40's on the run - are you ready for some football? edition

Okay, I'm not the best person to be starting the thread this week, since I've been incommunicado so much lately.

But I had a moment to check in and, well, here ya go.

I ran a slow 5 miles this morning, which gives me fifteen on the week just ended, not too bad. Almost back into my routine of getting up in the morning, almost.

We watched the Aggie game yesterday, which wasn't easy, since they about gave the game away.

Hope everyone is well, I am so ready for cooler weather.

Bear, you and I started a new thread within seconds of eachother. Cool. I deleted mine and pasted my post below. I'm ready for the cooler weather too...just not cold!!

This Tuesday marks the 6th anniversary of 9/11/01...something to think about as we enjoy the freedom to run and ride and walk about this great country of ours.

Today was a rest day for me. I put my weekly training schedule together this evening, and realized I'm going to have to go back to running early in the morning once a week to get in my long runs, b/c I'm just not fast enought to fit a 7 or 8 mile run into a 60-minute lunch break. This'll probably be the week that starts.

I picked up the entry form to our local school & community foundation's fundraiser, an out-and-back 5K on Saturday October 20, just 6 weeks away. I won't really be ready to race by then but it's a fun race and I hope my wife and one, two, or three of the kids will do it with me.

Wow, Bri -- it's hard to believe that it has been 6 years. Yes, we should be thankful for having the liberties we do have. Thanks for reminding us.

I also have been trying to plan my runs with the time changing ever so slightly each morning. It is staying darker later and I still need to run before work as it is still too hot to run after work. Since this is my first year running (actually, I am just at the end of my first year!) I haven't discovered how to make all the transitions yet. When the weather cools off enough then I will prefer to run in the afternoons. Probably soon.

Happy running everyone!

~Shell

PS -- I tried to post to the thread that you deleted, Brian. When I tried to figure out why it wouldn't post I realized you had deleted --

Hi All - My day off, so pretty much just checking in. Had a bunch of people over here today for NFL with 2 little tykes. Not used to have toddlers running around, so it's been interesting.

Tomorrow - Hill Tempos. I hate those things - they kick my rear.

Have a great week!

Hello everyone! Yes, thank you for reminding us of this great country in which we live...I am truly grateful for the ability to get out and run, and the freedom which allows me to do it.

I'm starting a new leaf today. Last week was terrible. Was sick all week and didn't run. Tried to run Sat and only able to go 2 miles. Was very disappointed until I realized this is a lifelong sport and don't get too discouraged at a few bad runs. Thanks for the support last week as I am feeling much better today.

Everyone have a great week!

Silly Bear -- thanks for starting the thread. Now chant with me "cool front, cool front, cool front....." Cooler weather has just gotta get here. Although the summer hasn't been as hot as some here in Texas, I can't remember the humidity being this high for this long.

BTY -- you are so right re: the freedoms we have here. Says a lot for this great country of ours that we can hardly imagine what life would be like otherwise. Brings to mind the chorus from one of the songs we sang in church this weekend. It begins "I am free to run".

Leslie -- have fun with those hills tomorrow! Was supposed to do hills this morning, but we're having some pretty serious thunderstorms.

Shell -- won't it be nice just to have options of running at different times of the day? Congrats on your first year of running. You've come a long way!

Tamara -- I really liked what you said..."Was very disappointed until I realized this is a lifelong sport and don't get too discouraged at a few bad runs." Glad you are feeling better!

At times I'm afraid that if I have a string of bad runs or miss a few, I will lose ALL the fitness I've gained. But I had lousy runs and missed more than ever on the training schedule last week, and then had a really good 8 miler on Saturday (my longest run to date). So I know the fear is irrational, which makes it a phobia..."suckyrunaphobia" maybe? If I'm worried about something as silly as that, I have a LOT to thank God for!

Anyone hear from Oxfordmom? Still missing her.

Have a great week 40's!

Hi All !!
Hope everyone had a great weekend.

Brian- so right you are about the freedoms we have ,and often take for granted. 9/11 hits home pretty hard around here as I often work in NYC( was in the south tower the Fri before 9/11)

Had a nice weekend of running.Friday was 5 easy miles,Sunday's long run was 9 miles in the trails again. Can't get enough of those trails but with hunting season starting, I will have to limit myself to Sundays only.

Happy Runs

Joe

River Run HM RR:
What an awesome race and PRed (BIG) as well.

Got up at 5AM to rain. That could be good and it could be bad. It turned out to be good. Friend showed up at 6AM and the three of us (me, boyfriend and other friend) took off for the shuttle bus. It was a point to point race. We met our other friend at the bus. It was the first HM for two of them so there was a lot of excitement in the air. I was offering encouragement and strategies to them.

Got to the start line at about 7:15. It wasn't raining at this point but you could tell it was going to. It had been raining on and off all night. The gun went off at 8 and we took off. I wanted to run with the 2:10 pace group, but they didn't have pacers this year. With the heavy cloud cover my Garmin wouldn't work (201) so I was on my own. All 4 of us ran together at the crowded start. As it thinned out, our slower friend faded back. Me and my one friend ran together for about 5 miles while my boyfriend fartlecked back and forth (Can't figure out how he can do that). My other friend faded as his longest run had only been 5 miles. Soon my boyfriend and I were running together. It was raining for most of the first 8 miles. It was quite warm and humid so the rain was probably a good thing as it can be a brutally hot course if the sun is blazing.

