Max/Target Heart Rate

I'm a 22 year old male with a resting heart rate of about 66 bpm. According to various formulas that I've found, I am supposed to keep my heart rate under 181 bpm because that is about 90% of my max heart rate. I looked this information up because I noticed that during my workouts my heart rate was around 190-192 bpm, which seemed pretty high. However, when I keep my heart rate in the 175-180 range, I don't feel like I'm getting a vigorous workout; it just seems relaxing. How much faith should I put into these formulas that base my target heart rate on just my age, sex, and resting heart rate?

Thanks much.

Re: Max/Target Heart Rate
formulas are rough guess. field tests are specific for you and where you are with your training becuase your fitness level changes the more you train. here's a link to rich strauss site he use lactate threshold instead of max HR but same general idea:
http://www.cruciblefitness.com/etips/training-zones.htm

you don't think you're exerting yourself but what is the purpose of the workout? if it's endurance base building stuff you should be able to talk and workout at the same time. if it's speedwork (anaerobic) then it's short hard intensity stuff.

Re: Max/Target Heart Rate
I agree; good link. I usually run at about 180 bpm for the last two miles or so, but this seems to be okay, according to the articles. And i thought i was the only one having this kinda fun!!!
