Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of August 12th
Hey, everyone!

11.6 miles for me on Saturday. (I just succeeded in switching my long runs from Sunday to Saturday, joe. I like it, because now my rest day is AFTER my long run instead of before it.)

5.2 this morning -- morning weather was great today. About 9 degrees cooler and 35% less humid than last week. Made for a very pleasant run.

I was looking for a 10K or 10-miler to run in mid-September, as a tune up and assessment before my HM on October 13. I couldn't find any 10Ks or 10-milers in driving distance for me -- lots of 5Ks, though. Anyway, after much discussion with some experienced runner friends who also know me & my running history well, I've decided to do a pre-HM HM. Yeah. I'm going to do a very small HM about two hours from my home on September 8. I'm going to do it as a training run, in place of my 12-mile scheduled LSD that day. The course is flat, and it does (scary, scary) have a three-hour time limit. The HM is limited to 250 runners (there were only 100 last year, including only one runner in my AG!).

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of August 12th
good morning. 60 mins of chest/triceps/core with the trainer and then 30 mins on the bike. tonight will go to bikram yoga. feeling pretty good after the run yesterday. thought i would be more sore, but i think the ice bath definitely helped. and then i soaked last night in a warm bath of epsom salts for my aching quads.

ice bath - i started filling the tub with cold water and then jumped in with my clothes on minus shorts and towel wrapped around me to keep warm. poured in 2 - 10 lb bags of ice and then all the ice from the freezer. waited until the water covered my quads and hips then turned it off and sat there shivering for 15 mins. i definitely could have used more ice, but it was still really cold. if anyone else has any hints i'd love to hear them. i definitely think it helped.

peg312 - i have a water belt that only carries one bottle of water and i can't run outside in this heat without it. i wanted one to carry in my hand but the running store was out and the owner didn't think i'd like it anyway. i got between 300-400 miles out of my shoes. not exact because i didn't start keeping track until several months after i'd been wearing them. got a new pair couple of weeks ago and i'm keeping track of the mileage.

creative1 - you run as much in 2 days as i run all week. i'm envious. awesome job!!

carol40 - good luck with the 7 today.

corrina - you should try the ice bath. it is cold, but feels so good afterwards.

ctmama - good job running on vacation. i always have the best intentions, but...i'm going from this friday - tuesday and i'm going to have to fit some runs in.

tawny - good luck with the move!!

wbertha - good job on the 11 miles. i think i started off too slow, i felt like i could keep running forever. i think i'll try to pick up the pace on the next long run.

joes- be careful running outside tonight. you're braver than me.

imogene - wow. you've had a wild couple of days. i can't believe the dude actually tried to grap your leg. you should have given him a kick to the head. glad that you're ok.

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of August 12th
Good morning halfers!

I did it! 7 miles...my longest run ever! I knew it was going to be OK when the first song that came up on my ipod was "Time for Me to Fly" (REO Speedwagon). So my 11:05 pace was not exactly flying, but it felt like it to me. Wore my amphipod for the first time and I love it! Didn't rub me raw anywhere, and I was able to carry everything I needed and even clip my insulin pump to it more comfortably. Also tried some Sport Beans, which were a nice change of pace from the dry glucose tabs. Oh, and as I finished up, the song playing was "I'll Fly Away" (Jars of Clay).

Looks like everyone is going longer these days. Way to go!

Corrina -- 12.8, wow!! Save some for race day

Francesca -- 8 for you...going above and beyond! Congrats on going further than you ever have. Don't know about that whole ice bath thing. Doesn't anyone sit in the hot tub anymore?

ctmama -- welcome back from VC. That's great that your hubby is getting out there too. So is mine, and I'm so proud of him. He came back from his run on Saturday with the fire in his eyes, already talking about his next run. I think the bug has bit him!

Tawny -- congrats on owning your first home! I know what you mean about how stuff can accumulate over the years. You should consider packing and moving to be cross training activities. You may also need your running to keep you sane!

wbertha -- 11 is super! A little waking never hurt anybody, and you covered the ground which is what counts.

joe -- I am fascinated w/ thunderstorms too. Love to sit out on the back porch and just watch and feel them. Have a good 4 tonight and be careful in the heat!

Oh, and does anyone know what "Fartlek -- 8 X 40 second hills" means? That is what's on the training schedule for tomorrow. I'm guessing run up a hill for 40 seconds, then jog back down for 40 seconds and do all of that 8 times?

Happy runs and rests!

