Ball hits runner (not what you think)

Softball (not that it matters) - batter hits line drive over left fielder's head, ball rolls to the fence.
As the runner approches second and sees the throw coming in to the shortstop she slows down and "trips" over second base.
She's laying on the ground with her foot about 6" off the bag.
Throw goes over the shortstop's head and hits the runner in her hand and the ball stops right next to her in the dirt.
The second baseman is standing on the base but does nothing.
The runner "scoots back" to get her foot on the bag.
The shortstop comes in, picks the ball up and throws it back to the pitcher.
At that point the BU calls the runner out because the ball hit her while she was off the base.
The manager asks for time and goes out and asks the BU if he would confer with the PU about the call.
The two Umps get together and decide the call stands, the runner is out for being hit with the ball while off the base.
No Protest.
The umpire would have to rule that the runner INTENTIONALLY hit the throw with her hand in order to disrupt the play.
I don't think the runner was called out "for being hit with the ball while off the base." I think the runner was called out for INT.
If not, then YGTBSM!

This was a neighboring District and I just happened to be in the area so I dropped by.
I was standing next to the TD, an aquaintence of mine, who was standing right behind the backstop.
When the BU asked for a conference the home plate ump called the base ump over to him to discuss the call.
They were about 5 feet from us (they didn't ask the TD for his opinion) and we could easily hear what they were saying.
The BU said "I called the runner out because she was off the base and the ball hit her."
The PU then said "I agree" and the BU then announced "the call stands, the runner is out for being hit by the ball while off the base."
I turned to the TD and said are you ready for the Protest?
But, No Protest was lodged so the call stood.
The TD did tell me he would talk to the Umpires after the game (I left to go to watch another game but I assume he talked to them).

That would not have been appropriate. When umpires get together to discuss a call on the field, they should not involve the TD. The TD only gets involved when the offended manager protests the final ruling from the responsible umpire following the conference.
If I were the TD and the umpires asked me to participate in their discussion, I would respectfully decline.
Manny - I totally agree, but I have seen Umpires call a TD over "for a conference" and I have seen TDs participate in those conferences.
If with you, if I'm the TD and get called over by an Umpire for "my opinion" I'm telling him/her - you guys make your call and if one of the managers doesn't like it an Protests then I'll give my ruling.
BTW, as a TD, I've never been called over by an Umpire untill there was a Protest.
I think someone already said "wow"...so I will just say "supercalifragilisticunbelievable"
:-)
So, given that call, any throw from F3 to F6 or F5 in an attempt to nail R1's run to 2nd base; and hits R1 in the back enroute to 2nd base, would be an out. aaargh!! ![]()
Reminds me back in the cave-man era of baseball, outs were recorded by way of throwing at, and hitting baserunners with the ball. ![]()

Reminds me back in the cave-man era of baseball,
Are you saying that you were there Frank! I know you go back a ways but jeez....
We used to call this "indian rubber". I don't know why. Apologies to our native americans, I'm sure. But indian rubber? Only in whiffle ball and kick ball though, not baseball.
Where are these umps not working now?
Time wounds all heels.....
This call is so thin you could blindfold it with dental floss!!
I honestly get embarrassed when umpires make idiotic calls like this one.
What was the score of the game at this point?
Better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it! ![]()
No BB, wasn't at the game sites, but was retired acting as a rules consultant----questions came to me and replied via drumbeats; some games held up for hours/days with sabre-tooth tigers on the prowl---and disgruntled fans beating up on umps and other fans with clubs.
Some real disorderly fans were fed to the tigers---as were incompetant umpires; however, the tigers "spit-up" most all the umpires.
BTW---players called out by being hit with the ball, were the lucky ones.
If a thrown ball missed its mark, a rock was the next missile thrown. ![]()
