I got a job today, working full-time for the National Guard. I will keep going to monthly drills as a soldier; this new job will be Monday through Friday in an office. I have mixed feelings about it: on the one hand, we won't have to deplete our savings
; on the other hand, I was really enjoying my free time!
In fact, at first I told them I wasn't interested, but they basically insisted, apparently because they didn't have many (any?) other qualified candidates. So I will be going to work on Monday like most other people.
I hear they have a pretty good gym.

DH, Congratulations! Always good to be contributing member of society...
5.1 miles walking in about 1.5 hours. Only 78F today, felt a little warmer walking in the sun. No sweating today.
Mike, you going to get your miles in this week?
Rich, hows the foot doing?
Ray
I did 3 miles of Nordic Walking on the railtrail this morning... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gZ_K6p_zUdA&feature=fvwrel I emphasized pushing off considerably more than the video I've attached and am probably going to feel it in my back, arms and shoulders tomorrow, but it's a good workout that's similar to cross country skiing. Splits were 15:04, 14:46 and 14:47.
D.H., so far, the workout doesn't seem to have bothered my foot and I'm hoping it stays that way, I'd love to keep doing this while my foot rehabs if I can.
The foot's doing ok Ray, I'm just going to take it one day at a time and not run again until the soreness is gone.
Congratulations on your new job D.H., no cement floors though, right?
I'm retired at the moment, but would take a part-time job in a heartbeat. I miss being around people, the routine of going to work each day and the workplace environment. It'd have to be something easy though, I'm not interested in working hard any more...lol
Enjoy life, this ain't a rehearsal...
Good walking, gentlemen.
Rich, you seem like an over-achiever type guy, I bet you could find something part-time if you put your mind to it. Maybe you would have to get some new skills training. At the high school where I taught the last four years, I was friends with the custodians, and one of them did moonlighting every winter and spring as a tax preparer. It was a lot of extra hours for him over and above his regular job, but he liked it, I think not only for the extra money but also because it gave him a chance to use his head.
Tax prep is just one example. The schools are always looking for part-time help as crossing guards, after-school instructors, etc. Also school bus drivers, and drivers for those little school vans. You could go online and look for resources to help seniors find work. I think I heard that AARP (to which I belong) recently put out a book like that. Here are a few links for you:

I am chagrined to be going back to work on Monday, but you know what, it is reassuring to have someone want me. When you are sitting at home, even by choice, you naturally can't avoid wondering, "If I wanted a job, could I get one?"