Good Morning Halfers

Today is my rest day. I ran 8.8 yesterday, once again I didn't calculate correctly so I was shy on the 9 miles. It was an okay run, but still slow for me. I left the house at 6:45am and it was already 80 degrees with terrible humidity. I had to make a pit stop in the trees by the golf course. If someone ever comes across my deposit they may wonder what large animal has been in their neighborhood. LOL!! It was either in the trees or in my pants.

Great runs everyone.

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of August 12th
Imogene - I'm SO glad I'm not the only one moving - and it doesn't matter what size the place, it still really sucks to do it while training. I guess everyone is right, it's going to be good crosstraining. Sorry to hear about your misadventure with the idiot that tried to grab you - what was he thinking? I'm surprised you didn't double back and punch him. You definitely could have outran him if if you did .

Joe - Don't push yourself too much in that heat - see if you can find some sprinklers to run through while you're out . I haven't checked out any running routes yet, but it's a much flatter neighborhood then where we currently live. I don't know if that's a good thing or bad thing, I'm getting to like the hills in my daily run!

Peg - You're right, it will be so much fun once we're all packed - and this is a good excuse to throw away stuff. I've gotten rid of I think 10 garbage bags of clothes all ready. I can't wait to unpack and have a lot less stuff!

Francesca - I can't believe how brave you are to do an icebath. Just thinking about it makes me cold. Maybe Joe should think about your description of one when he's out running in that crazy heat this evening .

Carol - Thanks for the congrats - and yes, the running will help keep me sane for sure! Congrats on the 7 run...I know what you mean about music being the perfect motivator to run. I found out on Saturday that Johnny Cash seems to match my pace perfectly .

I never sleep on Sunday nights anymore since I started using Sunday as my one morning to sleep in. Must have been awake until at least 1-2am and then up at 6 to run. It was actually chilly when we went out (had my arms across my chest during my warmup) but was sweating in no time. Charlotte died 22 minutes into the run and then my knee started acting up. Pulled the plug on the run at 29:30min (4.7km). No music, no sleep and a bum knee. I was in a foul mood as we did our cooldown, slapping the tree braches that got in my way and snapping at my husband as I complained about Charlotte. Picture a 3 year old throwing a tantrum and that was me .

I'm wondering now if 48 hours is enough recovery time for my knee after my long runs on Saturday - maybe I should be running Monday nights instead of Monday ams and squeeze an extra 12 hours into my recovery time? Or maybe it was just lack of sleep that did me in today?

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of August 12th
Well .. look at you busy lot ! .. had a bit of a post race slump on Sunday and as I had allowed myself a week of rest before I started training again and I did do an hour weights, box and a 6 mile run last week I didn`t feel too bad about taking Sunday off

Today I start my new program to build up to 30 mpw - I get to about 25 mpw with a 10 mile run just before my next half so it fits well. It`s more days of running but shorter runs so I`m going so see how I get on - Later today will be a 4 miler - which I`m planning to do on the TM because I`m getting trapped at the office + I can do a little upper body weights after

I have to get up at the crack of doom tomorrow to get in a 3 mile run before work as I`m planning to leave early for my annual assault on my ear drums ( Def Leppard live at Jones Beach ! )

creative - you really are kicking butt - you`re going to put an awesome time in on your race

congrats everyone on your long runs

halfbyaug .. what happened ????? I`m guess you decided not to run due to injuries - probabrly a wise decision - but don`t leave us ...

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of August 12th
Yikes - we lost our internet connection here at work for a while so I've been out of the loop!

Imogene - what a jerk! That certainly would have gotten my adrenaline going too... glad you didn't fall

Jen - Teehee! I love the comment about the deposit you left. It will really make me think everytime I see a deposit anywhere from now on what sort of animal left it!

Corrina - awesome that you did 12.8!! That's like spitting distance from 13.1!!

Francesca - brrrr!!! I can't imagine sitting in the tub of ice water... I don't even like to get my hands in cold water. Hope it at least does the trick for you.

