Re: Really really nervous about race.

Just remember there will always be faster runners and slower runners - and the fact that you are already looking at results and worrying means you are quickly joining the running crazy running community - welcome - you'll fit in very well with us obsessed people.

The running community is incredibly supportive. Many of us hang out and cheer on the back of pack, because we were all there once before, and sometimes, i still am - depends on the day. You will do fine, and 35min is nothing to sneeze at.

Hey 5k is a huge accomplishment mbunny, you will rock it - and remember there is only ONE FIRST RACE. Enjoy every minute of it. You have done the work, so you know you will finish, just keep your head up, smile and enjoy yourself. Make sure when you cross that line, you hang around for a bit and cheer those that finishing after you.

Re: Really really nervous about race.

With the results you mentioned it does sound like a hardcore race!  I've run countless races and at my average 10 min/mile I am almost always smack dab in the middle of the pack.  I have never been anywhere near the back of the pack running a 30:00 5K.   I've been in 5K's where I saw lots of folks coming in at 45 minutes (some of them were walkers).

Who is putting on the race?   The few races I've run where my pace was in the bottom 25% were put on by track clubs and were popular qualifying races where times really count.   If I had a choice, I wouldn't pick one of those for a first time race.  There are lots of "fun run" type events this time of year that have runners of all abilities and are more newbie friendly.   It is possible, too, that you only saw the top finishers.  Maybe check on that again and see if you missed something.  Honestly, if it was me I wouldn't want to run a race where I came in dead last running at a respectable speed (if you're a walker you expect to come in at the back and you have other walkers with you so that is different.)  Hope it works out for you, let us know!

Oh my gosh!   I really really love the "chased by the cops" picture!   That is too funny!

In my state, the high school cross country members are not allowed to run in promotional races during their season.  My son is a cross country runner, and he would have been disqualified from participating in the sectionals if he would have ran my race with me.  The weird thing?  If he was on the track team and the race was during the spring, he could have ran!     Doesn't make sense to me!

Be proud!!  You ran your first race!  I ran my first race on the very same day.  I was nervous, too.  But I really loved it.  You don't race against other runners.  You race against yourself.  Good job and CONGRATULATIONS!!!

Way to go, mbunny, on finishing your first race!  Love your pictures - you're a cutie!

I finished my first 10k in 25 years on the same day as you did your 5k.  Averaged 12:33 per mile and figured that was pretty good for a chubby 58-year old.

I kind of did it backwards, but I'll be challenging myself in the 5k on October 30th, hoping to finish in 36 min. or so.

    Really really nervous about race.

Just remember to have fun.  I know others say this but try your best to have fun and just let the results take care of themselves.

What works for me is remembering all of the runs that I already did and how prepared they made me.  YOU should do the same.
