I'm trying to accomplish two goals with my swimming. I'm shooting for over 100 miles swam total for the year but also train adequetly for olympic tri's. My question is, I'm swimming anywhere from 3000-4000 yards per workout, usually twice a week, sometimes three. From the tri perspective, is that too much or as long as I'm keeping good form and trying to improve the pace, is that sort of distance ok?
Generally, the more you swim, the better you'll get, but how you swim is more important. You should be doing a variety of intervals, paced workouts, and drills. Extra swim mileage won't add too much wear and tear on your body (as long as your form is good). One of my athletes is only in the pool for 2500 yds, once a week, training for olympic distance races and she has no substantial swim background to speak of. Another one of my athletes is in the pool 5x a week, for about 2500-3000 yds with a masters group and he learned to swim in high school. Everyone is different and everyone has different goals. So ultimately, if you are seeing the results you want then keep doing what you are doing.
I train for Ironman, and generally do 2-3 1.5-2K workouts per week (20-35 minutes) and then one longer-ish (3500-4000) swim on the weekends. That works well for me.

You sound like me: fewer swims but more yards to get the time in. If you are looking to maximize distance for your goal, then this works. Personally, I have found that I get more improvement out of frequent shorter swims, but that's not always practical...good luck!
