Re: a-WEIGH-we go!! August 27- September 2
Mary - I live in Portland, TX(across the bay from Corpus Christi, TX) and it is almost always hot, humid & windy down here. I have been married 13 years to my gorgeous wife who just started her first day as an 8th Grade Math teacher today!! She went back to school 3 1/2 years ago to get her degree and graduated this Spring, so we went on a week long vacation to Jamaica to reconnect with each other this summer. We loved it and hopefully there is enough of the island left to return to next year. We have 4 great kids, 3 boys (14 1/2, 13, & 11) and one sweet princess who is 4 years old. We are a very active family, at least the kids are, as all the kids play soccer, the boys are on 3 separate competitive traveling teams and I coach my daughter's 4 year old team. The oldest 2 boys are also on the Jr High & High School Cross Country and Track Teams and place pretty highly at each meet. That is something I will always be proud of is inspiring them to run, as they got excited about track and CC when I was running and training for the Marine Corps Marathon (which I didn't get to do). We used to run 5ks in the area together and hope to do that again soon. My daughter is also in gymnastics and, soon to be, ballet. We are both on the Local Soccer & Baseball Boards as well as being a Club and High School Soccer Referee. As you can tell, I have lots of time to fit in a run. I used to run at night, but I was also on a huge project out of town, so I would run M-Th at night while I was out of town and then have a long run on Sat. Being at home with the family, I don't get as much time, so I am having to force myself to get up early and run, otherwise I will probably not get a chance to squeeze a run in. I am not a morning person, so this will be a stretch for me, but I do know that I feel a lot better when I run in the morning, because if nothing else, I know that I got my run in today!! I used to love seeing people's faces when I would tell them that I ran 10 miles before coming to work. I setup this training plan for 8 weeks, and it just so happens that there is a local Half that I have been wanting to run for the past few years that will happen in exactly 8 weeks, so that is my goal. I plan to run it, but I don't know about racing it. I do know my limitations. I know that I can go out right know and run 13 miles, not very fast and I might collapse afterwards, but I could do it, but my main focus is just having a goal in mind. I want to be able to run it in 8 weeks and still feel pretty good about my run. Once I do that one, I will create a new training schedule and probably shoot for some 5ks, because they are more prevalent down here. My ultimate goals: Run the Marine Corps Marathon, run a Tri-athlon, and possibly one day to do an Ironman(but we'll see on that one.)

Jared Welcome to our group. You will definately get the support you need here and we are always open to advice and support too!!! You seem to have a great plan so that is an awesome start. Mary is our steady early morning runner. Me too when I'm not being a slouch!!!!! Share tidbits about yourself and you'll get to know us and we'll get to know you.

Mary 100 mile month. All I can say is WOW!! I usually run when we are camping. I use the dirt road into the place. Someone marked the 1 1/2 mile mark so it is a good turna round point if I don't feel like doing the whole thing. This year with so little rain the road was darn dusty so that made it a bit tougher and then my foot went berserk so that was that. Next year...

Melanie Good plan on starting off with a brisk walk and seeing how you feel. Nothing wrong with a good walk now and again.

see ya..

Re: a-WEIGH-we go!! August 27- September 2
Michelizda!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WOO WOO!!!!!! I'm so excited for you! what a great time and great race! Bravo!

Howdy gang. I'm back from Chicago and despite a bit or soreness, i'm ok.

So, I DNFd this race. And I'm ok with it!

Background: I don't race. I've done 2 5ks and 1 sprint tri. I also don't run that much. This was an olympic/international distance tri. 1500m swim, 40km bike, 10k run. I had to rent a bike in chicago and that sucked because I wasn't 'one' with the bike, and it was a road bike (i train on hybrid) so the body positioning wasn't great. But it was ok, and I felt ok on it. I was also doing this race with my sis who trains quite seriously, so I was kinda the slacker twin. And completely ok with it.

