Running with Poop

This one is for people who run with their dogs.

I recently adopted a dog and am working to get his endurance up - right now I take him on my warm up lap around the block.

Something has been frustrating me.... he always manages to poop after we've left our yard and we're too far to quickly turn back. Then I'm stuck running with a bag of poop in my hand which is less than ideal.

I can't adjust the schedule.... he eats, then we run about 10 min later.

Any ideas, tricks or cool devices out there to help? (I guess I'm thinking something to store the poop in so that I don't smell it while I run)

Would it be conveinent for you to go to a local park to run? The park nearest my house has these little poop stations with plastic baggies and a drop.... thing, so you could take care of it right there. You'd have to stop running for a short period, but it would just be one step. I've seen several parks that have these.

Re: Running with Poop
If you run in the early morning, leave the poop there. When you are finished running return to pick up said poop.

Re: Running with Poop
I suppose you could try taking along a plastic bag for the poop, and pre-fill the bag with some baking soda before you leave home. The baking soda will act as a deodorizer and also as a dessicant, both of which should help with the smell. Just be aware that you'll be running around with a baggie filled with a white powdery substance... maybe not the best idea.

I use "Mutt Mitts" from PetSmart ($21.00 for 100) and once it is tied up I put it inside a plastic shopping bag and tie it off again. The Mutt Mitts are expensive but they are double thick where your hand goes and they claim to be degradable.

I also feed my dog after we run but he still poops everytime we go out anyway.

Dogs are the BEST workout partner!

Re: Running with Poop
Wow, glad to hear I am not the only one who has this problem.

My hubby and I both run with our dogs together, and I agree, they are great to run with!
Hubby is faster and is pretty much ahead of me, and he's a real "peach" and leaves Doggie droppings #1 for me to pick up in addition to Doggie #2 (my partner).
By the time I get home I am usually slugging 2-3 lovely bags of poop. It's challenging to balance the leash with swaying little treasure bags.
I think next time I am going to make him clean up after his own dog!

Re: Running with Poop
Is your running route a loop? Could you bag it up, leave it there and pick it up on the way back?

Re: Running with Poop
I do what Kat suggests. I pick up the poop, put it in a baggie, and anchor the bag to something along the route. Then I pick it up on my way back.

Re: Running with Poop
I usually run with the poop tied in a bag to the leash. Somewhere on my route, I usually pass a garbage can of some sort and drop it in. If not, I just leave it and go on my way.

My dog, whether I take her for a walk or a run, always poops within a few minutes of leaving the house. So, if I?m taking her on a run?so that I don?t have to stop and wait on her to do her business?I take her out and walk her BEFORE the run begins. It?s usually enough to get her to poop.

Re: Running with Poop
You could try giving him a cup of coffee about 10 minutes before you run. Especially if it is an AM run. ((( sorry, couldn't resist )))

Ahhhh yeeesss......my 'loop' has several trash cans along the way - I made sure of that beforehand........also, the first 10 mins or so of our 'warmup' is for her to get her business done enrt 1st said trash can! mini purelle bottle fits in my doo-dad waist pack.....Then we may run! Long runs sometimes require two stops w/2nd being pretty minor.......she also does not have breakfast until after we get back........neither one of us likes to "purge" on the trail!

They actually sell vests with pockets that your dog can wear. You could get him one of those and make him carry HIS OWN poop!
I've always thought this would be shear humiliation for our dog... but she'd probably go along with it.

Re: Running with Poop
Mine does the same thing. Luckily we are near a closed store with a trash barrel out front.

You should not feed your dog before running, it's bad for their stomach. And, if it is a strenuous run, wait about 1/2 hr after before feeding too.
