This is a pilot survey that is attempting to understand why we run marathons and I would appreciate your input. (I had originally posted this under the "General Discussion" section).
I'm hoping for responses from previous marathoners as well as from folks that haven't run one before but are thinking about it. The numbers of people that are signing up for marathons is growing every year and my mission is to try to understand why. For the record, I have no affiliation with any event organizers, running organizations, manufacturers or retailers in the running industry. I am just a runner with an interest in why things are what they are.

Kelly1066: <laughing> There are likely 1000's of excellent reasons NOT to run a marathon, which why I wanted to try to find out why we do run them. It is a daunting distance, requiring the investment in time for training and a level of mental persuasiveness.
I've learned that in the 1980's the average marathon time was somewhere around 3hr 30min, and today the average hovers around 4hr 30min. This apparently is due to the large influx of "everyday" runners that are jumping into the challenge of running the distance vs those, probably more athletic and better conditioned, runners of the past whose sole goal was really to run as fast as possible for the entire distance. Nowadays, I suspect that many runners goals is simply to survive the distance, regardless of style or speed. Again, that was part of my reason for doing the survey - I am hoping to see the difference between the core (fast) runners that are the sub 4hr finishers and the rest of us (me included) that take longer than 4hrs to cross the finish line.
BTW - I saw your blog - nice! As a male (and with kids that have now left the nest), I totally cannot imagine jogging with a stroller. I see moms out there running with their kids and all I can think of is the extra workout that they are getting. That is dedication. Keep it up. (Side note: sometimes I see dad's doing it, but more often moms....)
