Ice Baths

Can someone please explain exactally how to do this and when to do it?

My weekends are getting longer. 2 1/2 hour bike followed by 30 minute bricks, and then the next day 1:45 run. My legs are constantly "heavy". Nothing painful by any means, just heavy, tired, if that explains it right. Then just when it starts to feel less so, it's midweek and time for speed work. Would the icebaths help?

Kristine:

I used ice baths last year while training for Philadelphia. After my long runs, I would take about six frozen bottles of water and climb into the tub with them with my shorts on, turn on the cold water only, and grin and bear it. I let the water fill just until it covered my knees and would sit for 10-15 minutes. I found this was much easier than filling the tub and jumping in once filled. It is really not as bad as you may think. I had very little soreness after my long runs and seemed to recover much quicker than without the ice baths. Good luck.

Re: Ice Baths
Use 'em. Love/hate 'em.

Amazing for recovery, especially if followed by a hot shower (it flushes everything out).

I buy bags of ice from the grocery store, and just keep the bag in the freezer. I empty about a quarter of a bag into the tub, turn on the water to cold, and let it fill. I usually wear a sweatshirt or something, and just let my legs sit in the water for 10 minutes. It's awful for the first minute until everything goes numb, but after that it's fine

Re: Ice Baths
The Newbie Wiki link says that ice baths should be done immediately after the long run for maximum effectiveness. Are they still effective if done a few hours later?
