I downloaded mapmyrun last week but it doesn't do enough for me. If more expericened I think it would be fine but I am trying to learn how to pace.
I am a sprinter who does occasional 5k's. Now I am working towards a marathon. My pacing is all jacked up. On a 10 mile run last week, my mile pace varied by as much as 3 minutes.
With the ap only telling me where I am after every mile, I do not realize I have gone too fast or slow until it is too late. Ideally I would like quarter mile updates or, even better, something that every 30-60 seconds would tell me if I was on whatever pace I have selected.
Is there such an ap out there?

A New Balance representative told me about Jogtunes app. They make it for both Iphone and Android phones. Also the Nike+ running app has the ability to give customized voice feedback. YOu can have it give it to you by distances as short as 1/4 mile and time wise as often as every minute. HTH

As SeeFluffyRun said Nike+ running app could help you. But I suggest you to have a look at Sensoria Fitness . It is a "smart sock" and will come with an app that will tell you real time: pace, stride lenght, cadence and other info such as where you are landing ( heel, midfoot, forefoot).

No that takes work! Go to a track and learn how to pace! repeats, repeats, repeats!
Pacing happened before apps.
Check out the runBSX app - it includes an assessment that determines your five running zones (pace based). Each run will give you real time feedback about your pace. The training plans are built on five zone training (again based on pace) and the phone will notify you when to move into the correct zone and when you slip out of your target zone/pace.

A good old HRM is what i find the best.
I have a polar and it really helps me out in keeping my pace down.
for a marathon or HM i believe that staying out of the 70%-80% HR zone is the best. But its hard to do.
It´s very dificult to keep the HR under 70% at long runs or recovery runs
And it really helps in mainting above the 85% on speed drills or hills for them to really help out.
It keeps all the guess work out of your training plan.
There is a free app for iphones called Fitnotix. It lets you create courses and track it using GPS. It gives you turn-by-turn navigation and after your first run on the course, it will give you pace updates through your headphones letting you know if you are behind, ahead, or on pace with your previous runs. It gives you updates at every mile marker too. I'm pretty sure it's free in the app store.
Oh and you can run music apps in the background. It just ducks the sound to quickly give you the updates. Hope this helps!