I was staying just under 10 minute miles til 9 or 10 miles (I was shocked). At 9.5 I hit the hill that I've never been able, in two other attempts, to run the entire distance up. I DID IT!!! But it tooks it's toll. By 10 I was struggling a bit. I walked a couple of times. I knew I'd PR no matter what at this point but I wanted a to finish strong. By mile 11 I just wanted to be done. So, I tucked my head, got on the yellow line and locked myself into a doable pace so that I could run the rest of the way in. My legs had been somewhat stiff the entire race because of the rain. When I walked it made matters worse so I knew I HAD to keep running. Well, I did.

My previous PR was 2:32:35 (last May). I was going for 2:20, my dream was 2:10 but I thought a 2:15 was pretty likely. I finished in 2:16:15!!!! I was over a minute faster than my last PR!!!!

If I hadn't run that 5K the day before (ran slowish and still got 2nd in my age group) and wore heels to dinner, I may have done a bit better, but I really don't care. I have another HM in 4 weeks, I can PR again. It will be much tougher then, though. So, I'll still be reporting here.

Didn't run this morning, might do a couple miles later if I have time. Will try to get out and run a bit tomorrow. Am taking it somewhat easy this week, but then back to the grind as the next HM is aproaching quickly.

Am I nuts????????

Re: 40's on the run - are you ready for some football? edition
I did a light 3.1 on wednesday and another marathon sedation dental appointment friday so will be off until I can back off the ibuprofen, probably wednesday then I have a 5k saturday. Just a fun run thing and if I don't pr then so be it.

Congrats on the new pr distanc lr Carol!! I can't say enough for running base, the more weeks months years it seems we run the more "carry thru " we get on off periods.
Cooling off here and hopefully for all you other runners. The best time of the year running weather wise here.
Have a good one folks, or rather have a good run folks.

Re: 40's on the run - are you ready for some football? edition
Great job, Gale! Congratulations! With the struggles you'ved pulled yourself through - you are a constant inspiration to me.

Tamara - Thank you for the reminder that this is a life-long sport, and that a few days or weeks of crummy runs is nothin' compared to 20-30 years of doing what we have found we love. I was sort of beating myself up for not getting out there and doing the hill tempos this morning. I needed that reminder. . . . . . so why didn't I do the hill tempos? Lousy, lousy night of sleep. Most defnitely needed the extra ZZZZZ's.

r2farm - When're you going to be through with all that dental work?? Have they dedicated a parking place to you yet? That's what I keep telling my vet, since I've generously given them HUGE sums of money over the past 6 years or so.

Did you see where the moderator said he/she deleted 135 advertisements this morning??? Geez!!!

I am very thankful for the freedom I have because I am an American, and I thank God that we have strong people willing to fight for that freedom for me.

Re: 40's on the run - are you ready for some football? edition
Hi 40's. I skipped the bike ride today so that I could get home in time to watch my son play in his first home JV Football games as a starter. He played the whole game on Defense as Inside Linebacker, and platooned with another boy at Fullback on Offense, running the plays in to the QB. They lost handily, but he again had a fumble recovery and was in on a lot of tackles, all over the field. I only saw him run the ball once on "O", for no gain, as I think he was pretty tired by that point.

I ran 6 miles today in ~ 54:00 for just about an even 9:00 mile pace. I peppered the end of the run with 6 100m striders at 1/4 mile intervals, and I can tell that doing these is helping me to regain form on the main portion of my subsequent runs. I'm no longer running like the Tin Man looking for a can of oil.

I felt like maybe it's time to have a run where I'm a little out of my comfort zone for 5 or 6 minutes. I don't want to push it though.

Re: 40's on the run - are you ready for some football? edition
Clear and a very cool 42 degrees here this morning in the Great American Desert of western Nebraska but it didn't help my run. Sucky run today. I did 3.1 and walked a couple hundred yards of it. Mostly a holdover from my sedation dental appointment I think and a little too much coffee. I did manage to run the last half mile at a normal pace. My race Sat has me a little worried. I might go for a little run thurs and if I am not recovered I might just go be dw's cheering section only.
Leslie I think my dentist's kids college tuition is due. One more big appointment then some little followup stuff. I joke about it but I am really thrilled with the results and it will all be worth it in the end.

Gale great job on your race!!

Hang in there Tamora you have the right attitude. When I get discouraged I go reread one of Long Run NIck's posts on lifetime running.
Hey Joe ya got any Hunter Orange running gear ;-) just teasin'

BTY lol at the image of the tinman without the oil can, thats exactly what I look like!! . Fun stuff watching your son playing football. My nephew is a second yr head coach at a small local HS and we have been going to their games.

Thanks, fatozzig. Yeah, I've been through a lot and have overcome a lot. Going on 10 months sober now!!! I'm running better than I EVER thought possible!!!

Didn't run yesterday or today. Taking a little break from the HM. Thought about running today but since I'm working a double shift, decided to run tomorrow. Gotta get back out there. Next HM is less than 4 weeks away, now!!!

Have a great day, all!!!!
