20s - Wednesday - It's all downhill from here!

Morning gang!

I figured I'd actually start the thread now that I'm back from vacation. It turned out to be a lot of fun heading back for my high school reunion. We had a solid turn out too, probably 16 or 17 out of 22 people.

Overall it was a blast, I really enjoyed catching up with old friends that I hadn't talked to in years. It was crazy how many people had kids, most with 2 kids already! It's strange because none of my friends in my age group here in Portland have children yet. I wonder if it's just an urban trend to hold off on children, because most of my former classmates chose to continue to live in fairly rural areas. It was just interesting how we were all in such different places in our lives.

The biggest shock was running into a girl I used to work with at the local grocery store, she was 11 or 12 at that time. I ran into her at the bar and she has a 1.5 year old! That sure made me feel like I had one foot in the grave let me tell ya!

I wasn't the most active person during the last week, most of my time was spent eating. I did however go for a run yesterday morning when I got back into town. So that's something.

I'll have to try and go back to read some of the previous threads, I hope everyone has been doing well!

Re: 20s - Wednesday - It's all downhill from here!
Good morning 20's !!

I did a 3 miles on the treadmill yesterday, planning on aerobics tonight.

DH has the day off today and is planning on painting a couple of walls in the new apartment and then starting to move stuff over, we both have tomorrow off, so hopefully most of it will get done today and tomorrow.

And I have a triathlon this Sunday!! it's an all ladies tri, I've never done an all ladies before so it should be cool.

crexion I know everyone here wished you a Happy Birthday while you were gone
wow you had a little graduating class! I thought mine was small at 76! (they had to put 5 towns together to get enough kids for a school!) It does seems like having kids early is more of a rural trend, or maybe it's just that people who want to have kids early tend to also want to live in rural areas. I think most of my small town IL high school classmates have kids.

Re: 20s - Wednesday - It's all downhill from here!
DH just called and told me our new apartment is super awesome! Our patio is bigger than we thought it would be and apparently we have a really nice view of the entrance fountain. I can barely stand to be at work the rest of the day!

crexion I was going to say that 1000 people is huge!, but when the next town is 70 miles away that's a little different.
quote:
I've been reminded that everyone is just trying to make a good life for themselves and their families and what that means is going to be different for everyone.

I think that's a good thing to remember, sometimes I forget in day to day life, but everyone is so different and what makes one person really happy might be terrible for someone else.

slightly on subject story Everyone at work keeps telling me I need to buy a house in Houston, this is a terrible idea for DH and me, but they dont' understand this.

Reasons it's a bad idea for us to buy a house:
1. We have no intension of staying here more than 2 more years, the market may not recover well in just 2 years.
2. A house makes me feel tied down, I hate that
3. Houses are expensive here, we don't want to deal with a big payment
4. I'm tired of yard work, house maintanance, and all that stuff

oh well, no big deal really, but people are always telling me about houses for sale or new subdivisions going up and I tell them oh we're not in the market, and they look at me like I"m crazy, it's actually kind of funny.

Re: 20s - Wednesday - It's all downhill from here!
Happy Humpday, ya'll.

I'm so sleepy today! Lifting wears me out, but running leaves me with a lot less energy spent and I have trouble sleeping the night of a run. I ended up waking up at 2 AM and baking muffins!

Yesterday's run was good. I was a little shocked, but I am definitely happy. I've never been a good runner, so these are major strides for me. Today is a lifting day and I have plans to torture my workout partner with some Crossfit.com stuff.

In other news, someone proposed to me at the post office. I'd never seen this man a day in my life, but he swore to me that we'd be getting married. Ha!

Crexion - Welcome back! That's quite the small graduating class. It seems to me that it would be more fun since you'd really know everyone.

Heather - Good luck on the tri! Is it a full or a sprint?

Re: 20s - Wednesday - It's all downhill from here!
Hi guys,

I'm on my prep period here at school. Chloe and I ran 2.3 miles this morning (there was actually a pleasant breeze, felt great!!!!) I plan on getting 6 more miles at the gym and then lifting after school. Getting up at 5am 3 days in a row is taking its toll...I'm tired today! I am in bed by 10pm but maybe it needs to be a little earlier. I am starting to get the hang of my new school and am even learning names of some students already!!! It's pretty hard when you have over 160 students. The class size here is huge. I was spoiled at my old school.

