Los Angeles, CA – 05/16/2013 – It seems like there is a different 5K run/walk every weekend to participate in. Every charity or group that needs to fundraise organizes one. Apparently running a 5K is the new “cool” thing to do.
Fueled by popular smartphone apps aimed at new runners, like the C25K apps- Couch to 5K and apps that simulate being chased by zombies, running can even seem fun. The Couch to 5K program has gained significant popularity with new runners, as it gives runners the guidance to runa 5K by the end of the 3 months- give or take some time depending on the runners ability level.
Some critics wonder if 5K’s are a fad. Or maybe not. With the obesity epidemic being at the forefront of a lot of discussions moreand more people may also just be trying to get healthier as well.
I would not agree with that statement. I live in Los Angeles and have been racing 5K's since 1986 in greater LA and in the San Francisco Bay Area. Granted, 30 years ago, 10K's were the more common middle distance, with some races offering an accompanying 5K. But 5K's have been around, and popular, for a long time, and they are not just for newbies.
Moreover, in a metropolitan area as large as Los Angeles, I'm not surprised that there are often several (or more) 5K races on any given weekend, particularly during good race weather in the spring and fall, and on special days like July 4th and Thanksgiving.
