was...how was yours?

MkayC: Way to go on your run, everyone has a starting point...as you can see from my times below I started in the high 50's for my 5k time too...just broke into the 30s yesterday!  So keep at it!

RunSlowDan: I too run passed produce on one of my routes I route my run so its near the cool down/walking portion of my cardio.  They have amazing peaches and raspberries!  Any thanks, the rock n sole was a great experience, it was all foggy at the beginning of the race but it quickly evaporated.  It was beautiful!  I recommend it for your list of events next year!  I am going to make it my goal to do the quarter marathon next year, or the half we'll see where I am at in my training!

Jdcarnes: Congrats on the 10k!  and what a great cause!

Now I just have to find an event for July...There is an animal welfare run on the Milwaukee lakefront. Might have to look into that, they put a little flyer on my truck when I was at Rock 'n Sole.  August I am registered for the Dirty Girl Mud Run, really excited for that!

My last run was...how was yours?

Ran a decent 7 mile run this morning. It was a gorgeous, sunny Berkshire Mountain sort of day! (mid 70s at the end of the run) I felt a little worn out by mile 5 or so. Still adjusting to summer running and maybe building back up on miles since my last 10K.

Word of advice for anyone who is lactose intolerant-sensitive..don't try Hammer Recoverite!! OMG, what a mistake that was for me. It made me so sick. I know its supposed to be great stuff, but not for those who don't tolerate dairy.

    jmsab23 Cool! Re: Maine 1/2

AlfNiner How awesome that you and Terranss met and ran together!

Old Coyote Congrats on the new longest mileage! I adore your early morning run reports, the are just magical!

NHLA You are too funny! Nice job on the 5k and the 2nd grand master 50!

    ozziemo Thanks. Now go rest!

    EMTTrix Whoo Hoo! Nice job.

mkayc Warm hugs to your mom and I hope you find some nice runs while visiting.

runslowdan Sounds like a sweet run.

jdcarnes Huge Congrats on your first 10K!! SO proud of you and that's a decent time!

My last run was...how was yours?

Thanks, I was stoked about my time!  Sounds like you had a great morning to run.  Wisconsin has been great this week, lower 60s warming to high 70s.  I seem to get a little stuffy when I run in summer, most likely developing allergies.  I cannot run when it's hot and humid, makes my asthma flair up.  Thanks for the tip on the Hammer Recoverite...I don't care for muscle milk, makes my stomach turn sour.  I actually haven't found any "recovery" supplement that works for me.  I just stick to a banana, some peanuts or string cheese, gatorade and plenty of water lol

My last run was...how was yours?

NHLA - nice race Congrats on the 2nd and surviving cow hill.  At least you kept "moooving" up the hill

EMTTrix - congrats on the PR!!

MaryKay - prayers for your mom.

runslowdan - enjoy the new shoes.  I made a switch from Asics to Brooks myself.

jdcarnes - awesome job on your first 10k!

MelodyLea - good work - I'm glad the heat wasn't a factor.  Sorry about the tummy troubles.  I'm lucky not to have lactose issues - my favorite recovery drink is chocolate  milk.

Ran 6.33 miles this morning still using intervals:  1:1 for the first 1/2 mile; 2:1 for the next mile or so; and then 3:1  or longer (depending on how I felt)  to the end in 1:14:46.  I think those few weeks of no real running affected my cardio endurance but this too shall pass.  Zero calf pain (YAY!) during the run (a tiny bit achey after).  70 degrees and sunny - nice change from last week.

My last run was...how was yours?

Everyone is doing some serious work here! EMTTrix - Grats on the PR. Alfninerx and Terranss - You guys are hill monsters! Runslowdan - Besides getting a new screen name, have you thought of volunteering at races? Most directors will give you an entry to a later race if you work an event. Makes it cheaper to race. MelodyLea - I'm jealous of the weather, and your ability to keep up with everyone on here . Debm - Your cardio fitness will come back very quickly.

No run for me, just a race report. Runnergirl and I volunteered at the Louisville Trail 1/2 and 10k today. Holy smokes (literally!) it was hot. 70f at the start, 85 at the finish line for the winner, 95 for the back-of-the-packers. Smoke from the High Park fire was clearly visible in low spots of the terrain, and the smell was everywhere. We worked a water station/road crossing with her running group at the beginning of the last hill, totally exposed and uphill. It was 85-95 there all morning. The only DNF I'm aware of was a 10 year old girl, a sprint triathlete, but she's just too young physically to take that heat. AND her mother let her run it ALONE! Now, trail runners are very helpful and nurturing people and we take care of each other but she's TEN, lady! She is too young to make the decision to race in those temperatures.

There were still 2 people on the course when we finally left. One of the promoters came out and relieved us. They had not reached the finish line 3-1/2 hours after the start.

To all of you who finished that hot beast today, you ROCK! I did hear that there was an unclear turnaround on the 10K. I can't apologize for something that somebody else did, but I can empathize. Shame on the director for that. I'm glad you all came out and ran today. You're inspiring. You are (as NHLA says) billy goat tough!

    Run free!

My last run was...how was yours?

16 miles 2 hr 18 min. 88 degrees. Ice moca and three botttles hose water. The house on top of Stone Mt. may be the perfect house. The road loops at the top and the yard is shapped like a tear drop. That mean b-tch turned her dogs loose on me. I got rocks. How do dogs know when you got rocks? If they had come 5 yds closer I would have nailed them.

My last run was...how was yours?

The Sunday morning run club moved to 7:15am instead of 8:00 to beat the heat, but it wasn't even hot today. I made it there on time, but started out slow, not really feeling like running. Everyone else in the club was either ahead of or behind me. Then I decided to look around and enjoy the experience and by the time I got to the uphill sections my head was in it. 5 miles - about 30 min. out, less than 27 back. Nice split, even considering the uphills were mostly in the first half. Finished feeling good.

Awesome job, those tackling hills and/or heat!  jdcarnes - your time for your first 10K is about the same as mine (2010), and mine didn't even have hills. Find a flat course, and you may have an easy way to a new PR.

Coyote, I agree with you about the 10-year-old, but not all parents have the same approach.

NHLA - interesting about the dogs. Were they acting vicious? I used to be nervous about dogs, but now I realize most of them are friendly and just wish their owner would run with them.

Debm - glad to hear your pain's going away, hope it keeps improving.

These dogs are vicious and they have been encouraged to keep people off the mountain. I normaly turn around as soon as I here them but today they were locked up. She saw me run by and turned them loose. I knew she would so I picked some rocks up for the trip back.

I cannot believe that someone would not only train their dogs like that, but to turn them loose on you too!  Wow that lady is nuts-o!  Makes me mad that she trained the dogs to be vicious

I will say my lucky girl (petite white shepard) patrols the boarders of our yard well, and she lets you know when your too close.  But all the runners and cyclists know that she is a sweet girl and just letting them know shes queen bee of the yard and my Ramsey (golden retriever) is a big baby and doesn't even make an attempt to harass runners, he barks once and hides

One family owns the top 2/3 of the Mt. and they don't want you up there but its a county road.

DD has an Italian Greyhound. He has an I love you howl that will make you cry. He only says it to three people. DD,  DD best friend and me.

6 miles 53 min. Ran like a turtle.

Even if they own all the land, if the road is marked with a state/county recognized sign they don't own it.  So if its on the county map with a name its free game for anyone who wants to run it!

howlers!  Lucky will howl if the coyotes start, or if she is trying to get your attention

I like that your 6 miles in less than an hour is turtle slow...I can't even do 6 miles yet (but I will get there)!  So either way I'm envious whether thats your rabbit or turtle pace!
