Re: The Long Haul - WEEK 8!!
Alright, so I finished W8D1 and it went really well!! I made a decision that I would drop my speed just a bit, from 5mph to 4.7-4.8, and wow!! What a difference it made! I finished the 28 minutes, and could have definitely gone longer. I think I will stick with that speed for a while.

Keep up the awesome work everyone!!

Re: The Long Haul - WEEK 8!!
I'm so glad y'all are doing so well. I seem to have hit a wall at 20minutes. I don't know what that's about, but the 25 minute run kills me every time. I wind up walking for at least a minute.

It doesn't help that I went to that google maps pedometer thing where you can map your route and find the distance. =( Very disappointing to find out that my total distance- including warm up & cool down walks is only 2 miles. I'm thinking maybe the hills around here are killing me, but if I run in the neighborhood south of mine, it is flat as a pancake. Maybe that would be better for me. Trying that theory out tomorrow... going to try a Week 7 day again.

Re: The Long Haul - WEEK 8!!
Hey everybody. I guess that nasty headache on Saturday should have told me something else was on its way....how 'bout a lovely sinus cold? I ran W7D1 yesterday, but my teeth hurt so bad later in the morning that I had to go to the pharmacy and find some relief. Today is somewhat better, and I'm not sure what kind of shape I will be in tomorrow at 6am. Oh well - I'll give it a try, and if I have to walk, then I'll repeat a day later.

Way to go Long Haulers!

Re: The Long Haul - WEEK 8!!
Hey all! I did W8D1 this evening and it went well until the last 5-7 minutes when I was feeling rather winded. I've dropped my speed down quite a bit so it's kind of disappointing that I'm still having breathing issues. Over the weekend I got fitted for new running shoes and those seem to help a little bit.

Keep it up everyone!

Re: The Long Haul - WEEK 8!!
Hi everyone.

I just finished Week 8, Day 1! I was supposed to do it yesterday, but I had walked 5 miles on Sunday and my legs were still sore, so I put it off until today. Of course, work was long today, and it's hot, and I didn't even start until 8PM. But it's done. At the end I even added a few minutes, so I totaled about 30 minutes. But I'm running really slow, so that only comes out to 2 miles for me. Once I'm more comfortable doing the 30 minutes, I'll work on distance and speeding up a bit.

There's a 5K walk/run on Sunday that I signed up for. I signed up as a walker (because I'm chicken), but the course is flat, so I may do some running in there too. It's one of those sanctioned races, so I was afraid to sign up as a runner. At least I get a cool T-shirt, lots of freebies, and it ends up in the football stadium so maybe I'll see a Steeler or two!

Re: The Long Haul - WEEK 8!!
I completed W8D2 yesterday. It was a hard run -- not physically, but emotionally because we had to put down a much-loved 8-year old rabbit the night before.

I deliberately took the pace pretty slow, and finished my 2.762 mile run (thank you, gmap-pedometer.com) in a little under 35 minutes. I kept my heart rate mostly in the upper 140s/lower 150s, just to make sure I wasn't pushing myself too hard.

Next week I'll extend my route to a full 3.1 miles, just because I'll be doing my first (running) 5k at the end of September and I want to get a sense of how that'll feel. I'm pretty sure that if I keep the pace down I should be able to complete the run without any trouble.

I'm looking forward to taking care of week nine and moving into OHR.

It's truly inspiring to read about all of your running triumphs, trials, and tribulations. You are all amazing!

Re: The Long Haul - WEEK 8!!
Good morning group from HOT Mississippi, at 6 am the temp was 78 and the humidty 95%. You will never know how much all the posts help me, we know how each other feel as we read your posts. We each have the good days, the bad days and the days when we try to tell ourself to stop the run early, not to run today or many other excuses that we can come up with not to run. But with this group encouraging each other we can make it, you guys are the BEST!!!

Roxanna, yesterday was the first morning run at USM. I went down and ran with a friend who is just starting to run outdoors, he has been running on a TM. The program that they are using is much like our C25K, the first week is has you running 2min and then walk 3min X 5. The second week is run 3min walk 3min X 5, it is a 8 week program ending with the 5K run on Oct 20. There was at least 30 in the 6:15 run, I will be going down Thursday to run with Tom again. Good luck on your 20min run, I know you will do good!! Stop by and let us know how it goes, we are all pulling for you.

Today I ran 3 miles again, my time was 38min 35sec. This is the first time I have thought about quiting before the end, I just got my mind on something else and the next thing knew I was only a few laps from finishing and feeling good again. It sure feels good to finish each run, I put my hands in the air because I am a winner, we don't have to beat the clock or the person running with us to be a winner, just do your best and keep on keeping on!!

