What kind of music do runners like?

OK ... we need a new topic to banter about ... if this is anything like the reading post, we'll cover the gamut from Homer & Jethro to J.S. Bach and everything in between.

Me ... while running I like classic rock ... at home I'll crank up The Beatles or Bob Dylan ... five musical geniuses.

I like all kinds of music (except gangsta rap and some country.) My library contains everything from classic rock, opera, bluegrass and jazz to irish folk songs. Living overseas for 9 years I have a LOT of foreign music in multiple languages. Typically, music accompanies all my activities.....EXCEPT running. When I run, I like to focus 100% on my body and breathing and don't want to be distracted. At least not at this stage in the game. (only been running for about 6 months) I think that as I get more comfortable and start training for that marathon I will add music to give my workouts something new and exciting and help with the distance...Figure if I can run 2+ hours now without anything, just think what I can do with music in my ears!

I have an interesting story. A friend of mine has a band in L.A. (They are trying to hit it big! They have played the viper room and some other pretty cool venues.) His band is called Kiltergrey and they have an album that they produced so sometimes I listen to that but they also have a myspace account where they occasionally share music and have links to other new bands that they like...there's a girl named adrina thorpe that sent me one of her self-produced albums too but kiltergrey had a link to this band called okgo, who also had this crazy backyard dance video floating around on-line. I was able to get one of their cd's and was listening to it for monthes before I started hearing one of their songs being played all over the place..target commercials, the superbowl...etc. I liked their cd so I thought it was kind of fitting that they really became huge because of their famous treadmill routine video. As an outside, pounding the pavement or trails kind of runner that video is the only way I want to see a treadmill!!! HA HA! Also, I'm a big fan of Jack Johnson but I ALWAYS race without music. I love that space you can get into in your own head running a 20 by yourself and 4 a.m. and speedwork is much better more effective without music, I think.

I teach group fitness, so I listen to a lot of the CDs I use for classes. But sometimes it gets old, so I also listen to classic rock.

Anything loud-Red Hot Chili Peppers is my favorite. I also like any kind of funky foreign music (Turkey, Africa, Latin America).

I listen to it all! My iPod has everything from Dolly Parton to Zeppelin. When I run solo I switch up the tempo depending on the distance I am going or mood I am in when I head out the door. Most of the time I go out without music and just enjoy the quite of the morning & the click click click of sprinklers on the golf course.
Happy running!

I teach aerobic also, so I listen to a lot of that stuff.

But, to be honest, I listen to all of the 'typical' running music - Madonna, Michael Jackson, Vengaboys, Janet Jackson, etc.
Basically, I'm a horrible dancer so the only thing I can do to music that normal people dance to is run. haha!

Anybody here listen to Tobymac? He makes upbeat music with awesome lyrics. It pumps me up! He's kind of a mix between rock and hip hop.

I don't listen to tunes while running outdoors, but I do use my iPod to get through treadmill and elliptical workouts. I really need something fast paced and peppy. I like ska, punk, pub music, and some hard rock. Groups on my workout playlist include Flogging Molly, The Bouncing Souls, Green Day, Anti-Flag, AC/DC, The Toasters, Iron Maiden, The Pogues, and NOFX.

I never run without music. I think most of the time it's just "noise," but I like to have it. I listen to a lot of Gwen Stefani, Fergie, some Macy Gray, Melissa Ethridge. I tried listening to country when I run, but it just never worked for me :) ... so if anyone has any suggestions on what country songs work for them when running, let me know what they are!

I'm in the same groove as Jshill224, i.e., classic rock does it for me. One of my favorite CDs is Beggars Banquet by the Stones. I also am into the origional 1969 Led Zepplin album. And don't forget the Doors, Animals and Rascals -- great stuff! My kids are in their mid to late 20s, so I have a lot of their music. More current stuff (last 10 years) that I like includes Audioslave, Stained, Red Hot ChiliPeppers, Green Day, Linkin Park. I can also get into Madonna and Stevie Nicks. I also have a small corner of my right brain reserved for country, such as Kimmie Rhoads (spelling?), Willie Nelson, Nickle Creek and Johnnie Cash. Lastly, I like stuff like Pearl Jam and Nervana. About the only thing I don't like is gansta rap and what ever it is playing in the 5,000 watt traveling mega bass boom box that pulls up next to me at a red light.

I grew up in the 60's and worked at a Radio Station in the 70's and early 80's. Needless to say my ipod consists of 15% Classic Rock; 5% Alternative and 80% 70's music...everything from McCartney to Steely Dan to Chuck Mangioni.

Sometimes I enjoy listening to Glenn Millers "In The Mood" to start my run

I listen to all types of music when I run. It depends on what kind of mood I'm in. When I just want to take it easy and do a slow jog, I like listening to Jill Scott or soft rock, or soft R&B (Anita Baker, ole' skool Frankie Beverly & Mase for example). When I'm in the mood for an intense pace, I have to listen to Bon Jovi (Livin' on a Prayer is one of my mantras!), some Disco, and Ole' skool!
I do believe that the more up beat my music is, the faster I run!!!!!!!!!!!! Happy Running!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok, no one laugh too hard. For some reason I just can't seem to escape the 80's (just music, hahaha). I have filled up my Nano with Prince, English Beat,INXS,Howard Jones, and the list goes on. All the songs tend to be high energy, and usually over 4 minutes long, hahaha. It really carries me through my long runs, and I enjoy the heck out of it.
