Dunno if it's global warming or not, but races have been wicked hot this year. How have you adjusted your strategy to still have a successful race despite the conditions!!?!?

I keep a frozen water bottle in transition. If I get off the bike and am feeling too hot I'll carry water with me on the run. Nothing is worse than being parched and knowing you've got a mile or two before you'll be able to get a drink. Most of the time I don't need it, but I like having it just in case.
Hey Pat,I try and replicate hot conditions in my training,I live in SW FL so when I head out for a bike/run at 3:30 it's usually 90 something and humid.I raced this past weekend in Englewood it was a delightfull 82 degrees!!I prefer Gatorade on the bike too I'll need those electrolites on the run, best of luck,Mike

That's a great call...i also use that last bike / first run aid station to get super wet with water to keep my core body temp down...and try to keep those shoes dry!!!

as long as those longer midday sessions don't blow you up for future workouts, you should be totally ready for the heat!! I am kinda jealous!! ![]()
What do you use for sunscreen???

Hey Pat,I try to stay away from sunscreen when running/biking it blocks the pores but I work outside everyday and apply it a couple times a day.

I agree with mjm. I don't use much sunblock since I have to get up so early to avoid the heat. I might put some on for races if I'm at high altitude or think I'll be out during the mid-day sun. Same for training. I'm curious what other's thoughts are on sunblock.
Interesting...I know that sunblock can block the pores, but I dont' think I can ever look back on a workout and say that my sunblock was the reason why my performance was sub-optimal. Thanks for sharing!!!

I agree that training to fit expected race conditions is best (if uncomfortable). I live, train, and race at altitude (7,000 ft) so sunscreen/sunblock is important year-round. Not to be a salesperson, but I have used Rocky Mountain Sunscreen for years. As to blocking pores, here's what they have to say:
