Toying with idea of Triathlon

I've been running almost 4 years and have always been pretty active. I swam competitively as a kid and through college and a couple years of Masters after graduation. That was years ago, but I've recently started swimming some laps at the gym just because a pool is available and I've always loved swimming. I have a bike but mainly ride just as a recreational activity or to get from point A to point B... have never raced.

So, my question is this... how hard is it to swim in a triathlon when it's not a pool?! I'm not that fond of open water other than flopping around at the beach just for fun. I can't imagine trying to swim in a tri without the benefit of lanes and getting yardage off turns. Should I even be thinking about a tri?

Any advice? Thanks.
Carrie

Carrie,
You used to go on the HM thread, right?
I'm also preparing for my first Tri and swimming is my main concern. Never seriously swam in open waters, but I plan to try it before the race.
This shouldn't stop you either. You'll get through it, there will be plenty of people around and anyway, the swim will be 15-20 minutes, then it's over and you can focus on the rest!

Re: Toying with idea of Triathlon
Lets see... You're active, you've been running for 4 years and you love to swim. I'd say you're already way ahead of the learning curve. There is no reason for you not to think about a triathlon.

I wasn't a swimmer at all when I decided to take up the sport. In fact I was like a cat - I hated the water.

I would suggest taking a Triathlon Class in your area. Talk to people who have done them and even volunteer or observe one before you do it youself.

The swimming can be intimidating but there are ways around that. Simply avoid the mass of people and find your own space at the start. As you do more you'll get more comfortable swimming in crowds.

No one here is going to tell you, you shouldn't be thinking about a tri. Get out there a do it. And when you do, you'll realize just how much fun you've been missing.

Re: Toying with idea of Triathlon
Hmmm......great swimmer, in good shape, great runner, ride bike for fun, just NOW thinking of doing a Tri? My only question is:

What took so long??????

Sign up for a sprint. You'll fall in love and cross over to the dark side.

Don't worry about the swim.....I am not big on swimming in lakes as I am a little freaked over what is in the water below....but once you are in the water, the adrenaline takes over and you are so focused you have no time to worry.....it's great fun, really!

CoCarrie, you're in Denver right? You might try coming over to Boulder for one or two of the Stroke and Stride races (http://www.racingunderground.com/strokestride/index.html)I haven't one one personally, but I have heard they are very beginner friendly.

Carrie:

The Danskin in MA was my first last year...I highly recommend it.....it is soooo welcoming to newbies and the atmosphere is so much fun and supportive...you'll hear people yelling "Strong women, go!" ....all sorts of shout outs, it was a great time.

I did it with my 2 sister in laws and we are all doing it again...kind of a girls thing.....

Re: Toying with idea of Triathlon
Go girl! If I can do this (we shall see...), so can you.

So, like, I had plantar fasciitis and started swimming because I couldn't run. I can't even do flip turns -- I just swim, that's all, pokey slow.

I drive to a nearby town to watch a sprint tri -- 500y swim, 12 mile bike ride, 5K run. What did I see? People like me, not even doing flip turns, hanging on to the end of the pool gasping for breath at the end of a lap, big people, skinny people, young and old....all having a goofy good time.

And I thought "heh. I could do this." So I went home and signed up for a sprint tri in 2 weeks (no, er, that's 10 days). On zero bike training. I'll ride my mountain bike -- no clippy pedals or anything. I ordered a trisuit in the mail (hey, if I'm slow, at least I can have fast transitions!). I'm ready, baby!

Sorry to go on & on. Main message is...why not?! Go, have fun!

This is so cool ... sharing the excitement of a first tri ... AMAZING, isn't it?

Go for it - you will love it! Good luck!

And cocarrie, I also want to apologize because my reply was off topic -- you really wanted to know about open water swimming.

gosh -- can't help you there. I have yet to try it. I designate you in charge of open water reconnaissance to inform the rest of us, OK?

Cheers! (My trisuit should be here in 3-4 days; hope it fits...)

The one I am thinking about is the Danskin Women's Tri because I understand that it is very beginner friendly and supposedly not too intimidating. My goal would be just to do it for fun - to finish.. because it's getting to be tennis season and that's really my main big thing. I still will run in the mornings and get in a few gym sessions a week where I can swim but I don't see myself getting too serious about it since I'm pretty slow to begin with. Just thinking it might be something new and fun to try. Thanks again for the encouragement!

Danskin is a good beginner friendly tri as is Tri for the Cure in August. Just make sure you get some open water swims in before the race. Boulder res and Chatfield are good places to train. Good luck!

Re: Toying with idea of Triathlon
Econo,

If you don't ride your mountain bike on dirt trails much, you may want to have the local bike shop put smooth/ slick tires on your bike rather than race with knobby tires.

You will go a couple miles an hour faster and have better traction on roads than if you use knobby tires.

Have a great time and welcome to the Dark Side.

Re: Toying with idea of Triathlon
Hey Carrie,

I say go for it. I just finished my 1st Tri about two weeks ago and I haven't done anything but think about my next one since.

I don't have a swimming background at all, in fact I just started swimming six months ago. Like you, I was intimidated by the thought of an open water swim. I got myself a wetsuit and tested the open water a few times before the race and I was relieved to find that it wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it was going to be.

The race it's self was absolute madness at the start and even though I had heard stories, I wasn't quite prepared for the chaos. The good thing was that within a few minutes, every thing settled down and I was able to get into a decent rhythm.

With your swimming background I would think you would do great in the water. .

Good Luck!

Re: Toying with idea of Triathlon
Cash, I don't want to sink the money into buying slick tires (will probably buy a road bike this summer) -- and the tri I entered has a mountain bike division, so....yes, I'll be slow....

Here's a stupid question -- if it rains, do the knobby tires help me a bit?
