Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of August 12th
spicegeek - i'm feeling your pain. my quads are tight today, but not too sore yet...it was a struggle to walk after last night's session, so i'm sure they will be sore. last friday after squats, my legs hurt until this tuesday even with yoga, stretching, running, icing, and epsom salt soak. and then i did pretty much the same workout yesterday. what was i thinking...actually it was the trainer and not me. i told him that i wanted to be able to walk while i was on vacation. hope your pain subsides.

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of August 12th
Afternoon all,

Ran 8.8 today. Got up and went out for 5 alone. Was not doing so well, body wanted to go faster lungs were not up for it. I comprimised and did about 2 mile fartlek. Stopped at the house to pick up DH. Told him it was gonna be slow cause there was not much left in the tank. He told me I could bag it and go home but what kind of distance runner would I be if I didn't run tired. Won't get me through 13.1 if I bag it. So we finished and started feeling good about 1 mile left. He doesn't run more than 3 so I stopped with him. Have 2 planned for tomorrow.

joe, enjoy the storm but don't get swept away.

Francesca, enjoy your vacation.

gale, have a fun 5k but an even better 10 m.

carol, hope you DH has a great bday. I read your post now I'm craving steak. Had to stop at the store on my way home to buy some. Thanks!!!

spicegeek, your hearing back to normal yet? I'm so jealous

Finally broke down and gave into my potato chip craving. Yeah me. I should be good for a few more days now.

Have a good afternoon all.

Corrina

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of August 12th
Hey .. yes all my hearing is back .. just about !

I was a good girl - I went to the gym - I did my 3 miles - all be it slowly and on the treamill - and I did some upper body weights and a few crunches - Tomorrow I get to box with the trainer who made me do the 500 squats yeaterday ( ok not 500 ... but it was more than 200 ) .. I might have to miss the pads and smack him in the head !

Everyone is doing so great ! ..

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of August 12th
Hi everyone, just a quick check in, didn't run tonight, we are under a heat advisory and it is so humid. Couldn't stand the thought of the dreadmill so I said the heck with it. I still have a killer headache and I'm down for the count. Hopefully, I'll get to feeling better tomorrow, after all its Friday. Its supposed to cool off this weekend. I'm going to try to make up my milage on Sunday.

Talk to everyone later.

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of August 12th
Hi everyone!

Got in 5 miles tonight...hot and humid, but a good sweaty run after 2 days off...so, I'm already at 15 miles for the week with two more days to go...thinking of a couple of 3 or 4 milers to finish off the week at just over 20 miles...then a long run of 7 miles again on Sunday morning.

Question: (well two really)

What's your favorite piece of running gear?

What do you carry keys/id/phone in, if at all?

Good night all!

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of August 12th
Favorite piece of running gear??? do I really have to have only one favorite? I find it very difficult to run without my shuffle, so it is a favorite. My Garmin is a necessity on my LSD days, so it is a favorite. My DD gave me an ironman/woman's stop watch for my birthday a couple of years ago and it goes with me on every run, so it is a favorite. My amnipod (fuel belt) is a necessity for me for all runs over 5 miles in this heat and humidity, so it is a favorite. How many is that?

My keys fit nicely in the amnipod when I go for long runs. Otherwise I use a lanyard and only take my car key with.

Did another 4 miles tonight after work. Felt good and time was good. What's up with this??? Three good runs in a row.

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of August 12th
Back from my run - was scheduled to do 6.5km and did just over - 6.75km. I was going to run this morning but I woke up and realized it was 12 hours since I last ran, so I held off and went out this evening. Had a snooze on the couch after dinner and then husband woke me to run - changed into my running clothes and off we went. I'd forgotten how much I enjoy running at night. It very quickly got dark after we left and the air was cool, with a nice breeze. Much better than running with the sun beating down! Husband thinks it was more difficult to run after having had dinner, but I felt fine. Felt fine the entire time actually - think I've found my comfortable pace - 10.23min/mile seems to do it for me. I wasn't breathing too hard at the end, was sweating but not overly, and felt like I could keep on going.

Joe - I work at a recreation/community centre - we have a weightroom onsite (and a pool and gymnasium and yoga classses). It's incredibly convenient to have the treadmills so close, especially in the winters when its too cold to go out at lunch and it's a great escape to burn off some steam!

ctmama1029 - My favorite piece of running gear techno-wise is my HRM - I haven't run with it lately (it's packed for the move) but I love it! . My favorie pice of running gear clothing-wise is a red and white running vest my husband gave me a couple of years ago for my birthday. Oh, but I also love my Adidas running suit (shorts and jacket) mostly because the cuffs are terry cloth, perfect for mopping up sweat!

