Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of August 12th
Ahhhhh! Snakes! You are brave brave brave...I would have been back inside in record time! I don't even like to see the dead ones squashed by cars on my runs...shiver!

Thanks for all the thoughts on fav running gear...I am thinking of getting an Amphipod pouch as the car key tied to the drawstring of my shorts and tucked inside is no longer really comfortable as I up my mileage and I really would like to avoid chafing...which I have experienced from the upper edge of my sports bra...ouch! No pockets on my shorts so that's not an option.

Guess I should get online and do some ordering today!

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of August 12th
Hello all, I'm training for my first half and wanted to know if I could join you all here. I just did my longest run ever on Monday (couldn't get out on Sunday, like normal). I'm looking for a group I can ask questions and get support/motivation.

So here are my questions so far:

1) Should I lose my iPod on my long runs now since I probably won't be able to use it during the race?

2) I don't like to carry anything, do you have any tips to stay hydrated/energized?

I think that's it for now. Thanks in advance. Oh and in case you're wondering I'm running the Baltimore HM in October. And I have two 5K's coming up, one on 9/8 and the other 11/22.

I look forward to getting to know all of you.

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of August 12th
Deer, skunks, barking dogs, and cats, cats, cats are all I see in the mornings. Glad I'm not dealing with snakes!

Joe -- When I began MAFing, I was able to run only a few steps before my HR went over MAF. It was pretty frustrating at first. Now I can run as much as a 1/2-mile stretch at a pop without going over... a little more on my one long, steady downhill section (where I can actually get my speed up some, too!). I can also control my pace better now, so that if I bump the MAF while running, I can slow back a little and often get back under for as much as another 1/4-mile without slowing to a walk. The LHR training is making a big difference for me in terms of endurance -- I know that I could reap huge benefits if I did it for a year or so... I'm not that patient, though, so I'll do my fall races and then MAF religiously until February, when I'll begin adding a little speedwork moving toward a spring race or two (possibly a M?)

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of August 12th
Welcome Tawanda! You will love the support and encouragement you get here.

What I can't live without? My mp3 player, running shoes, Wal-mart cheapy watch and nike sun visor. I'm pretty basic when it comes to running gear. I bring along the bare mininum. I don't even like wearing my water belt on long runs but I have to for hydration.

I took a few pictures of the snake eating the toad before I bopped it on the head. It is definitely not something you see everyday. I would post them but I can't ever figure out how to post a picture on here.

Tomorrow is a rest day! Yay!! Then the dreaded 10 on Sunday

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of August 12th
Morning all,

Tawny, good run. I can' run after I've eaten makes me feels sick. I snacked on Kettle Chips New York Cheddar and herb. They were Good. When I snack I like to go all out.

spicegeek, do you like the sick? I think that's on my Christmas list this year along with the Garmin 305.

Joe, sorry you didn't get to run in the rain but at least you didn't float away. No the chips wern't baked. If I fall off the wagon so to say I like to make it count.

fit45, OMG! I loved my NB1060's but can't find any here in B.C. I've been looking on line but all the pairs are in the states and I have a problem buying anything I can't try on first even though I know they fit. I worry about returns and duty and all but I think I am going to buy 2 pairs anyway as they were the best shoes I've tried.

carol, NP on the steak idea my family loved it. Sorry you didn't feel better after you dinner. Sounds like you and DH had fun at the stadium.

Peg, glad you didn't float away either. People need to be responsible pet owners and keep their animals in a fenced yard. I have a dog follow me home every once in awhile, then stick around for a few hours. Glad you didn't get bit.

jmuhlig, a snake eating a frog, wow you can't get that just anywhere. What kind of snake? 5 at 5:30 way to go! I didn't drag myself out of bed till 9 am today.

cheyjoecat, Welcome to the group. You will find we are a great group with lots of help. I don't use my ipod on shorter runs just on my long run if I am running alone. I don't think I can take mine on the 1/2 I'm running so I'm working up to none on long runs. Wean yourself slowly. I wear a water belt that carries 710 ml bottle and has 2 pockets for cell phone, keys, gum, change and lip balm(need to keep the lips soft and hydrated). I use it all the time so now I feel underdressed if I don't have it.

As for my favorite running gear I have to say it's my most comfortable running bra, cause you know if you are chafing it's no fun. I carry my cell phone and misc. things in a waist pack. Not usually keys as I run around my neighbourhood. If I have to get into a car and go somewhere to run it probably won't happen. Too much work.

Have a great day all. Heading out for my 2 later today. Have a yard sale to set up for at my friends.

Corrina

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of August 12th
It was just a gardner snake, a rather large one, but I knew it was harmless. I'm a bit of a tomboy so handling a harmless snake isn't too big of a deal to me. I just don't like to be suprised by them.

I try to get all my runs in the mornings so I don't have to worry about them when I get home from work. Running in the morning just makes me feel better the remainder of the day.

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of August 12th
Wow busy thread -

I am kind of off on my training this week - course for the last several weeks for that matter. 7 weeks until HM day.

