While the course was great, the start and finish facilities were definitely lacking! I have never run a race where the water stations were dipping dixie cups into a lined trash can for water! yuck Also, the post race "party" was nothing. They ran out of water bottles at the finish....Please plan ahead for next year! It can be warm in South Florida! Dixie cup sized water servings are just not enough!
PROS: Nice course--down the Hollywood Broadwalk, over the Hollywood bridge and through nice shaded neighborhoods. Volunteers on the course were helpful. Medal is AWESOME.
CONS: First and foremost, customer relations are TERRIBLE. I posted the suggestions below on the facebook page, and was immediately attacked by a race coordinator for not being more positive. He almost immediately thereafter deleted his own posts. My posts were later removed from the page as well, as were others' who were critical of the obvious inattentiveness to this race. (Others pointed out the total lack of hydration on the 10K course; the apparent complete absence of medical personnel, etc.) In another apparent attempt to run from their failures, the official website has now removed all reference to the Florida race, as well all comments posted there.
Second, hydration and nutrition. There was inadequate electrolyte drinks on the course, and inadequate food at the end. Also, water was being distributed in an unsanitary fashion--being scooped out of trash bags.
Third, there was NO prerace information (e.g., where and when was packet pickup) on this race on the website www.hollywoodfhalfmarathon.com or on the facebook page. Only one email was sent out a few days before the race.
Fourth, communication on the course. There were no clocks anywhere except the finish, and even there there were two clocks with different times. There were no milemarkers for the last couple miles.
and this is admittedly minor compared to the restthe men did not get a tech shirt as promised when we registered. We got a plain cotton black t-shirt, the same as the volunteers were wearing. Both mens and womens shirts looked like they were leftovers from the California run--no mention of Florida at all.
