    Well I read the instructions this time on my HRM. I did my 1/4 mile intervals tody and the HRM was right on and believable it topped out at about 150 on my 95 - 110 second 1/4 miles.


    The main thing I dd differently was moisten the electrodes and make sure I had the chest strap on right side up.

    It's crazy this week in Florida. Tropical storm Debbie won't go away. Got a 5 mile run in tonight just before dark. still 80 plus degrees. 40mph wind gust and spotty rain bands. Wasn't able to do anything better than a snails pace of 11:30 average. BUT I DID IT. My long run this weekend is 14 miles. I hope the weather improves SOON.

    Tony has heat and rain in Florida.  We have heat and no rain here in Chicago.  The forecast for today is low to mid-90s, with the possibility of 100 degrees tomorrow.  I did a 25-mile bike ride yesterday, continuing my self-imposed "vacation" from running.  Today and tomorrow will be inside days, probably at the gym one or both days.

    Tony, 14 miles is great! Braving the storm makes it even epic, doesn't it?

    Steve, Cincinnati is supposed to have 106 degrees today and then weather in the upper 90s for the rest of the week.


    Racing Saturday morning is going to be a slog. I'll be at the gym until this heat breaks otherwise. I remember this time last year I was outside because I needed to prove I could. Now, not so much. Nice!


    Trying to decide where to train for my fall HMs and could use advice. There's a large group that run out of a local store. I've done a short training stint with them and found them to be friendly but impersonal, and they have many run/walkers. This would cost money. Office running mentor gave me his group schedule. It's free but small, probably more personal, a longer drive after work and has very few run/walkers. With the free group, I could train myself during the week and use their group runs on the weekends. With the paid group, I'd feel obligated to attend the group runs all the time. IDK. The larger group would probably be better but the women I met running at my speed didn't interest me. Also, I'm a little shy and would like knowing someone in the group. If I started to socialize with the group though, he would know my personal business and I would know his. I can do all the stuff folks think is hard in life but this social stuff scares me silly. Thoughts?

    Hi folks - just found this thread.  It's been going for 2 years!


    I was a couch-potato my whole life.  At age 55, my wife convinced me to try running.  I should kick her a** - it's become an obsession!


    Three years later (May 2012) I ran my first marathon.  Had a great time (I mean I enjoyed myself, my time was just so-so:  5:22).  At 58 years old, I didn't expect a Boston qualifying time anyway, so no complaints.  The Bayshore Marathon (they also have a half and a 10Km race) was great - well-organized, great community support.  Besides, Traverse City is a great town!


    I plan to run a half this fall in Columbus OH.  I would very much like to improve my time a bit (my PR for a half is a few seconds under 2:10), but am really more interested in working on my stamina - I get tired after about 16 to 18 km (sorry, I'm Canadian - that's 10-11 miles). I usually end up walking a lot after that distance.


    It was a long marathon, I'll tell you!


    Are others out there struggling with this too?  What are you doing, specifically for improving endurance/stamina?  I've run a lot of kms (er, miles), but am having a tough time breaking through this.


    Started using my Garmin HRM.  My reading suggests that doing long runs at 75 - 85 % of MHR will improve stamina, but I can't get my heart rate down that low, even running well below my "normal pace".   It feels like I'd have to slow down to a brisk walk to get my heart rate down that far.  I am currently running at an easy pace for 5 or 6 miles at about 90% of my MHR.


    I am hoping that running that fast won't hurt my goal of improving stamina, but if anyone else has had or heard of a similar issue, please pass it on.



    Mary, if the cost to sign up with that running store isn't crazy, I'd go for it.  I've made a pile of life-long friends running in a group like that, and learned a lot of valuable lessons from more experienced runners.  I'm sure my running wouldn't be where it is today if it weren't for my association with a local store.  We do bus trips to our races and have become like a big family.


    Our times are all over the place - we have Boston qualifiers and slowpokes (like me) and a bunch in between.  Ages from mid-20s to late 50's (again, me!)  I've never found it elitest or felt the more accomplished runners look down on me or anything:  just lots of support, encouragment, and good advice.


    Sure, it took a while to get to know people, but it was worth it.   Funny the things we can accomplish, and the things we struggle with, isn't it?

    Rob Welcome to a great thread. you'll find a great group of people here. most like you started running later in life. In regards to getting your HR down and Improving your stamina. I suggest on your next scheduled long run try a 3/1 run walk ratio. sounds crazy but I think it will work for you. judging by your Marathon and Half Marathon races this should be around your training pace. You'll find scheduled walk breaks will keep your heart rate in check. if in the beginning if this doesn't work for you And your HR stays over training pace . Switch Tia 2/1. Time on your feet with help increase your endurance. Speed comes afterwards. Looking forward to reading your post on howit worked.