If I am running with my husband he carries the key and uses the phone to listen to music off of - and the phone has our ICE number in it. If I'm not running with him, there's usually a little pocket in the band of my shorts for key and ID, or if I'm wearing a jacket, it has a zipped pocket. I've also worn one of those very thin waist pouches that we wore under our clothing while backpacking in Europe - that's great for those things as well and isn't bulky.

tommashe - Hope your headache goes away - I hate headaches brought on by humidity .

Corinnabear - I have a weakness for potato chips too (es[especially with dip) and avoid them as much as I can - what kind did you end up snacking on?

Everyone else - it's almost Friday!! Enjoy any upcoming runs. Another week of training almost behind us!

I wear a road id and carry keys , Gu, $20 and my keys

I never go out on a training run without my ipod but never use it in races - I love my Welsh Dragon "cute guy magnet" running shirt for big races ..

Post running - my trainer bought me a stick as a gift a while back .. god send !!!!

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of August 12th
Favorite piece of running gear - Do shoes count? My NB1060s.
Keys, etc. - Shorts pockets. I started out running in compression shorts, but wearing a waistpak really bothered me... Tried running skirts, but the lack of pockets was still a problem. I now run in ordinary nylon-type shorts, with a pocket on either side. Keys in one, cell phone & shot bloks in the other.

Looks like I'll round out the week at 34-35 miles, with my long run of just 8 tomorrow.

I'm looking for high-test caffeine infusion centers at the moment. I'm in immediate need.

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of August 12th
Spicegeek and Francesca -- don't envy you the sore legs. I stopped doing any lifting for my legs upon starting training for the half. But it will make you stronger and those legs will be lookin' good! Spicegeek, I'm thinking your trainer is trying to wear you out so you can't beat him up!

toots -- welcome back! In answer to your ?? about fitting in the 5K, I'm doing that this week. I just reshuffled the schedule, substituting the 5K for my tempo run and doing the long run first thing this week. So far that worked out OK, except for not having a rest after the long run. We'll see how the 5K goes.

Corrina -- way to go on the 8.8 miles! You really pushed through to finish it. Good mental training, as well as physical. Sorry for planting the steak idea, but hope you enjoyed it! Our dinner was good, but I only ate half and still felt almost sick afterwards.

Sheila -- hope you are feeling better and the weather cooperates with your running this weekend.

ctmama -- way to go on your weekly mileage!

Hmmmm....favorite piece of running gear....guess I'd have to say ipod, but Garmin is right up there too. As for keys and ID....don't usually carry a key, use the garage opener keypad; ID is a strip of bright colored plastic looped through my shoe laces. On long runs I carry a lot of stuff (insulin pump, glucose meter, lancing device, test strips, carb source(s), water, paper towel, etc.), and the new amphipod is WONDERFUL for that. On shorter runs it's insulin pump (clipped to shorts), carb source (shoved in sports bra), ipod (in pocket) and Garmin.

Wbertha -- congrats on three good runs in a row. Enjoy!!

Tawny -- now that's an idea...get hubby to carry the stuff. That's part of their job . Glad you found your preferred pace.

Joe -- ummm "weather nice" and "temps in the 80's" do not go together in my book. I'm still dreaming of the nice cool fall days ahead. Glad you enjoyed it though. My steak last night was a ribeye by the way. Gotta have a little fat in my steak.

Rest day for me before our 5K on Saturday. The tour of Texas Stadium yesterday was fun! Best part was they gave us about 15 minutes and a couple of footballs to play catch on the field, kick field goals, etc. It was all adults on the tour, but we were all acting like little kids running around out there. Astro-turf field is so nice and spongy, would be great to run on!

Happy weekend to all!

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of August 12th
What a day yesterday here in Houston huh Joe? It took me two hours to get home. There were cars flooded out everywhere. But, when I got I got to run in the rain. Until a stupid loose dog scared the @%*# out of me. It was a big black lab. I didn't want to run in fear that he would think I was scared running and take a bite out of my back side. I was so mad. I needed to run so bad yesterday. It was going to be a therapy run. HA. I finally got away from him and ran a little bit more but was so frustrated that I just ran back home.

Favorite stuff - hmmm. I would say iPod and Fuel Belt.

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of August 12th
Good Morning Peeps

Out for 5 at 5:30am this morning. Thanks to the hurricanes and tropical storms KS is a little cooler now. It was 74 degrees with less humidity.
I had an interesting encounter this morning. As I was sitting on my front step drinking a bottle of water, as I do every morning before my run, I heard some rustling in the rock bed next to our house. I flipped on the porch light to discover that a snake had a 1/4 of a toad in his mouth. I beat the snake with a stick and the toad was free. Now the snake is lurking under our sidewalk. Lovely! I guess I will no longer sit there without the porch light on.