I am going through soccer withdrawel this week. It's preseason time back in NJ, where we would have doubles (2, 2-hour practice sessions a day) and I miss my girls from NJ. One of my favorites emailed me over the weekend and it was great to hear from her. Some of my students from NJ found me on facebook (and myspace) so it's been funny to get their "friend requests". I don't really use myspace or facebook that much and these kids have like a billion friends on them so its cute. It's nice to be remembered by my old students although it makes me a little homesick for my old school.

Crex: I feel the same way about high school people. I am definitely the one who moved furthest away and have no plans on kids for the next 4-5 years. Oh well. I am just on a different wavelength than a lot of them right now.

heathherrick: Good luck at your triathlon!!! I would love to start doing them sometime. Oh and I hear you on the house stuff. We are not in a situation to buy right now either...we have no idea how long we're going to stay here.

bcg The proposal at least made you smile, right? (or really creeped you out...) Either way its an interesting story...

Re: 20s - Wednesday - It's all downhill from here!
Hey all. I haven't been able to get into the forums much this week. Any free minutes I've had have been spent waiting for the page to load! Today seems to be working a little better ... or maybe I'm just luckier today.

Anyhow, big news in my world is that I've actually been able to run a little. I tested my knee with a two mile run on Saturday and felt fine during a three mile run on Monday. I'm going to stick with an every-other-day thing for at least two weeks, so hopefully my knee will continue to hang in there okay!

Otherwise, I've just been up to the usual stuff. Irish Paul is back from Ireland, so we met up Friday night. I was out with some of my friends, and he was out with some of his friends, so we all met up which was unexpected, but good, because now Paul's met just about all of my city friends. At any rate, I think we're going to try to grab a drink or something this evening.

And in a half hour, we have Make Your Own Ice Cream Sundaes at work. It's like Random Collegiality Week here. Last night we had a big work happy hour (or, more accurately, four hours). Not sure what's going on, but I ain't complaining!

crexion: I'm happy to hear that you had a nice vacation and that the reunion was such a nice time! I totally agree with you about the city vs. suburbs/rural thing when it comes to babies. Literally, every single person I know who still lives in my hometown (even people I only know tangentially) has at least one kid. Meanwhile, only one person in my extended group of friends has a child. Just think everything kind of gets bumped back a couple years in the city!

Any my that's a small school you went to!!! And a small town you grew up in!!! We had two times as many kids in my high school as you had in your whole town. Crazy! One of my best friends went to a very small high school, and it sounded really nice in a lot of ways. Everyone was super close, and she and her sister are actually the only girls I know who are still close friends with people from high school. (Maybe it's just my experience, but it seems like guys tend more often to stay friends with their high school friends, while girls tend to be closer to the friends they make in college and just after college.) Anyhow, good stuff! I'm glad that you had a nice time!

heatherrick: People are funny about houses, aren't they? My roommate is moving to South Carolina, and I guess her family is being somewhat over-the-top aggressive about her buying something rather than renting something. She's been to Charleston literally twice in her entire life. She knows next to nothing about the city -- whether some areas are better than others, whether she'll like it at all down there, etc. She's got some minor savings, but she's going down there without a job, so who knows what kind of income she'll have. It's just kind of not the right time for her to buy something, and I don't really understand why her family is being so psychotic about it. Odd!

At any rate, you know what's right for you! And I'm happy to hear that the apartment is even better than you'd hoped it would be! I'm sure you're dying to get home to see the place!

bcg: Random proposals are humorous! My favorite random proposal was the guy sitting outside the grocery store in my neighborhood who asked me, "Will you marry me? I've got food stamps!"

Okay, almost time to make sundaes! Gotta run!

Re: 20s - Wednesday - It's all downhill from here!
hey all,
not too much to report on my end. I had a 15 mile run on Sunday with a co-worker that went very well. The weather here in the northeast has been pretty cool and that helped a ton.

Then last night, I went for a short 3.75-4 mile run. I'm not looking to push it too much because I'll be doing a 100 mile relay this weekend. You can actually see more about it here[/URL" target="_blank">. I did this last year and it was a blast.

In any case, with a tough set of legs to run in this relay, I'm taking it easy this week so that the legs hold together. I'd like to get out of this thing unscathed (injury-wise)

Oh, you guys should get a kick out of this. Last Friday I went to a party in Southie (South Boston) and had a pretty fun time. Stayed out till 4:30am...it's been a long time since I've done that. It was nice to see some friends that I hadn't seen in a while.

