Advice: Getting new shoes today

Hello all. I am looking for advice on a good running shoe. I have been running for about a month now and I need good shoes that support my feet. I have been running with shoes that are approaching two years old and they are obviously quite warn. I bought a pair of running shoes about six months ago when I was running and they hurt so much they made me give running up all together. The store that I am going to is specificly for runners and there is a huge selection but I would still appreciate some advice. Thanks

Hello, your best bet is to have the workers at the store pick the shoe for you. I work at a running specialty store and what we typically do is look at customer's arches to determine how high, low, etc they are, and then watch them walk. We also take things such as the amount of running someone may do as well as their build into consideration. Pretty much, just ask for help. My advice to you is to be open-minded though, because if you are going to a running specialty shop, and a local one at that, the employees typically know their stuff. Listen to what they have to say and good luck!

Re: Advice: Getting new shoes today
Hey,
I also have had my problems with buying wrong shoes. Besides listening to the salesperson, here the lessons I have learned (you never know if you are getting the best salesperson):
- if you are heavy or run on concrete, get extra padding ($$)
- if you have flat feet or fallen arches, get arch support ($$)
- when trying on shoes, beware any friction or supersnugness since it just magnifies on long runs; don't be afraid to ask for lots of different sizes, even different widths (2E is the next size wider than normal)
- shop around if you can, especially in this stage where you haven't found the best shoe for you; different brands work better for different feet, not just in size but in shape
- you don't have to buy a pair of shoes at that visit to the store (I find it impossible to walk out without a pair of shoes, costing me hundreds of dollars in wrong shoes)
- use your shoes in dry conditions on pavement at first so that you have the best chance of returning them if they are bad
- once you find the right shoe, you'll probably keep getting the same model; keep a mileage log on shoes; don't wear the running shoes for any other activity

Thanks,
Dan