In the wee early hours of the AM, we set up transition on an incredibly muddy hill of grass. This is the largest triathlon in the world (Guiness Book approved!) and there were about 8500 athletes. CRAZY. But I gotta say,. the event staff was amazing and things were pretty smooth. I grabbed some food to take out of transition and went to wait 3.5 hours for my wave start.

Walked around, saw lots of of my sister's friends and training buddies and was able to cheer a bunch of them on, which was great. I'm a really good cheerleader at races, so that was fun. Soonafter, I realized i didn't really pack enough food and had left a lot in transiiton. I ended up with an apple, a pack of sport beans, and a pretzel. Not enough, but I figured I'd just chill out in T1 and have a big snack.

Wave started at 9:0x and we hopped in. They said the water was 68 degrees, but I'm fairly certain it was closer to 62. Even the folks in wetsuits (I didn't wear mine..) were cold. I was FREEZING. But didn't have much time to think about it because 30 seconds after hopping in, we were off!

Sis and I met a woman in line who was scared about the swim. She had done the sprint distance before but still didn't like the water so much. So we stayed close to her before hand and pumped her up, which was fun. My sis and I (more me that her) don't look like your typical athletes, so I think she took comfort in use saying that if we could do it, she could do it too.

ANyway, it took me 1/2 mile to get warm, which sucked. Also, the wave starts were pretty close together and kind of organized strangely, so halfway through, lots of young men were swimming over me. I managed to keep my pace.. swimming freestyle mostly, and breaststroke when i choked on water or needed to sight the finish. Got to the end finally and was pulledout of the water. I was pretty dizzy and stumbled out, which was my first hint that my nutrition strategy was a big suckfest.

My swim hope: under 55 min. My time: 49:0x. (sorta. it's about a 1/4 mile from the swim out to the transition area and they don't clock your swim as being over until you get to transition. I was pretty much strolling, so my actual swim time includes my lolly-gagging. I feel like there should be a timing mat right at the swim out, but whatever...

So, at T1, I see the woman who was afraid of the swim and congratulated her! Apparently, my sis had left about 2 minutes before i arrived, so that was good. We chatted, ate, changed clothes, etc. My T1 was about 10 minutes i think. I shoveled in a powerbar, jelly beans, and some water, then was on my way.

The bike course at this race is tricky. Not technical or particularly hilly, but it's run entirely on Lake Shore Drive, which is a highway. We coccupied the 2 leftmost lanes in each direction and it was a 12 mile or so loop that we were to do twice. Problem is, there's no left shoulder and the right 2 lanes are open to traffic. So the race director says to everyone, if you have a bike issue, it's pretty much the end of the race for you. Now some people were pumping tires and changing tubes on the side, but I saw LOTS of people walking back with their bikes, looking disappointed.

About 2 miles in to my ride (I'm FLYING thanks to the skinny tires and light bike!) i go over a moderately deep crack in teh highway. My saddle rotates out of position (wasn't tight enough.. my fault. didn't re-check before leaving transition) and i was injured. Any more details are TMI. I hop off, tighten the saddle, hop back on, yelp in agony, then get moving. I spend the first loop with much of my weight on my pedals and handlebars, so my arms got tired pretty quickly. I wasn't steady enough to grab my water bottle while riding that way, so I wasn't hydrating at all and the sun was beating down.

I realized i couldn't make the whole distance that way, so i tried to sit but couldn't find a position that wasn't excruciating. made it about 2 miles into the second loop before i called it quits. It's hard because I wasn't going to die if I'd kept on, but it was agonizing. I rode back into transition, and waited for my sis.

When she rode in she knew something was up because we'd only seen each other once passing each other and i was in T2 much too early. So she started crying. I assured her i was ok and promised to see her at the finish.

So I ate a little more, ran a little (about 1.5 miles) just for the heck of it, then made my way to the end of the run. I spent about 30 min cheering people in and finally saw my sis about 1/4mile from the finish. She was walking, so i hopped onto the course and started telling her to move her ***. I cheered her on, ran with her for a bit, then let her kick it in alone the last 100m. She did great and shaved 15 min off her time from last year's race!

