RR: Race for the Place 5K

Short Version
Time: 30:08.05
AG: 30/50
Overall: 462/???

Not as short Version...

First, this race is for a great cause (fundraiser for a safe house on campus that helps MANY students, staff, faculty, etc.). Second, the course is terrible (mostly sidewalks). Third, it is always the hottest day of the year to date...yesterday was not exception topping out at 83*.

Thanks to a 1pm start time, the sun was in all of its glory and the temperature was 83, sorry I already mentioned that...but it bares repeating! I was not properly fueled and though I worked hard on hydration I failed miserably and knew I was in trouble at the mile mark. Thank goodness for the water station around mile 2...yes, I admit I got water in a 5K.

My sister and BIL ran the race, he did it on a whim and I can say that I have now beaten him in a race. His redemption will most likely come later in the summer at the CRIM which the 3 of us will be running for the 3rd straight year. Hopefully, this year we can convince my DH to join in the 'fun.'

Anyway, thanks to some sickies last week and a sore knee before that I haven't done a long run in a couple of weeks and speedwork/tempo, uh not so much. I got what I trained for

All in all, I'm okay with the day-it's a starting point and it's a good wake up call for me...I have been in denial.

That said, I have a HM on Sunday (which yes, I really did do a long run of 11 miles a couple weeks back so I am kind of ready!). My goals for that remain what I had before my 'showing' yesterday. Finish, finish upright, in less than 3 hours...just putting in the miles and working on my mental training. I have bigger fish to fry this summer and this is just one piece of the puzzle.

83? Ick. My parents weren't kidding when they told me it was in the 80s in MI yesterday. A good learning experience to get ready for the HM and this summer's bigger fish.

Sounds like you had a good time, that's the important part. Great job! Now go easy this week, no sense hurting yourself before Sunday's race.

Great job, Alicia! That heat really sucks...why oh why would they start a race at 1 pm???

I always get a drink during a 5K. Hopefully it will be a little cooler for your HM on Sunday! Taper, girl, taper!
