I saw another post here about using running to help stop smoking.
It reminded me that I'm (in part) using running as a way to get my lazy butt away from the computer and live life!
I work as an implementation consultant for a computer software company, so I already spend a large part of my day sitting in front of a computer.
But for most of my life, I've also been heavily addicted to computer games. For me, it goes way back to the early ones. I remember paying a quarter to play Pong at the arcade. I also had the home version (we're talking pre Atari 2600 here). It didn't have cartridges... it just played Pong.
I went on to Intellivision, Nintendo, XBOX, Playstation. And most of all.... computers. First person shooters, MMORPG (Everquest, World of Warcraft, etc.), and even Second Life. I have played so many of them.
The massive multiplayer games are the worst. I was spending 8+ hours a day working in front of a computer, and the next 8+ hours a day in a group, or a raid, or whatever.
I've spent years and years of my life sitting in front of a screen. And of course, while sitting in front of the screen, I consumed all kinds of crappy food because it was cheap, fast and easy.
I have finally decided that I have had enough. I have permanently "gone AFK". I'm tired of living my life virtually, instead of in reality.
So... who else is also running as a way of getting away from "living virtually"? Let's use this forum to challenge each other!

Recent research is showing that the inactivity is really bad for your health, no matter what your fitness level is. Sitting all day at work, then spending hours watching TV or at a video game is a recipe for physiological disaster.
Making matters worse, the influences in our lives that incline us to be glued to a glowing screen are doing it for their own financial gain.
Declare independence and get out there in real life and go running.
I am currently working to overcome this habit as I get finished with work and sit down in front of the PS3, computer, iPad, or something and game. If I don't do that then I sit and watch TV marathons or something. The History Channel is great for my brain, but not for my body. I am starting C25K today after work so hopefully I will beat the temptation to sit after work.
@DaveVause - I love your idea of declaring independence. I need to get back to "real life" and doing things in a non-virtual world.
