Dear Voice in my Head,
You're right. I'm too old, I'm too fat, and throwing the cigarettes away today doesn't make me an ex-smoker.
You're also right that I never finish anything, that I have the worst diet possible, and that these shoes might or might not be a good choice. And I've never done anything particularly athletic in my life? Yeah, I know already.
And I already know that I've got that little "thing" next to my heart that the doctors call a sarcoid.
But Voice? You forgot something. This is "me" you're talking to. Yes, I'm going to be embarrassed as heck, running around the trailer park like some sort of a dork who thinks that she can call herself a "runner" some day. I'm going to clutch my cell phone like it's going to somehow start pumping my legs, heart and lungs for me. And guess what? I had enough diagnotistics done that my doctors said physical activity is good for me. And don't forget that even though I'm old, over 185 lbs., and slightly gimpy in my left knee, I'm also not sitting in this chair any more. I'm just perverse enough to stop listening to you, Voice.
Because I've got an ace in the hole. Maybe more than one. I've got a buddy who's going to run my first 5k with me, and she's been through it, and she has pledged to help me be accountable. And I've got another ace in the hole, too. I already started. Yes, it was one day. Yes, it was mostly a brisk walk. But I got my stretching in, and I've got some knowledge of how this is done. I work a very, very, very physical job for an old bat, Voice, or did you forget that? I know how to push through until I get the job done.
And I happen to LIKE the cold, Voice, so don't think you can stop me with that "The weather is GARBAGE out there!".
Voice, this time you aren't going to stop me.
See you at the finish line, Voice! And then we'll see who's astonished, won't we????

I gave 'em up about 9 years ago. Took up running shortly after and never looked back.
When your feet hit the floor in the morning, promise yourself you're not going to smoke today. Don't worry about tomorrow, just take care of today. Watch your coffee intake, nicotine has a way of blocking caffiene's effect, so if you cut out the nicotine, you can get really wired.
Take it one day at a time and before you know it, 2 weeks have gone by and the worst of it's over. You go girl, you can do this!
Enjoy life, this ain't a rehearsal...
Love your post and I know you will be able to tell Voice, "I told you so!!" As Rich said, take it one day at a time. Be consistant. You will conquer!

Well, I can't say I've never been athletic, but I've never been much of a fan of running. Never smoked (My Dad heard the Surgeon General say it may be hazardous to your health and put out his last cigarette right then, and I never tried one). I have dropped about 50 pounds over the past year and am back down to a weight I had not sen since my early twenties.
But, I'm 57 and I just started C25K in March. In week 4 now and picking my first 5K race for the end of April or beginning of May.
You keep telling that Voice of yours wherre to get off, and keep putting one foot in front of the other.
Before long, you'll be amazed how far behind you that starting line is.
Thanks so much, everyone!!!! I'd say "you don't know what your encouragement means..." except something tells me that you know exactly what it means. I just want to thank you all for taking the time to post. I need it.
I have no stop watch, mp3 player, smart phone to help me with my journey... but resourceful me found someone willng to loan me their ancient ipod so I can d-load one of the free (about what I can afford) podcasts for c25k. I was concerned that carrying the ipod would be an issue, but discovered that the stretchy pocket in my hoody exactly fits the ipod. I won't need anything new that I can't afford (ear-buds, player, etc)
Someone literally gave me a pair of new brooks running shoes that fit me very well (I occasionally feel my left toes want to fall asleep). I've been working at breaking them in gently. They're going to have to last as long as I can reasonably make them. Shoes, of any kind, are not in my budget. Getting them was the weirdest little piece of serendipity I'd ever experienced. (From a dear lady who had no idea that that I was contemplating becoming a runner, nor that the one important thing I lacked was decent shoes. Yes. This really happened. She just walked up to me one evening and asked "What size shoes do you wear?")

What was that, ole' pal of mine? I'll quit after the first day? Where you surprised to find me out there?
I guess that gorgeous running trail was just too much for me, voice, and I guess I didn't hear you saying "there are probably scary people there. It's probably loaded with scornful, derisive "serious runners". It winds through neighborhoods and you KNOW there will be mean people hooting and laughing along the route at your tubby-self, rolling down the trail. Besides, it's getting dark, and you're going to get mugged."
Sorry... the temptation of that trail was just too much, Voice. Incidentally, it was perfect. Weather in the upper 40's (f). Cardinals and bluebirds? If I'd listened to your telling me how stupid I am, Voice, I'd have missed seeing my first robin of spring.
Voice, to be fair to you... you seemed a bit more quiet today. Is there any chance you and I could get to be allies? I'd like it if we could. I have a feeling that you've got a message that you're just having trouble expressing to me. If you can use a kinder tone, and be a bit less cruel, you and I could do this together. No? Well, maybe when you're ready, then.
Did you notice that the running parts were seeming pretty easy, Voice? I dedicated them to you. I was thinking of you as I kept running. For those moments you could have hit me with every low blow you had, and I don't think I'd have heard you.
Anyway... I'll see you Saturday, Voice.

And there isn't a runner in the world who would scoff at you for doing what you're doing. Hang in there, keep your chin up and don't look back!
And yeah, I know encouragement this early in your journey is important. Remember, one day at a time!!

I started running in 2007 at the age of 48.
I was an overweight, out of shape lifelong couch potato.
so far I have lost 60 pounds and I am running my 6th full marathon Saturday.
Getting Fit at Fifty
Nice post!!! When I was 50 (3 years ago) I went to an orthopedic dr. for a strained hamstring and he actually said (and I quote) "Well, you're 50 now, it's time to quit running and take up something like biking". I have since run 2 marathons and 3 half marathons, and planning more. I now try to only see doctors who are runners themselves, since it is clear that many non-running medical professionals not only do not understand the drives and rewards of the sport, but (like this knucklehead) make recommendations not based on diagnosis, but stereotype.
Don't listen to anyone (even that voice in your head ). Keep Running!!!
I am 52 and had lost a little bit of motivation after completing 4 marathons and a handful of halfs but I wanted to let you all know that reading your posts has re-motivated me to crank it up again..