While she was wandering around a bit, i went back near the finish line and got to see our buddy from transition come in too.. she looked great and i'm so glad she made it through the whole thing!

So, all in all, it was a great day. I had fun, survived the cold water, beat my planned swim time, and was on course to come in under my planned bike time. I'm just annoyed that i DNFd during one of the 2 events i was most comfortable with. I fully expected any issues would be in the running segment. But even then, I figured i'd just walk, you know?

The lessons learned are: I need to train better (but i knew that before race day!), I need to nourish properly before longer races, and no more bike rentals. I rented on in last year's tri and i was miserable, but it was only for 8 miles, so i sucked it up. Not sure how serious I'll be in tri season next year, but if I decide to do out-of-town races, i need to get a road bike and a travel case and ride my own equipment that i know and am comfortable with.

Thanks for reading, and thanks for all the good luck wishes and support! It was fun!

Yay Jhi!! I am still so excited to hear about your race. You are my hero even though you didn't finish. Too bad about your rental bike. I think I would be the same about rental equipment.

Yay to Jhi and Michelle on their races this weekend!!

Yeah JHI - you are our TRI hero no matter what!! Just the swim portion would have done me in!! How are you feeling today??

I was able to watch the first half of the lunar eclipse on my run this morning. When I first stepped outside the clouds were covering the moon, but they quickly moved out of the way.

I've been running for 3 summers now, and this is the first time that I've finally crossed over the 100+ mile mark for any given month. 5 Miles for Brinkley and I today at a 9:38 pace. No animal sightings, but into our 4th mile we passed a house and smelled cooking Bacon! Mmmmm - that got the hunger pangs going early today.

Cheers!

Morning all ~~ Went rollar blading last night - 7 miles. DH figured out that I was going at about a 15 mph speed. don't know if that is fast or whatever but I felt it. This morning was a workout with Rontell. We did another circuit but this time with more weights - squats, lunges, pull ups, push ups, sits ups - you get the idea. I'm already sore so I can only imagine how I'm going to feel tonight at Belly Dancing.

Jhi I agree that you are our hero. I couldn't finish the swimming and the biking would not even happen - if you can bring your own bike you are right it would probably be better for you. When I worked at the tri a couple of weeks ago I was amazed at how many people were pulling their bikes out of their cars, vans etc and getting them ready for the race.

Mary couldn't see the eclipse this morning. Way too many clouds. Next time is Feb. You must feel incredible hitting 100 in a month. I'm very impressed. You and Brinkley are running maniacs.

ok, I have to go to court today - not fun, it is a bunch of wasted time sitting around waiting for who knows what. Anyway, I'll try to stop by later...

Re: a-WEIGH-we go!! August 27- September 2
Hey everyone!
Jhi Way to GO!!!! You did awesome. Most people would never even to attempt to do a triathalon....you flew lots of miles and did a great job. Bummer on the bike situation but hey that's how you learn right?
Jared I was EXHAUSTED after reading your post....my gosh you have a lot going on. I'll introduce myself...I'm a newly engaged 30 year old mom of two girls ages 11 and 7. I live in a tiny (pop. 600 or so) town in Minnesota about an hour south of St. Paul/Minneapolis.
Cherrie I'm so jealous on the rollarblading thing. I have put them on maybe twice in my life and felt like a big idiot. I didn't know what I was doing and I was so paranoid about falling down that I took them off. I need to practice with them on somewhere until I get the hang of it.
Mary Mowing lawn SO counts as cross training. Well if you used a push mower that is, lol. You didn't use the rider did you???
Ok...so I took your advice last night. I walked briskly for 5 minutes, felt fairly good and jogged two miles, then walked it out to 2.5 miles. I feel good today. Slightly stiff but nowhere near what it was. My plan is to tackle that route again on Thursday night. I'm going out of town for the long weekend up to my parents and hopefully will get two shorter runs in but I'm not sure. Let's see....other news here today. I've decided to look for another job. My hour commute one way each day is really wearing on me. I hate it and with winter coming I'm really getting nervous. That and the fact that this industry is so slow is just getting to be too much. I initially started at a title insurance company almost 10 years ago for what was supposed to be a summer internship and I'm still doing it and I'm sick of it. So I'm applying for a position at the Government Center ten minutes from home. Wish me luck!