Anyway, the highlight of the evening was a hottie of a blonde looking to hook up with me (yes folks...lightning had struck ). Of course, there's always something right? In this case, the aforementioned hottie was 19...nice (I'm 28) We were talking and dancing and stuff and the next thing you know she takes my hands and pulls me aside into the hallway. I was pretty drunk at this point and came close to initiating some smootching action when my roommate walked by (he and a couple others had been observing this interaction) and whispers in my ear "it'll feel good now but your conscience will be killing you in the morning" I pulled a ceast and desist. Boy did I feel old...**** morals... ...

Re: 20s - Wednesday - It's all downhill from here!
Today is a busy day, so I'm going to make a quick post on my lunch break. I went out for my 5k run as planned last night. I went out nearly 20 minutes later than I usually do, and it was about 8 or 9 degrees hotter than it has been the last several weeks. Granted, CA doesn't have the humidity that a lot of you are dealing with, but the heat was really wearing on me.

All in all I did okay - 33 minutes with a couple walk breaks and a couple stoplights, which isn't much worse than what I've been doing in cooler weather), but I felt like death when I got home. I guess that means I could be going faster on the cooler days, right?

Luckily the BF had started dinner while I was gone and all I had to do was wring out my gear and take a cool shower. My legs are really feeling the harder run today, too.

I'm going to do a bike ride tonight. I don't mind the bike nearly as much in the heat because you get so much more wind in your face ... although I'm not skilled enough to drink while riding just yet, so I have to stop for water

Bal, I know guys are sensitive about such things, but that is only 9 years. My BF and I are eight years apart... but I guess we were 21 and 29 when we got together, which sounds like a lot less than 19 and 28. Ah, well, morals get in the way of a lot of fun stuff, don't they? Good job on the long runs, btw - glad Boston isn't getting to hot right now.

Confetti: I know you live in NYC, but still. You meet the oddest people. I have never been proposed to by a random person!

Crex: Happy Birthday! I agree, your town is crazy small. I grew up in a town of 30k and I consider that to be tiny! (Of course, Portland feels small to me, too)

heathherrick: Had you not seen the apartment you're moving into? I'm kind of confused. I'm glad it's better than you expected, though - that's always a good thing. Oh, and I hear you on the house thing. If I ever get rich I'm all about buying a house, but homes are SO expensive here that even if I found one I could afford, it would totally run down and probably in a really bad neighbourhood. Really, where I want to live I can get a reasonably cheap apartment or a ridiculously expensive house ... no real competition there.

I have my annual evaluation at work today - woohoo. Of course, I talked to my boss about it last week and she told me how great I was and then said "I think you know how you did this year" ... so hopefully that's a good thing I guess I'll report back later (unless I get chastised for too much fun on the internet...

Re: 20s - Wednesday - It's all downhill from here!
bgc wow a random proposal?? sounds kinda fun and flattering, even if it's really odd at the same time.
The tri is a sprint, I'm doing all sprints this year and planning on 4 or 5 olympics next year and hopefully a 1/2 iron in 2009, which is pretty amazing considering that just a couple years ago I claimed I would NEVER run more than a 5K!

julie I think it's sweet that your soccer girls miss you so much! Do you feel like the super cool teacher since they want to keep in touch?

confetti way to go on the runs!!
I want make your own ice cream sundae at work! Oh, wait, we do that here, I think we're doing it at the end of this month, but I want it today! Have fun!
and you're right, I can't wait to see the new place!

Bal that relay race sounds really fun!
and the blonde story is too funny! You must have some good friends to watch out for you like that. At what age does it become a little icky to date someone who's "only" 19? When I was in grad school, guys had to be at least 21, I was only 22, 23, and 24, but I guess there's just something about being able to drink legally...

Re: 20s - Wednesday - It's all downhill from here!
Hey Maggie, I missed you earlier. So we saw the model of the same apartment, but not the inside of this exact apartment, that's pretty standard around here. So DH called all happy earlier because we have a veiw of a fountain on the property that we didn't really think about when we decided on the apartment, and the patio is bigger than he remembered. Oh and it was all finished and looked great when he walked in to make sure everything was good.

Far cry from the apartment we're moving out of where they had just started installing the carpet when we were supposed to be moving in, and a few other things that I won't get into, we were Not happy.

Good luck on the eval, although it sounds like you don't even need it!
