Hey, I've recently got back into running but I seem to be having knee pain every time I go for a run be that either treadmill or outdoor running. I'm debating whether or not it's to do with the bog standard "nike dart 9" trainers I'm running in that I got from soccer sports? I've not had my gait analysed so I'm not sure if they're the problem or not. I'd rather not have to go to a running shop to buy shoes as they're significantly cheaper online to buy (rubbish running shops in Cardiff).
It seems to be a pain around and behind the knee cap (more in the left knee than the right) and I get it every time I go running after a mile and a half or so. I normally do quite short 3 mile runs so I don't think it's to do with over training. Cheers for any help.
Sounds like chondomalacia (osteoarthritis of knee cap). Going up or down stairs will also cause pain or discomfort and there may be some grinding. Try doing exercises to strengthen the VMO muscle in your thighs as well as the anterior tibialis. Before running try a walking warm-up, then use a foam roller along the front, back and side of upper leg (knee to hip). Ice and elevate post workout. Having properly fitted shoes for your strike type is also important.
have you considered using the barefoot running shoes to build up your natural muscles? not sure what other peoples opionions are, but i like the barefoot option. i figure if our ancestors could hunt all day without shoes, why can't i. i'm still prett new though, so who knows if m yopinion will change as time goes on.