    Rob - Welcome! Thank you! Your advice hit the spot. With either group I choose, I'll need to remember it because going alone is easier for me than pushing through the discomfort, particularly since I run for pleasure. I built my endurance exactly as Tony has described. It was almost easy. Your high HRM readings, if they are reliable, are telling you something.

    Hello Everyone!

    I am new to the sport of running. At 52 I ran the first race of my life April 2, 2011. Crossed the finish line with tears in my eyes! Since then I have run two half marathons and many local 5,10 and 15K races. I'm hooked!

    You see, I did not know there was an athlete inside me dying to get out. I weighed 180 and I am 5'10". I joined December 2010 and that's where my journey began... I started walking and lifting weights... walking turned in to running and I have not looked back. Today I weigh 134 and in the best shape of my life!!! I am currently in training for my first marathon 26.2 Rock'n'Roll Denver on my birthday 9-22. Training is going great and I am on target.... excited to reach this milestone on my 54 birthday.


    my answers to the questions above.....


    1. I am always working on my time and distance.


    2. I run 3 races a month. These races give me something to work towards, not to mention making new friends & enjoying the great after parties


    3. I started on a treadmill back in 2010 run/walk. When I took it outside I hated it... running on the ground was so hard. Then as I got stronger, and began to bloom outdoors, I disliked the treadmill. Now I run outside every chance I get unless the weather or time of day keeps me indoors. The longest I will run on treadmill is 4 miles.I do use it for interval training/speed work on occasion.


    4. Happy to say injury free!


    5. Challenges - If I don't run first thing in the morning, I have found it won't happen. Life gets in the way. So I run in the morning - early.


    one additional note.... at first I began running with headphones because I noticed everyone else did and I thought that's what I should do, run with music. I have since learned that I run better with out music. I enjoy the rhythm of my feet hitting the ground, my breathing - I make my own happy tunes. My business has benefited from this too as I make plans and good business decisions while I run. I am also in tune to the nature around me... love the beauty and sounds of the outdoors and take it all in. Prefer this over running with headphones/music.  Life is GOOD!

    Rob and Kim Welcome to the thread. You both sound like you have had great starts to your running careers.


    Kim your path to running is almost identical to mine. I lost a great deal of weight (50 lbs+) and progressed from walking to running and treadmill to road. I started at 47 and at 51 I am still at it. Unfortunately I have had my share of injuries but I keep working through them. Good luck in your training.


    Rob congrats on running that marathon!!! i don't have any advice for you on the stamina issue but I'm sure someone will.


    MaryKay - I agree with Rob about the running Club/Group being a wonderful thing.  I joined our local club two years ago and I am very glad I did.  The support has been wonderful. I think runners as a whole are generally very nice people.  I pay $20 per year to be part of my club. They have 3 or 4 group runs /week and all is very informal. There is no paid staff in the club so everything is a volunteer effort. I try to do one group run per week because it keeps me on task.  Like Rob said sometimes it takes awhile to get connected with people but in the end you may come out with a few new friends.

    Rob and Kim-welcome to the oldster group.  But we still are moving.


    My story is similar as well, started 2/2011 from zero, now running 3 times weekly and racing monthly.  Kim-I will turn 59 on 9/22 and had hoped to run my first HM then, but a conference is getting in the way.  So I'm postponing it for a month.  Now a full marathon, that I don't know about.  Congrats on finishing that!


    I know my HR is higher than the ideal training level when I run, and not sure what to do about it either.  I've also found that my resting heart rate has not dropped very much since I started running, which I find interesting.  Anyone out there know why.


    At any rate, welcome and enjoy the support you get here-it is a great group.

    I had frustrating time trying to post last night.  whenevery I clicked "add reply", it told me that "restricted content found"!  I read and re-read the post, as did my reading specialist wife, and couldn't find anything that could be construed as offensive or in need of restriction!  Has anyone else every had this happen?

    Hello Runners!!!


    Long time since I have been in to post to the 50 and beyond, but I do read your post regularly so I have been keeping up with all the wonderful things you all are doing! It just seems that I never get time to post myself.


    It seems that almost everyone is dealing with the heat! Here in the deep south we are having triple digit temps and high humidity which makes running very sticky and slow even at the butt crack of dawn when I run! LOL  All I can say is hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!!!


    Welcome Kim and Rob! This is a wonderful and supportive group of runners! It sounds as if you both will fit in well! Congratulations on your Marathon Rob!


    For those you of you discussing high HR. For what it is worth this is the info that I have received from both my Dr. and from one of my runner friends that is a personal trainer/runner/triatheloner (sp?) and is in his 70's! When you use the typical forumula to caluclate your Max HR (220 minus your age) as you get older your MHR goes down. This is based on people that are not active. Runners and people that are physically fit, our MHR is actually higher than what is shown when using the formula. I can run at about 90% of what my MHR should be for my age and still carry on a conversation or sing! I know that I am reaching my MHR when I get to the point that I cannot talk except for a word every now and then and when I get winded. My Dr. says that the only way to know your true MHR is to have a stress test. I wear a HRM when I run and even though my MHR is 161 I sometimes get up to 170 or so with no problems breathing when I am doing sprints or intervals. I usually run at about a 145 MHR with easy conversation.  Everyone is different and the longer you run the more you become attuned to your body, your breathing your HR. I can usually tell with in a few beats what my HR is by how I feel. I recommend that everyone talk to their Dr. about your MHR.