Re: The Long Haul - WEEK 8!!
Hi everybody,
Checking in...I finished W7D1...the run went great, but the music on the podcast annoyed the snot out of me...don't know why, but I think I will make up my own playlist for this week and stop complaining!!! Sorry to hear about your rabbit Don...it's hard to lose a beloved furbaby. Shout out to Sarah...how's your ankle doing since you've started training again? Question to the group...do you find yourself running on your rest days? I have done shorter runs lately on my off days because I feel the need to run. I don't feel as good on the days that I don't run...I'm becoming an endorphin junkie, I suppose. I did rest on Monday because I had too many other things to do, but what are your thoughts on running every day? I value your opinions and just want to say thanks for all the great support you guys give...you are the best!!! Mary

Re: The Long Haul - WEEK 8!!
Hey there everyone! Today was an off day for me, but I thought I would check in...

Mary, I think its awesome that you want to run on your days off!! And I guess as long as you aren't pushing it, its no problem. But I am certainly not an experienced runner and probably shouldn't give running advice!! As for me, on my off days I do about 45-60 minutes of cardio. The elliptical, bike or walking on the treadmill. I feel guilty if I don't get my but moving. Funny thing, I used to look forward to the "off" days so I wouldn't have to run, and now I look forward to the run days!

Way to go everyone!

Re: The Long Haul - WEEK 8!!
Mary - I'm with you on the podcast thing!!! What's with the guy laughing in the background?

I don't think I could actually call what I did today W7D2; maybe W7D1.5. Still have a rotten sinus cold, so I didn't feel up to running at 6am. So - I decided to go after work/before supper, as hubby wanted to BBQ. (Hey - that's fine with me!) So - there I am at 5:15 pm; 26 degrees Celsius - high humidity, sun shining brightly, and the breeze blowing in my face. And my nose running. I think I walked just as much as I ran, because I just couldn't breathe.

At least I lost lots of liquid - sweating bullets, and blowing my nose. But I didn't trip while blowing, so that's another bonus.

Oh well - here's to Friday, and hoping for better results!

Re: The Long Haul - WEEK 8!!
Hey Jazzy, good luck with your 5K. Walk when you feel like it and run when you feel like it. But mostly, have a good time.

Today was an off day for me. I force myself to take one full day off. I'm running 3 days and working out at the gym 3 days. I can't see myself sqeezing in another running day unless I drop a gym day. I may do that. I'll just have to spend 2 1/2 hrs. at the gym instead of 1 1/2 hrs. I talked to a personal trainer today. I was trying to figure out the minimum amount of time I needed to spend at the gym to maintain my muscle mass. I don't need any more muscles, I just want to keep the definition I already have. Between this weightlifting and running, I don't have much time for anything else. Of course working kind of gets in the way of all this exercise too.

W8D3 tomorrow. Running in the dark again. Kind of creepy but definitely cooler.
Hang in there everyone

Re: The Long Haul - WEEK 8!!
I took an extra rest day today. I found out my crappy run was due to my monthly visitor. I'm feeling better though and will probably run again tomorrow.

On my rest days, I try to swim, or do pilates or yoga. I used to do some strength training exercises, but it was just too boring for me. I too look forward to my run days. I rarely take 2 days off before starting a new week.

Re: The Long Haul - WEEK 8!!
Thanks for the good thoughts, dogRN. We miss our rabbit terribly, but her quality of life would have been terrible so we had to make the hard choice. She's better off for it, but it doesn't make us feel all that much better.

I just wrapped up week eight a couple of hours ago. Did another 2.7562 mile run in 31:01. My HRM was acting wonky for the first quarter mile (I'm pretty sure my heart rate was above 84), but settled down and started making sense after a brief stop to futz around with it.

I kept things up at a pretty good clip for the first two miles, then consciously tried to cut back my pace a little for the last .75 miles. I'm not sure I was very successful at slowing down. The run was challenging, but I felt like I could have run a bit further at the end.

Here comes week nine! I've mapped out a full 5K/3.1 mile route around my neighborhood and I'll be running that next week. I'll definitely be taking it easy the first day out (Sunday)!

On my off days, I usually do about 30 minutes on the elliptical. I do one of the pre-set programs; one of them is pretty easy, but I still work up a good sweat. The other one is quite challenging. The one I choose depends on my mood and how I feel physically after the previous day's run.
