Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of August 5th
Fit45 - Wow - HR of 126 on your run?!
I can't wait till I'm done with my current training / races so I can focus on training to get my HR down.
Sorry you weren't feeling so great...

What works for me (with gels, not queasiness):
I am using Accel gel which has a small amount of protein in it. I was using Powerbar gel (the one with the caffeine) which also worked for me, but I really think that bit of protein gives me just a little extra oomph to keep going.
I just read another thread on the subject a little while ago, and someone said something to the effect of if it helps because you think it does then that's all that matters.
And I totally agree!

corrina - Yay! Enjoy that run tonight!

spicegeek - I don't see her race on the calendar...

halfbyaug... if your HM is this weekend... GOOD LUCK! And tell us when it is so we can cheer for you from afar and we'll know when to expect your report!

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of August 5th
got in 3 on the treadmill this afternoon. it was the worst run i've had in a long time. i never could get into it and after 2 miles, i was feeling beat, so i took a short walk break and then did another mile. its odd because i rarely have to walk, but whatever. at least i got the 3 in and tomorrow will be a very welcome rest day.

hope everyone else's runs were better than mine today.

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of August 5th
Hi everyone, just a quick check in before I have to take my DD to practice. Did alittle muscle work, this morning. Just feeling down and out. I think this heat is about to get me. Gonna take a rest day tomorrow.

Sounds like everyone is doing great. I wish it would rain here, I'd love to run in the rain, I miss being outside and its only been a week. I think I'm going thru withdrawals.

My training group meets at 6 pm thru the week and 7 am on Sat.

Talk to everyone later.

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of August 5th
WOW, you fail to post for a day and it takes an hour of reading just to catch up.

Ran 4 miles yesterday mostly in a light rain. It was still muggy and uncomfortably hot however.

Ever have one of those runs that you would like to pack up in a box and put a pretty bow on and then just when you need it be able to pull it out of the box? Well, that was how my run was yesterday. 4 miles seemed shorter than usual, my time though slow was better than usual, my shoes felt great, just the right tunes were playing on my pod (same ones I always hear) and life is grand.

Todays run was a little different from yesterday. It started with an argument. The schedule said 5 miles. My legs said three miles. We compromised. Did 4 miles along the same route but it seemed harder and longer. Still ended with a time that pleased me.

Hey, maybe all the time on the treadmill these last couple of hot weeks has helped??? Who knows???

Good runs to all...less than 8 weeks left here.

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of August 5th
Hey all,

Went out at dinner( after I made dinner for the family) and ran 3.2. Schedule said 7 but as time was short I did my short run today and I'll do the 7 in the morning. Ran a little faster than was supposed to but it felt good so I kept at it.

Have a good evening all,

Corrina

Good Morning.

Well, you will be happy to know that I turned off my light at 10:20 last night, and was probably fast asleep by 10:22. I got up this morning and did a solid 6 miles, Tomorrow is the newly instituted "extra" rest day, which I'm excited about. My alarm won't go off... imagine.

creative: Love your story about running in the rain. I've always been one of the "crazy" ones (even if not in regards to running), so I'm happy to have you on the team.

It's FRIDAY!! Whew Hew...happy dance!

I ran 5 this morning. I finally picked up the pace a bit. It was a cool 79 degrees when I headed out the door at 5:30am. It is supposed to be 102 on Sunday so I believe I will be heading out the door very early to get in my 9 miles. Have I ever said that I hate Kansas summers??

QOD: What site do you use to downloads songs onto a MP3 player? I have had the same songs for months that I burned from CDs and I need a change.

Hey Joescool, you've really got something started here, 98 posts, WOW!
Yes I am keeping a log, but there is a lot of white space. My son is doing well, ran 26kms last night, going through the half in 1:47- must be nice to be young!

Fit45, I like Sharkies, which are like gummybears and disolve in your mouth as you run without affecting breathing, or Nature's Path protein bars, which have lots of carbs and protein, and are tasty. Either way you will need some water to help absorb the carbs (not sure if that's very scientific but you will get thirsty.)
Simon.

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of August 5th
Good morning halfers,

Wbertha - loved your description of your good run! Seems like more often than not after a good run like that the next one is hard. Running is very humbling like that.

Creative1 - yes, running in the rain can be really fun. I've only gotten to do it a couple of times, but it was great! Something about really FEELING the weather is invigorating.

Corrina -- do you remember those "I can bring home the bacon and fry it up in a pan...." commercials? That's what you reminded me of with fixing dinner for your family and heading out for that run.

