Re: Run For Your Life - week 3 (Aug 5 - 11)
I'm finished with W3D3. Last night was rough. My left knee has been hurting since W1D3 and I've ignored it thinking it was just my muscles needing to catch up. Well last night my leg was telling me it needed to be tended to. I RICE'd it and this morning it feels pretty good. I'm going to let it rest today and tomorrow and see how it feels on Friday. I am just hoping I don't need to see a doctor.

Rachel - isn't that the truth. I came to the same realization yesterday while finishing W3D3, I just ran 3 minutes without dying and just a few weeks ago 60 seconds was almost unbearable. BRAVO to all of us!

W3D1 is done. This has been the first run that I've had a shin problem, but my left one was not happy during the walking segments. Overall, a decent run though.

Kandace: General rule of thumb is to keep going if its sore, take a break or take it VERY easy if there's any pain. Definitely rest if its pain; you don't want to add to an injury and an extra rest day could make all the difference.

Re: Run For Your Life - week 3 (Aug 5 - 11)
I didn't get to post yesterday. but I completed D2W3. I got up early to do it too! It went pretty well. I read through all the other threads (as someone suggested) and saw where someone had mentioned heel striking as a cause of shin pain/ splints. I think that is what I was doing. When I was running, I would watch my feet and legs (weird?) and I realized that I was positioning my foot weird and that was causing me to heel strike, and well I did NOT watch my feet this run and the shin pain was still there, but alot better. So I will see how it goes. I think tomorrow is gonna be D3W3. I don't know if I am ready for week 4. If things go as planned I will start that on Sunday.

My plan before returning to work was get up and run before work, but I have come to the realization that the sun does not come up until about 6:30. That's not enough time to get a run in before going to work. I hate waiting until night because it is so gosh darn hot here and I will have to wait until about 8:00 when the sun is starting to set, plus it will still be 80 degrees, and then you can still feel the heat radiating off the pavement, not to mention by that time I am usually wiped out. sigh What am I gonna do?

Well tonight's workout is tae-bo boot camp or maybe some Denise Austin stability ball workouts...or maybe if i get real energetic...both! But I doubt it. I really like Denise Austin's workouts but she gets on my last nerve. I have to turn the TV down just to work out! She is just too peppy for me!

Well thanks to everybody who welcomed me. I'll post more later!

Re: Run For Your Life - week 3 (Aug 5 - 11)
I just did W2D3!! It went well. The running intervals did not seem as hard as they have been. I'm still scared of running 3 min. at a time Friday but I think I can do it. Those two skinny girls were in there again today and I didn't even care today. The runner girl felt better today and she ran over 3 miles in 30 min. Pretty inspiring actually. I was impressed. Tomorrow I'm going to go on the eliptical machine for 30 min. Friday I'm going to do W3D1. Also I noticed my calves look firmer and I think my face looks a little thinner! No one else has said anything yet but I can't wait till they notice too!

Stacy: I live near Ann Arbor, MI. Cedar Point is about a 2 1/2 hour drive for us.

I'm making my Sparkspeople page tonight. My username on there is JennyV2007. Real original, I know! So whoever else has one add me to your friends!

To the ladies who are having weird periods...

Marathon runners ( and other types of pro athletes) do not have periods. It is due to the amount they exercise. I forgot the scientific reason. I would think it would be a little soon to be happening to us, but since you are doing something different it is entirely possible that the cause is the running.

Re: Run For Your Life - week 3 (Aug 5 - 11)
Okay, okay, I give up! In race terms, I am definitely going to stay way in the back of this estrogen-laced group and stay out of your way!

Are there really no other men out there? Not that I mind being surrounded by a group of great women, thank you very much.

Hey NewMama, you just tell those little cuties to eat your dust. I think that sort of fear or intimidation is one of the main reasons we quit. Don't you let that happen to you. Remember, you are doing this for yourself, and what anybody else thinks is the most unimportant thing in the world.

As for me, I'm old, fat, and slow, but by golly in the last two weeks I've run 8 miles more than any of my other old, fat, slow friends and co-workers. This attitude is new for me (I've always been a people-pleaser), but I have to admit I kind of like it!

And Rach, eat the pizza. You deserve it, and you would have eaten it before without thinking about it. You kept it small, enjoyed it, and then ran. Again, many people would use eating a piece of pizza as an excuse to quit. Just keep on. The whole point of this new attitude is to be good to yourself, and a piece of pizza or two won't hurt you if you don't let it.

Okay, I'm off my soapbox now. But I'm pretty emotional about this running stuff now. I really think I have finally found the right thing for me. I hope it is the right thing for all of you too. Keep it up!

Aaron

P.S. Just for the record, since I started running, I haven't had a single period, light or otherwise.

Aaron - LOL! I'm glad that running has not affected your monthly cycle!
Ok, I had to get caught up on all of you tonight - I've had a crazy couple of days and haven't been on the site since yesterday morning! You all sound like you are doing GREAT! Way to go!