Everyone is doing great here! Lots of "going the extra mile" hehehe.
Just need to clarify this post from yesterday:
~~~~~~~~~~
I was wiped out by 10 last night so I didn't try to fight it and went to bed. Good news is that I got up nice and early at 6am and still got 8 hours of sleep! The thunderstorms that were rolling through overnight were gone by the time I got up and I was able to go out for my 8 miles (avg pace 10:26 which I'm very pleased with)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
That meant I was wiped by 10pm, not by 10 miles. I ran the 5k on Satuday and 8 miles yesterday so that's only 11 miles for 2 days. I just don't want to take credit for something I didn't do!

So my plan calls for 12 miles this Sunday, but I really want to go to for 13. That'll be my last run that long before my hm so I just want to make sure I go the full 13 at least once before then.

On the subject of shoes... I was soooooo excited yesterday to discover that there is in fact an honest to goodness running store 20 miles from my house.I have been looking to find one that's less than 2 hours away so this was really great news for me! So I went there just to check it out and came home with a new pair of shoes.
I wanted to replace my department store 'treadmill' shoes with some real running shoes and hope that it helps the "calf" pains I started getting a few weeks ago... which it turns out it's more likely shin splints.
The guy at the running store was soooo nice and helpful and full of information. He spent a lot of time with me and asked lots of questions to make sure he knew what I really needed. He was not trying to get me to buy anything which I really appreciated too. So he checked my gait and all that and suggested I try a motion control shoe. Tried on maybe 20 pairs of shoes and finally narrowed it down to 1. I left a very happy customer who is sure to go back there again. Gosh - I keep saying it, but he was just so nice! I've never had a shopping experience like that before.

Anyway - It's been quite a long time since I have looked forward to running on the TM, but Tuesdays are speed days, I get to try out my new shoes and this will be my first run with "Tracey" (remember - that's the name I gave my tm)... what fun!

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of August 12th
Hi everyone! I love checking in to see how everyone has been doing during the day...hear about everyone's runs (good and bad) and rest days...its great motivation for me!

Work is getting busier and I start traveling in a few weeks which has me a bit nervous in prep for my 1/2 but somehow I'll manage...I just have to have a plan and stick to it...I'll be in San Francisco for 5 days and from the East Coast that's full days of traveling...hoping the hotel we are at has a gym so I can at least get in some TM runs while I'm gone...running on vacation is very relaxing to me...gets my day going on a good note and the runs are scenic, cool, friendly...very nice indeed...traveling is a bit tougher though...days are busy, long and the runs will be at night...ok, enough thinking about that...its 3 weeks away!~

I got out and did 3 miles tonight...on my old route which has 4 hills during it...I have just two words to descrive the run...HILLS SUCK! OK...does that desribe it well enough? LOL! My time (on my new stopwatch...I'm addicted to running gear! LOL!) was 29:20...the hills range in size / degree from short and steep to long and gradual...and they all suck in their own little way...LOL! OK...its been a month a since I ran this route and since then I've been on all flats which has been great...I was glad to have run in less than 30 minutes which was my goal but man, it was not pretty by the time I hit that 3rd hill...its the longer one, steep, then gradual, and unforgiving...I did crank it on the 4th one which is at the very end and is short albeit steep...I will say this...I better do this at least once a week between now and the 5K on September 2nd because those hills are what saved me in that race last year...the course ended with a 0.4 mile gradual hill at the very end of the course...UGH! But I was thankful for those hills when I finished.

Hope everyone has a great night...

Hi everyone, been busy, busy, busy. I did manage to get 6 miles in Sat. morning. it was a great run.. Haven't had time to download it to motionbased yet.

It sounds like everyone is doing awesome on their long runs, I better be getting mine moved up, I feel like I'm lagging behind. Its gonna be another hot on this week, I'm just so tired of the heat. I'm exhausted.

Hope everyones Monday started off ok.

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of August 12th
Interesting that everyone has names for their equipment. I have a name for the treadmill that I use at the gym. If it is available, I always use the same one...best view of the gym, clock and tv's. However, I don't think that the names that I have been known to call this piece of equipment are printable. lol

Today was a rest day for me. Legs feel okay but a bit tired/heavy after the long run yesterday. Can't imagine having done the Chicago Half Marathon yesterday in the weather and humidity that we had here.

Scheduled to do 4 to 5 miles tomorrow. The distance will depend on the weather. Tues, Wed, and Thurs are run days for me this week with two being 4 miles and the other one a 5 miler. Keep trying to extend one mid-week run to be a little longer but it just doesn't seem to be happening. However, I am still getting in my LSD on the weekends so I guess my priorities are still okay.

Good runs to all...be careful in the heat.

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of August 12th
ctmama -- in San Fran, if you are staying downtown, get down to the Embarcadero for your runs. It's scenic and very flat, which you should like after your hill run Lots of runners out in the morning, so it feels pretty safe too. And if you can stay over the weekend, check out the farmers market at the Ferry Bldg. I'm not sure if they have it every weekend, but it was wonderful!
