Chocolate Milk?

I keep seeing this ad with Mirinda Carfrae, where she claims she drinks chocolate milk to recover from her runs. While I know she is being paid for her love of chocolate milk, I was wonder if the moo juice really does make a good post run/post workout drink.

Well, I guess it would be a quick and economical form of getting simple carbs after an intense workout. Milk does have Vitamin D, calcium, potassium, magnesium and protein that assists with replenishing muscles, so it may be a great recovery option for some.
There are some new studies suggesting that chocolate milk may be an alternative nutrient replacement with some greater benefits over popular sports drinks. (Of course, the dairy industry has funded some of the research, but certainly some of the positive outcomes would be expected anyway). It may also be a popular trend to those that prefer whole foods as opposed to supplements, but the low-fat options would be better. It is always important to look at the calorie and sugar content.
Milk (not necessarily chocolate) makes a good recovery drink after long runs because it already has the recommended 4-to-1 ratio of carbs to protein. I personally drink skim.

I have added skim chocolate milk to my routine as post workout as well - same reason as the prior 2 postings, because "studies suggest". Good to know it supports the 4-1 ratio, which I didn't know, so thanks to Len. Also, I'm assuming it is cheaper than the Accelerade which I've now replaced. As with all these things, I follow the study - I don't really notice any difference, since I'm not using myself as a controlled study. Who could possibly be in a position to say it works in the affirmative with confidence? I wouldn't believe anyone if they said it made a difference for them. Doesn't mean I'm going to stop using it.
I'm a graduate student so I always look for what the research says. Heres a link about an exercise physiologist at Indiana University who did research on chocolate milk for a post workout supplement.
Here's a excerpt: "Stager took chocolate milk into the controlled setting of his IU laboratory and tested its effect on cyclists. It performed as well as Gatorade and almost twice as well as another sports recovery drink, Endurox."

I have to take back what I said about white milk. Making it chocolate adds a lot of carbs, to get to the 4-to-1 ratio. White milk is more like 2-to-1.

I need to be clear that I was just stating that there are some benefits of milk, overall, that represent common sense considerations. It was not my intention to recommend nor discourage the use of chocolate milk as a potential recovery option for runners. I do not have direct experience, so I was just sharing some considerations.
Chocolate Milk is just about the perfect recovery drink! 4 to 1
Thanks for all the cool info. I find this subject very interesting. I feel like I don't really have any post run/workout recovery process. I generally just drink a Powerade Zero or water. Maybe that is why I feel so drained some days and it takes me days before I feel like I am fully recovered. I focus on hydrating myself before I run, but have never done any post run ritual. I guess I cam give some low fat chocolate milk a try.

Is there an optimal amount of calories based on the 4/1 ratio to drink for best recovery? In other words, should one drink a cup, a quart or what? I'm sure it would be based on one's wt. Tks for your input!

Yeah, I was wondering about that too. I think the general "rule of thumb" is 1 quart of liquid for every 30 mins of running. But Im not sure how that equates to chocolate milk.

These are ruff nr's .5 grams of carbs per lb, for a 150 lbs approx 75 grams and 10-20 grams of protein. The protein nr's are about the same for most wt's. Try to get this in within 30 mins of exercise. For me only hard days and long runs! My wife get these little 12 oz chocolate milks at Food lyon that works great and are cheap.

Dietitian Jackie Dikos offers this rough formula: Divide your weight by two, and eat that many grams of carbohydrates, plus 10 to 20 grams of protein after a hard workout.
USING THE 4:1 RATIO:
WEIGHT DIVIDED BY 2 = CARBS DIVIDED BY 4 = PROTEIN
125 pounds 63 grams carbohydrates 15 grams protein
170 pounds 85 grams carbohydrates 21 grams protein
(1 cup of chocolate milk has 8 grams of protein and about 30 grams of carbs.)