Anyway, I finished W3D2 tonight. My mom is visiting with my niece (12) and nephew (9) this week, so I recruited the munchkins to run with me tonight. My niece made it through the warm-up and first 90 second run and then bailed...my nephew made it strong through the warm-up, and first 3 runs (including the first 3 minute run) but then he bailed too....both of them joined me for the cool down...and I was really proud of them for trying! But, I think this showed them that they need to exercise a little more than they do now (which is not at all) if their old aunt can run longer than they can! They both want to run with me on Friday again, so I'm excited that they had fun!

Rachel - I WILL email you definitely to discuss my consulting biz idea....I've worked in corporate, assoc. and start-ups for the last 15 years and now want to start working for myself...would LOVE LOVE LOVE to chat! (now I just have to figure out how to PM you offline!

NewMama - way to kick butt in front of the skinny chickees! You rock!

And, HELLO! I LOVE Cedar Point! It's the BEST amusement park ever!!! I l live WAY to far away to go now, but we used to go every summer from Pittsburgh when I was growing up!

Have a great night all!

Re: Run For Your Life - week 3 (Aug 5 - 11)
Hey guys- actually mostly gals. I have been leaving my computer at work so I haven't been on the site in a few days, but I have been running.

I finished w3d2 today and I am so happy to say that my knees are feeling so much better- not 100% but better. I was getting scared I would have to quit. I am having a mental problem with the 1st 3 min run. It just happens to fall on my huge hill no matter what. I haven't quit- but my wimp keeps yelling "QUIT YOU IDIOT! What is the piont? You are moving slower than a snail!", but I realized today that it really is all mental- I was just about to quit, but asked myself "why quit? What is wrong?" and I realized my breathing was good- I wasn't out of breath, nothing was hurting (well my knees a little) and that there was no real reason to stop so I kept on going. I have to say I'm a little proud of myself.

I also have to mention that DH noticed how buff my legs are getting! I still need to get a tape measure and start measuring, but I think I am really losing some inches! My clothes feel so much better- I no longer get the urge to unbutton my pants when I am sitting!

Aaron, don't worry you're not alone. I'm another guy in this group.

I really have nothing else to add to this conversation right now so I'll just leave it at that.

W3D2 is done! I really had to force myself to get up and moving this morning. We went to see the Lion King last night (which I highly recommend) and didn't get home until 11. 5:30 game WAY to soon! But I did it and I felt really good.
I have set my first 5k goal. October 6 is the one I plan to run in. It is in my calendar and I told my DH, so there is no backing out! I try not to think about it because it is a little scary!
To Aaron and our other guy, we are so glad you are here with us. Don't let us scare you away!
Keep up the great work everyone! We are AMAZING!!

Ok, I am gonna do my rest day today (not really resting, but walking and core workout, and pilates, and weights, and medicine, but NO running, that is tomorrow).

Tomorrow I will hopefully join you all tomorrow in c25k week 3.

Re: Run For Your Life - week 3 (Aug 5 - 11)
Aaron and Itr...sorry about the feminie talk. Aaron, you are too funny!

Gosh! It is hot! I got up at 6:00 got the kids off to school laid back down, got up at 8:00 and got Ds3 up and to Mom's and then I went and ran. At 8:00 in the morning it is already 80 degrees!!! I don't know what the humidity is but it has to be high because I steppped out the door and instantly was covered in sweat. I hadn't even taken a step yet. There is a chance of rain. on my knees praying "Oh please let it rain!" I had to water my plants this AM they were looking mighty pitiful.

Well I did the W3D3 today. It was great!!! My shins didn't hurt. There were tiny aches and pains occasionally but it was good. My last 3 min were up a hill. UGH! But even though it hurt like **** I wouldn't let myself quit. That marathon I want to run one day will have hills, ****...life in general has hills! I might as well get used to dealing with them. I kept telling myself that my hamstrings and calves screaming in pain were actually muscle being built. That seemed to get me through and up it. You have to think of the payoff.

Calories yesterday were 1587. Decent. I did not work out. I had planned to, but life got in the way. I got tired and it didn't get done. No biggie. I worked 2 days a week off into my August exercise goal, so I should be okay. No more slacking for me though! Which means tomorrow i have to get up at 5:00 Am to get my workout in. UGH! School starts for my class tomorrow so no more going in to work whenever I please. Tomorrow a schedule starts! YUCK! This also poses a very real problem...

I need to work out in the mornings before work. The sun doesn't start coming up until after 6:00. I have to leave to get to work at 6:45. So I was thinking that to get my running in. I get up at 5:30, get the kids to Mom's hop in the car, drive to the park. The sun should be coming up by then...do my run, hop back in the car, get to work...freshen up, change and off to my day. Sounds good. But I am not sure it will work. I don't want to wait until evening, becaue as hot as it is now. I would have to run at 8:00 and it's still over 80 degrees and by 8:00 I am usually wiped out. So realistically I know it won't get done if I wait til then. Plus, who is going to give my kids their baths and get them into bed? UGH! I have gotta find a way to make this work. I have to!

Have a great day ladies...err... and gents!
