I stretch after, sometimes before depending on how my muscles feel. I would encourage you just starting out to to both. Will avoid injury that way or greatly reduce your chances of injury.
When starting out your body and muscles will tend to tighten up because they are not used to the exercise. Everyone's take on this is different and you will read "expert" opinions on both options. Do what works for you and your body. When I first started I did not like to stretch. and I hurt myself pretty good. so I began stretching before and definitely after the runs. Helped me greatly continue the journey. Now that I jump out and run 3 or 4 miles on a whim, I do stretch some afterwords and sometimes a mild stretch before It all depends on how the muscles feel. Sometimes I stretch during a run if I think I'm tightening up.
You'll learn more about your body as you go forward on this journey.. The key is "GO FORWARD" and don't stop moving. I repeated week 2, 5 and 6. Week 2 because of injury. (lack of stretching)
You can do this. You've read the previous posts. All these folks on here have an amazing testimony of where they have come from and the struggles that they have overcome. I started at 270. Never a runner, NEVER. now... I love to run. I have been experiencing some knee pain but have found out what the problem is. I need to post the link to a video I saw that explained what I was doing wrong. It's about how you move your hips and if you sway back and forth or if you keep your hips level when you run. There is sooooo much to running correctly to stay injury free and pain free. Lots of research to be done.
What ever you do.. Don't quit. Rest in between training days or walk. Just don't give up.
