Ive started using an elliptical due to getting shin splints during training for Bataan Death March. Does the 20% increase rule apply to the elliptical as is does treadmill/normal running? I feel like I could do a lot more time, distance, and amount of days I use it, but I do not want to over do it and injure myself more than I already have. Would appreciate any help and input on this issue, thank you in advance!
for myself, the elliptical is far easier than running outside. i can do multiple times the distance and speed which would leave me to believe that there are different rules for the elliptical versus running. not sure what they are, but i'd say if you don't feel like you're stressing yourself, then you're probably ok.
The elliptical is low impact, so it should be easier on your joints. That being said whenever you change your exercise routine let your body dictate how far you push. The elliptical changes the stress areas of your body so you might get sore in different muscles than from running. Make sure your stretch routine includes stretches for your hip flexors (psoas), glutes and spinal erectors. Vary your training between distance days and speed interval days.
