    Spring Training Plans - Half Marathon anyone?

    I'm running in my first half on August 10 in Vancouver Canada.  The Lululemon SeaWheeze.  I've done several 5k's but have made it a personal goal for this year to train and finish the SeaWheeze.  I'm only running 2 days a week. 3 miles at a time and do crossfit 2 days a week.  I'm starting the couchtohalfmarathon training next week.  I'm really glad I found this website I've been needing a little bit of a push to train harder.  Thanks for sharing all your stories, and if anyone has any advice of course Its definitely always welcomed.

    Which Half in NC are you going to run, our weather could be prefect or hot and humid.  Get use to drinking some water.  You might want to slow your long runs down some, they should not be run at race pace (at least not all of them).  Every  third one run your last 1/3 at goal pace.

    I am running a 9 mile trail race in heavy rain in the morning!  Then going up to UNC to see my daughter and watch the UNC and NC State basketball game, Go Heels!

    I have a Half planned for mid-May.  It will be my 2nd Half. My first was in October.

    My longest run before it was only 11 miles.

    I can't describe how much of a confidence booster it is to finish.  You feel on top of the world....and hungry!

    Good luck to all of you on your 1st Half.  It's a great distance that is challenging, but doable.

    good luck!!!  i'm training for my first 1/2 in june but i'm nowhere near your time!!  i'm hoping to finish in under 2:50:00 so i wouldnt dare give you any advice!!

    Last hard LR before my half.  2 hours after the 1st hour 3 X 10 min @ 1/2 pace with 2 mins of walking between.

    Every other week is probably good.  The pig is not bad until the run up to the park (apprx miles 5-7) where you turn around and get to run it down!  A couple of bridges but they were not that bad!  I am ready for my race, I am doing a lot of volunteering this week for the race.  The Pig is a great race.

    Spring Training Plans - Half Marathon anyone?

    I ran my Spring Half on Sun the Quintiles Wrightsville Beach.  This is my home course, I also spent lots and lots of time helping set up the course and working the expo and helping clean up after which was hard after running a hard race.  The weather was perfect temp at the start 56 and by the time I was done 65 with light wind.  I ran a smart race which is new for me and resulted in a 30 sec PR 1:37.54.  My splits were 1) 7:49, 2) 7:30, 3) 7:26, 4) 7:25, 5) 7:26, 6) 7:30, 7) 7:24, 8) 7:23, 9) 7:23, 10) 7:26, 11) 7:24, 12) 7:21, 13) 7:10 and .10) 6:25.  The reason I posted my splits is for all of you that have not run a half or only a few that it is best to stat slower and build!   Going out to fast will cost you in the end!  Good luck to all of you and I hope ya'll have as good of a race as I did!!!!!

    BOSNPM - Incredible race for you!!!!   All your hard work and training paid off....good to know!!

     

    I'm frustrated because I'm only in week 4 of my training and I can't imagine being able to almost double my long runs at this time!!  My longest is 8 miles and I've only done that twice.  I'm sore and my calves are so tight until mile 5 or 6 and then they adjust. I just keep thinking, how in the world will I get strong enought to turn around and redo what I just did.....yikes!  Well, I have 13 more weeks of training so if I look back 4 weeks ago even, my longest run was 5 and now I'm up to 8. That's my little glimmer of hope!

     

    I'm very frustrated because I cannot get any faster due to a heart condition (rapid heart rate and two of my valves leak).  I see my Cardiologist annually and have my annual stress echo and it always shows that there have been no changes over the last couple of years so my doc is OK with me running.  But DAMN I cannot increase my speed for anything!  I get to 80% of my MaxHR in the first mile and I hover there for the entire run.

     

    Any advice for tight calves?  I haven't had this issue before.  Stretching doesn't seem to improve it?!
