running and walking - counting miles

Hi. I started running recently for the first time in my life. I'm doing all runs on a treadmill. Today I also bought a pedometer that's due to arrive this week. I'd like to start tracking walking and running miles. Anyone interested in joining me?

I know there are a number of us that use Nike+, or something similar, to track our runs. I used to use the one that goes with an iPod which is basically just a fancy pedometer with a sensor that goes on your shoe and the iPod keeps track of your steps and turns that into all kinds of fun info, i.e. distance, pace, calories, etc. Since the battery in my sensor finally died I'm using the Nike+ app for my Droid which uses GPS now instead of a sensor so it doesn't work so well if you're on a treadmill. This morning I did w6d1 of couch-2-5k and I went 2.92 miles with an average pace of 13'37"/mile.
Today I completed the "reward run" of DJ Beatsmith's 5K interval training (http://www.djsteveboy.com/1day25k.html). The workout was 6,425 steps (10 minutes of walking at 135 beats per minute + 35 minutes of running at 145 beats per minute). All I tracked today was the workout. Once the pedometer arrives, I'll count all steps I take throughout the day, walking and running. I can already see that it will be a challenge logging 10,000 steps/day, considering my busy work schedule through December. Better to do something rather than nothing in the next few months, right?
Hi, Jeb,
Thanks for running with me. How long have you been running?
I hadn't heard of the couch-2-5k. It's good to have an alternative in case I want something different.
It's good to know about the different types of pedometers, too. I was overwhelmed by all the options and finally relied on my friend's research and got the same thing she has. It's an Omron JH-720ITFFP, and it's supposed to work well with treadmills. It arrived today, and it's now set up and ready for the next run, so I'll let you know. According to my calculations, today's workout was 6,538 steps. If the pedometer comes up with the same figure, I'll know it's accurate.
The training I did today was w2d1 of 8k. I'd hoped to start with week 1, but for some reason that podcast didn't upload to my phone and it wasn't worth the extra hours of frustration (Iphone does not make uploading easy!). Starting with week 2 was a challenge, but a doable one.