Melanie Good luck in your job quest!!

Jared I should probably introduce myself as well. I live in Massachusetts. I'm 40, married w/ a 24 yr old DD. My DH and I have three dogs which are now our 'babies' since our DD is no longer living at home. When I'm focused and feeling good I tend to work out two times a day (3 or 4 days) and one time a day the other 2 or so. Giving myself one day of nothing. I've come to the conclusion that I'm primarily a spring/summer/fall runner cause I can't breath in the winter. Well, once the temps go below 40 or so I'm done.

Michelle I've been lazy too but I can feel it shaking off!!! You deserve a day here and there.

ok, BBL....

Michelle I had to look it up to make sure...I was a little off. Population is actually 875. Jason knows everybody in town but I'm a newbie there so I know a few people but I'm meeting them quickly! Closest town is probably Red Wing...their population is around 10-12 thousand I think. Rochester is about about 45 minutes south and they're a little bigger...famous for the health care there.

I am here.. Reading? have not worked out yesterday or today? eating has been great. No slacking there. I am getting super nervous about tomorrow and more or less wallowing in self pity about the whole being under for an hour and a half thing. I will be much better on my post on Friday? pain and all. I just want to wake up?.

Good luck on your job search Melanie! I can't imagine driving an hour each way to work! Takes me 10 minutes - tops!

SARAH - good luck tomorrow. I can imagine you are a bundle of nerves leading up to this surgery - but you will come out of it just fine! Be sure to write us on Friday, even a little blurb so we know you are okay.

Oh, and Melanie - it WAS a push mower!!

Re: a-WEIGH-we go!! August 27- September 2
Jhi - Congratulations on your attempt at a Tri!! Things happen sometimes. At least you know what to plan for the next time. I was training for a Duathlon about 2 years ago and decided to try and ride to work one morning. At the time, I only lived about 12 miles from work, but I have a huge Harbor Bridge between Portland and Corpus Christi, TX that you were not allowed to walk, run or ride across since 9/11. So, there was a way to go around the bridge by riding down an old road along the ports about 2 miles and crossing the lift bridge then ride 3 miles back into town. That's where the problem came in!! I was out on this old rode trucking away at about 25-30 mph when I heard the horn from the lift bridge that meant the bridge was either going up or coming down. I sat up on my bike and was trying to determine the position of the bridge when I hit a huuuuge pot hole that blew out BOTH of my tires on my road bike and threw me skidding along the road for about 20 feet. I still have a huge scar on my forearm where I left parts of myself on the road and picked up a couple of pieces of gravel. Luckily, I usually carry 2 spare tires with me and the road is rarely traveled, so after changing both of my tires I limped on to work and never tried that again.

Cherrie - I roller blade every once in awhile, but never stick with it long enough to get good or confident with it. I still have flashbacks of my first time on roller blades where I was doing great and having fun at my son's birthday party at the skating rink and then after taking a break I stood up and both of my skates took off from underneath me and I landed on my butt breaking my tailbone!!! I did not have fun for several weeks after that.

melaniemae427 - We do lead exhausting lives with 4 active kids!! That is why it is so imperative of me to get motivated and stick with a workout program so that I can keep up with them.

Luckily, today is a Rest day for me according to this new schedule.
Tomorrow I have to get up early again and then it's a 1 mile warmup, 3 mile Tempo Run & 1 mile cooldown.

Sarah You will be fine - I'll be thinking of you all day and looking forward to a note letting us know all went well.

Melanie That is still a really small town. I don't know how small our town is but my DH and his parents refer to houses by "oh the Smith's or whatever. They've lived here forever.