Francesca and Shelia -- happy rest days. Sounds like it's time, and that's what they are for!

imogene -- good power sleeping! I'm big on getting enough rest. My hubby thinks I'm nuts because I always want to go to bed before the news comes on.

fit45 -- your ice cream story made me think...what if there was a half marathon, where every few miles, you had to eat some ice cream in order to continue. There could be a different flavor at each stop. Maybe Ben and Jerry's could sponsor it! Noone would have to worry about carrying gels or beans or anything else.

Joe -- nice run in the heat! I really don't know how you do it. Do you think it's better to go later when it's hotter like you did since the humidity is lower, or better to go early in the morning (cooler w/ more humidity)?

Ran in circles like a hamster at the rec center's indoor track last night. It's 1/8 of a mile but I refuse to count laps or try to remember to punch the garmin each time. Run on the schedule was a tempo run for time anyway, so I went by my heart rate to make sure I was running at a good effort level. Kept the HR mostly in the 170's and pushed it up into the lower 180's for the last 10 minutes. OK, so I decided to pass a guy that was running close to my pace, and then couldn't let up on the pace and lose face after that. That is the immature runners way to run negative splits I'm usually the passee, not the passer so I don't know how to handle it! Oh, and I have the heart rate of a hummingbird, not a runner. In order to do low heart rate training, I'm pretty sure I'd have to move backwards.

Have a great weekend, and halfbyaug, good luck in your race!

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of August 5th
Hello guys. It has been a while since I posted. How is everyone? I'm doing well. Been doing my sheduled runs. Feeling great. Going to do the 5 mile group run tomorrow.

Questions: since I am new at all this.

1) Why do you keep logs? How does it benefit?

2) Hill training. Since I am in Houston, we do not have hills so the training schedule I have said that if you do not have hills to use a treadmill at 30%. What does this mean? 30% - I am confused. I did it last night and put the incline at 2. Not sure if that was right. Later in the schedule we run a large bridge.

3) Do you think I should invest in one of those HM things? Do you have one?

Sorry about all the questions. If you want you can email the answers so everyone is not bogged down. Thank you!!

Peggy

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of August 5th
Hi all,
Had a rest day today. I have a 5K tomorrow. My calf is still bothering me from last Sunday's race. I've run almost 22 miles on it since. I can feel it but it's not horrible pain. We will see how it holds up to speed tomorrow. I will "let up" if it's too much for it as I've got more important races to run coming up soon.

As for a running log... I find it invaluable. I can see where I have been physically as well as mentally. I can see how I ran certain races in the past. I can see how weather affected my runs as well as injuries. I can track my shoe mileage. Plus, it's like a diary... it brings back fond (and not so fond) memories.

When you refer to a HM I'm assuming you mean a heart rate monitor (HRM). I used one at one time (briefly) but don't anymore. I can judge how I'm running by my breathing. I may start playing with the thing again as the weather cools off. The chest strap can be hot and confining in the heat and humidity.

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of August 5th
Peggy, I do use a HRM for my running, and I consider it an essential part of my gear at the moment.

I was running 3 miles, 3x per week "all out", trying in vain to improve either my time, distance, or frequency of running. I was always too sore and too exhausted to add any more days to the mix. I cut a few seconds off the time and I found that I could push one of the runs to 4-5 miles, but I wanted MORE, BETTER.

So I started reading about Low Heart Rate training -- you can read all about it on the 'Basic Training' Forum on the Maffetone thread -- and that method seemed like it was made for me.

The idea is that you spend a period of several months 'basebuilding' -- running much slower than before, at lower heart rates. You build up your aerobic fitness without tearing up your body, and your heart 'learns' to carry you along with less effort. Over time, you are able to run increasingly fast(er) and significantly longer with much less effort. As you approach a race, you begin to add speedwork to your plan -- toning up the anaerobic system as well, so that when you put on the 'all out' effort, you have lots more going for you.

I'm not at the speedwork stage yet (really looking forward to August 27 when I do get there), but I can tell you that I am now able to run 6 days per week, 30-33 miles per week with no soreness or strain. My average heart rate during a run is now less than 129 -- it used to be closer to 170, and I wasn't a whole lot faster when my heart was working that much harder than I am right now.

The HRM alarm beeps slowly when I'm not exerting enough effort, so I know to speed up. It beeps really fast and annoyingly when I'm going too fast, so I know to slow down. I could make progress without it, but it's awfully easy to lie to myself while I'm out there -- and do too much and get injured. The HRM keeps me honest.

Anyway, Phil Maffetone (the guy who popularized the low heart rate training thing) insists that the "no pain, no gain" exercise mentality we've all been buying into forever is just wrong -- he says that it's truly possible to reap great rewards without pain or risk of injury.

Way more than you wanted to know, I'm sure!