I have only run 8 miles this week and since my RP is sidelined for a week- no LSD this weekend. Mtn Biking 16 instead.

Jen- Ooh, with the snake - I bet it was actually kind of cool to see.

Becka - welcome to the board. - I don't post nearly as much as I lurk.

halfbyaug - congrats on finishing your HM!

Howdy Joe!

No time for the rest of the shouts but everyone else - have a great day and weekend.

Later gators.

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of August 12th
II'm at work and am off for the next two weeks for the move (Ack!) and managed to clean out my email and finish everything I wanted to get done about an hour ago. I'm leaving work early to go to the CanFit show (getting free workout clothes for some website work I did on a clothing site) and figured posting on here might kill 10 minutes or so .

I've really nothing to say since my last post..you can all ignore me if you like .

I AM looking forward to getting out tomorrow for a 10km run..it will be my longest run todate, knock on wood! .

Oh...the post about snakes and other animals reminded me of a sign in our neighborhood warning us of coyotes. Unusual for suburban Toronto for sure. I've only ever seen squirrels, rabbits and cats and have a huge problem with dogs (on leashes) lunging at me as I run past. I learned my lesson when a fierce poodle jumped and snagged the leg of my shorts - I give all dogs no matter what size a wide berth when I run past now. Oh, I forgot the hissing Canadian geese. Dunno what their problems are?

Anyhow...Happy Friday everyone!!

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of August 12th
Hey All,
New Folks, WELCOME!

I don't have time to read through and respond... another thing I haven't gotten to this week. It has been kind of a slump week in a lot of ways, but that just happens sometimes. I think the next two weeks are just going to be a little rough around the edges as I work up the move and figuring out some other things in my life and the constant juggling/balancing.

Anyway. I went to the gym Tuesday and lifted weights and rowed on the erg, and ran a little bit once the erg broke.
Wednesday - Hills
Thursday - 5.6 miles and more weights (I just rediscovered the gym this week and jeezem do I love it!)
Friday - No sleep means no running. Tomorrow was supposed to be a rest day, but I'm going to do some miles before my long run on Sunday (11m). That I will fit in.

Next week I'll be back to following the schedule... I hope.

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of August 12th
Fourth four mile run in four days...and it wasn't too bad. Temps in the 80's seem very comfortable compared to the 95 and high humidity of the past few weeks. Think it is the big reason for my runs improving. Tomorrow is a much needed rest day and will be filled with family stuff. Then a long run on Sunday. Not sure but am hoping for 10 to 12 miles. It is supposed to thunderstorm so we will see. I know that I cannot do that many miles on a treadmill. Then I really, really would need a "therapy run".

Hey, I really like the term "therapy run" hope you don't mind that I am planning to borrow it and use it the first chance that I get.

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of August 12th
Happy Friday everyone!

Welcome to the new folks! This is a GREAT group!

A quick 2 miles tonight at 19:22 ... it was raining earlier in the evening so went to dinner with DD and DH...while DH was reading stories to DD I decided to get a couple miles in before it got dark...little hillwork in there too...not bad...I'm consistent at least! Going for 3-4 tomorrow morning and then my long run on Sunday, between 7 and 8...weather looks to be mid-70s and less humid for the weekend which will be nice...

Have a great night all!

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of August 12th
Howdy all and welcome newcomers!

I must admit I've only been lurking the past 2 days and not responding. I have not run since Tuesday and it's really depressing me. Those 2 little words "shin splints" have yanked away THE focus of my life for the past 4 months or so. I have 15 days till my hm and I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I can run tomorrow. I'm so jealous of reading about all of your runs... good and bad! Right now I would so take a bad run over no run!

OK - so in reponse to some of the comments / questions...

...My favorite thing for running is Freddie the Forerunner (305) hands down.
...I also have the Amphipod water belt - love it!
...have the Amphipod satellite clip-on pouch for days I don't need the water belt.
...I always take my phone with me and have my RoadID on my shoes every time I head out, and take my house key along unless I hide it under something in the yard instead.
...Have had my mp3 player on for every mile except my only 5k so far, and 3 miles during one 7 mile run.

Spicegeek: what the heck is a "stick"? Your trainer gave you one? I must have missed the explanation of what it is?

Jen: Ugh! Snakes?!?!?! I would FREAK if I saw one while sitting on my porch and would be outta there in a flash!

Carol: good luck on the 5k this weekend... can't wait to hear your post race report!

Joe: Gawd I've been so sick of the heat, but now there is just a ton of rain / thunderstorms in the forecast again here... better than lots of places though... it's ok to run in a nice light rain but not in a flood or tropical storm!

wbertha: OMG 12 miles on a treadmill... I would need more than a therapy run to get over that! 6 or 7 is the most I've had to endure there...

ctmama: have you tried Body Glide? I just got some a few weeks ago and apply it where the top of my sports bra meets the skin and also on the upper arm where it would rub on my shirt or my Mp3 strap... so far so good and no chafing (when I remember to use it!)