    Mary Kay! I ran alone for the first year that I ran and I really loved it. Then I joined a running club and even though I liked the people and they were all very supportive, I really never connected with the runners that were running at the time of day that I ran. They were all much faster than me and I was a bit intimidated by them. But, I did meet a girl whose husband was in the club and we became running partners! We trained together for her HM and my Marathon last year and we run together 3 times a week year round. She is 37 years old and I am 59 and we have become great friends! She is like a daughter to me. Our problem now is that she for some reason has become a slower runner and I have become a faster runner and it is hard for us to run together because she becomes discouraged because she cannot keep up and my running is suffering because I slow dow and wait on her and am not running to my potential. There are several runners in my spin class that I go to and we are all training for the same HM in November. We have formed our own running group for this training and I will be doing my LSR with them on Sunday mornings! We have several different paces so everyone will have a place. My friend that I have been running with I will still run with on my easy run days and I will do my pre LSR with her on Saturday. The best of both worlds!!

    I have lots of HM's this fall with the first one being in Sept! It will still be hotter than hades in Mississippi in Sept! What was I thinking??? I am really enjoying my running again! I am back to normal, injury free and just enjoying life!


    Oh, for those that are new to our group I started running about 2.5 years ago with C25K at the age of 57. I will be 60 in December and in the best shape of my life! I have run 5 HM's, 1 FM, many 5K's and 10K's and I am getting into trail running! I also take spin class 2 x week, weight train 2xweek and take a Pilates and K'Boxing class 2 x week. Most days I run or spin in the morning an then have classes at the gym after work! I also play golf on the weekends! I never have any stagnate time! LOL

    Yeah, this whole HR thing has got me stumped.  Every article I read on it is different - even the Karvonen formula seems to vary depending on who's writing about it.


    My personal trainer used it to determine my MHR and said it should be about 172.  But I can go out and run 5 miles (using that MHR) at 90% MHR and barely break a sweat (except in this heat, of course).  Tied to re-calculate it myself, using a calculator on a website somewhere and it came to 162.  If that's the case, I am running comfortably at about 95% MHR.  I doubt that...


    A couple of folks here (Tony and Mary) have suggested I slow down even further (a fast walk, I estimate) or do walk/run intervals to keep myself in a target HR zone between 75 and 85% of MHR.  Never even considered that slowing down even more would improve my endurance - seems counter-intuitive to me!


    Anyway, it doesn't take much to confuse me.


    We don't have a lot of ways to measure progress in this sport - just distance and time.  Your first HM or FM - they are an accomplishment that stands alone - time isn't even a factor.  However, when you run the next one, and the one after that, the distance doesn't change so you look more and more at the time.  It's a natural measure of progress in the sport, I guess.


    I should be more like my wife - she just likes to run.  Races don't even interest her:  she just wants to get out in the fresh air and have a workout, visit with her running friends, get off the couch.  I am always looking at my time, perceived exertion, some way to measure my progressing level of fitness and so on...

    Heart rate training - a subject fraught with uncertainty and misinformation.  A few things I know.


    1. It's meaningless without knowing an accurate MHR. 


    2. The fomulas, at best, work for about 50% of the population.  "220 minus age" was derived from a collection of data (several apparently unrelated studies) and was never meant to be applied to the general population.  I've talked to other runners at races whose MHR is over 220 (mine at age 58 was at least 188, I haven't checked it for a few years).  Also, in active runners, MHR tends NOT to go down with age.


    3. The best way to find MHR is by being tested at a human performance lab. The typical medical lab stress test is not intended to determine MHR.  There are online articles that give several ways to approximate MHR. Here's one:


    4. Once you have your MHR, you can determine zones, by Karvonen formula (for which you need RHR) or straight percent of MHR.


    5. There's a whole school of thought around running in lower zones to improve endurance (and ultimately performance). A big proponent is Phil Maffetone:  He uses a very different maximum.


    6. Remember that when you run, your heart rate will vary depending on a number of things beside your perceived effort.  Things like weather (heat), overall health, hydration, sleep, etc.

    Lenzlaw Thanks for Phils link, lots of good reading there. Once I slowed down my training speed and built my endurance my speed on race day increased as my results show race after race. Hope this holds true for my first full Marathon in Chicago in Oct. I'm doing my long runs 60-90 seconds slower than Marathon pace. However I'm also doing one run a week at projected Marathon pace.just want to finish healthy and enjoy the journey.

    To hot to run outside tonight in FL. Had to settle for 5 quick miles on the old dread mill.
