chased- girl you need to teach me how to focus. a 50 miler? you are too bad a$$ for me chickie!

erika- CONGRATS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BQ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! wow. i'm so impressed. well not really we knew you could do it. i've never "known" anyone who has done it. sigh... can i be your running groupie? please?!!?!?!?!?!

okay for little old me- i did my 40 minutes. this weekend sucked in terms of any kind of training. i snuck in little runs with my kiddo here and there but nothing huge. it felt good to run my 40 minutes today.

tomorrow i'm going to go be a bra model at the local hospital for some women who are becoming certified bra fitters. i hope the "girls" are as big as i claim them to be.

Re: Marathon Trainers Week of August 19th
Think you might want to use the warm epsom salt for injury. Warm bath, stretch, and end with ice. Always end with ice is what doc told me. For after LR, just end with ice. I've gotten lazy, but use to ice immediately anything that hurt for even a minute, and think that diligence was good.

Erika, GREAT JOB!!! Time to celebrate. While I know it's not the race you wanted to run, and you are in such great fitness, we all believe with better pacing you would nail an even better time, it is so important to celebrate each milestone, plus this is the stuff that drives even harder for the next race. Can't wait to hear the details. Will you run Boston?

Chased,
Have you lost your freakin mind? 50 miles; Aren't you still nursing your ITB? And you have no idea how you will feel after doing the Goofy HM & MM. Maybe you young people recover better than me, but for me the marathon takes a lot out of me. I can only run slow afterwards, and have have to rebuild miles slowly. I also seem to get sick afterwards easily. Your call, just make sure your knees are OK first.

Bugs has such a lovely way with words.
Chased, correct response here is "ok, mom, I'll be careful!"

Yes, Boston is on the calendar for Patriot's Day 2008... Now just gotta figure out some logistics. Should be fun! Although I'm not thrilled with training for a spring marathon, at least this one is in mid-April. That early March stuff is too hard (i.e., too cold for long runs!).

pace2pace, I'm from the UK and my marathon will be the Leicester Marathon which is about a 12 mile drive from where I live and the route crosses a path near my workplace. Lots of opportunities to run the route which is great.
erica, Congrats on the BQ and great pictures too. Catch you on B & B later. Good runs everyone.

Cash ? Thoughts and prayers are with you and your friend? Any news? Keep us posted.

Bugs ? Running while sick? Ugh.

Erika ? Boston Bound! That?s cooler than cool.

Elaine ? welcome. It?s awesome that you get to run sections of the marathon in training. A few weeks ago we made the 45 minute drive and ran the hardest section of the Akron marathon. It was a HUGE confidence booster.

7.5 mile tempo run this morning. Started off in the pouring rain, which I didn?t mind. After a mile, TP came up with the brilliant idea that I could run on her TM while she did her stationary bike. Fine by me even though we were already soaked. The belt kept slipping and I got paranoid about falling so we headed back outside to finish. The rain had stopped but started back up the last mile of the run. It was really nice.

Re: Marathon Trainers Week of August 19th
Erika, great RR and congrats again. You're amazing to pull out a BQ after starting off too fast. I'm sure you will have a blast in Boston!

Bugs, um, calm down. The 50 miler isn't until next April. Obviously if I'm still having IT trouble then I won't do it. Training for an ultra is different than training for a marathon, especially for a first timer. Training wouldn't be much different than what I plan for Disney and is one of the reasons I decided to do the Goofy. I've had this 50 on my radar for a long time. Mapping out long range training goals was to see if I had sufficient recovery time between the marathon and ultra, not to try and squeeze in more mileage.

spd, coolrunning was bought by Active several months ago and it sounds like they are now getting around to migrating the boards. The running log is moving too so make sure to run a back-up occasionally in case they lose data... which I'm sure they will.

mrinertia, you are a better person than me to have headed out in the rain this morning. I stood on the doorstep for a few minutes and decided I didn't want to get pruney!

Sooo, since I didn't feel like running in the pouring rain (or more to the point, the six inches of standing water produced because our streets don't drain well), I did 14 on the treadmill. It was so much fun it should be illegal. Really. Actually it wasn't bad until my movie ran out. I didn't want to stop to start a new one so I ran the last five staring at the door in front of me. I told DH we need to get a multidisk DVD player stat!

Sorry Chased, I must have over-dozed on drugs.

My throat is so sore, really feels like strep, and I'm in the no-man's land with no anti-biotics. Suppose to run 5 today. Trying to pretend to the family that I'm not that sick, so I'm not a party pooper.

Re: Marathon Trainers Week of August 19th
Cash-best wishes to your friend..

Erica-CONGRATS on your BQ.

bikegirl--I expect a full report on the bra modelling

Looks like I will be running the Columbus 1/2 marathon Sunday. The Morrow 1/2 was cancelled since only 7 people have signed up.

James, let me know if you are still planning to run it. Would like to say Hi if you'll be there. See your planning a 17 long run this week, so dont know if you are planning this 1/2 or not.
My schedule also calls for 17, but I think running the 1/2 will be more beneficial for pacing in a race setting. With an 18 and two 20s still to go, I dont feel bad about a shorter long run.

Re: Marathon Trainers Week of August 19th
Good morning all!
I'm new to this thread (obviously). This year will be my first full marathon. My spring/summer training has been hit-n-miss due to work, but as I officially started training last week, I felt just as good as I did last year getting ready for the half, so I'm optimistic. I have 2 questions for the group.
1) I'm using Hal Higdon's training guide with some modifications for scheduling. Has anyone else used his guide before?
2) Going from a 20 mile LR for training before beginning the taper to the full 26.2 for the race, how does that last 6 miles feel for the first time at that distance?
BTW, my race is the Jacksonville Bank Marathon in Florida. Talk to you all soon!

Re: Marathon Trainers Week of August 19th
A HUGE congrats to Erika-we all knew you had it in ya! I know I posted on your race report but what you just did is awesome! Makes me want to go out and run a marathon right now.............well maybe I'll just think about it, ya thats it, thinking about it..........whew! Lost my head for a minute.

Welcome to Elaine3112 and HEYDOC. To answer your question doc, alot of us have used Hal's programs and been successful, I think we have all modified them to fit our particular needs, (work, family, physical requirements, etc.) so feel free to do so, only caveat might be, make sure you do the long runs and DO NOT cheat on them. They will be what gets you thru and to prepare you for the 3,4 or 5 hours you will be running.

Bugs-hope you are feeling better soon..............when you get to mothering someone on this post, makes me feel all warm inside, you sure do keep a good eye on us!

Cash-my thoughts are with you and your friend, do you have any news yet? Keep us posted on his condition, hope it is improving everyday.

10 miles Sunday, 6 miles on Monday night just 'cause I could, and planning a short 4 tonight. Still biking to work and home everyday, getting darker in the am now, love the ride home after work, clears the mind and a small crosstraining workout to boot!

Good and easy miles to all.

Jim

Re: Marathon Trainers Week of August 19th
Welcome Heydoc!

Many of us have used Higdon with good results. Personally, I prefer to make on of those 20 mile runs more like 22 miles.

Many times when you do a new longer distance, its hard. For example your first 15 miler might be terrible. Next time you do that distance it's not nearly so bad. Sometimes even the first time isnt so bad, but more likely the first time.

There is a saying about marathons, the first 20 miles is the first half, the last 6 miles is the second half. Not in distance but in effort.
