My bike water bottle

Here is a silly dilema. I have a hard time getting my water bottle out cause the pump is in the way. Where does everyone mount their pumps?

in my "to be sold" bin. Seriously, hand pumps are a pain IMHO. Get a CO2 dealy. Cheap and small.

I'll go ahead and hop on the CO2 inflater bandwagon.

Me too.

I would make a bet that if you flatted you wouldn't even be able to blow up the tire with the hand pump.

Re: My bike water bottle
If you buy the inflator with the "threadless" style cartfidge, you can buy the replacements very cheaply at any discount store that sells supplies for BB guns, i.e. walmart.

With some full size frame pumps, you can fit then along your left seatstay, with one end at the dropout and the other kind of wedged in the space near your seat where the two seatstays come together. On many frames, if you buy the right size frame pump it fits very well in that spot and stays out of your way. Sometimes the pubp rubs on the tire though, so you'd have to try it at the shop first.

Sounds like you may like the co2's, make sure to understand how to puncture the metal seal on the cartridge before, I don't generally puncture them until I need to blow up the tire, they tend to leak out over time, You can stuff a couple spare carts in your seatbag. You can mount the inflator on your seatube, don't buy some gargantuan bag for under your seat.

Usually, I like to ride in a jersey with back pockets, so I stuff the flat tire and empty inflator in my pockets, then keep the spares in the garage so I can re-stock when I'm done with the ride, it's easy to forget and not have the proper supplies when you need them the next time.

Keep the pump at home. Really, get a CO2 inflater. Much like clipless pedals, once you make the switch, you won't go back.

Re: My bike water bottle
I just got a CO2 inflator last year. I was hesitant to get one because I've read so many RR where people have incorrectly used the cartridges and they ran out without pumping up their tires. Then, their races are over or they're stuck in the middle of nowhere. I got an inflator that has a hand pump in it as well. I realize I won't be able to get the pressure up very high with the hand pump, but at least I can pump it enough to get me to the next aide station or get back to my car if I'm training. The whole thing fits in my under-the-seat bag thingie. Definitely worth the money.

Re: My bike water bottle
You are correct that you only get that one blast of air, so you need to make sure the thing is on correctly. When I use mine for mtb races I make sure to have a bunch of cartridges shoved in my seat bag for this reason.

I used to feel the frame pump was good for whacking dogs, but after breaking a couple tend to find just using my hand works OK.

I still use a frame pump, but I'm kind of a throwback. I suspect the co2's will get your tire harder also. You still need to have your nice Silca floor pump at home.

I'm w/ everyone else. CO2 inflator and a few extra cartridges in my seat bag for the tri bike. Floor pump at home. Frame pump on my hybrid.

Re: My bike water bottle
Cost is a huge issue and the pump will have to due...

Can you mount the inflator to the back side of the seat tube? Or to the side of the front triangle? I know a few guys that put it in the back pocket of their jerseys.

Re: My bike water bottle
I have a small hand-pump attached by velcro under my top tube, but since I've never had a flat yet (knock on wood) while out on a ride, I don't even know if this would get my tires up to the right pressure. I put it my pump there since I have water bottle cages on my seat tube and also on my the lower tube.

Hijack I'd thought about switching to CO2 as well but haven't a clue how this works, and which inflator to buy .. Any recommendations?

Sally

Re: My bike water bottle
i use the inexpensive superflate that takes the threadless type cartidges (bb guns use them, crossman is a common brand). When you have a flat, you screw have to screw the 2 halves of the unit togther firmly to puncture the top of the co2 cart, loosen the valve on your presta valve on your tire, put the end of the inflator all the way over the valve, hold firmly and push the lever. The tire blows right up if you do it right. Carry extra carts in case you botch it. One cart for a road wheel, usually two for an mtb.
