Friday, April 27 - Rogers Hornsby

On this day in 1896, baseball Hall of Famer Rogers Hornsby was born in Winters, Texas. (nytimes.com)

Flagged down The Diesel for an 8 mile romp in the rain this morning. Picked up Iron Boy 10 minutes later and then the Yull-log. Chilly rain - 44F. We held 8:45's and talked a lot. Got wet.

A sure sign of spring near the end of the run - I saw worms on the pavement!

Swing for the fences tri-peeps!

On this day in
1994 : South Africa holds first multiracial elections

More than 22 million South Africans turn out to cast ballots in the country's first multiracial parliamentary elections. An overwhelming majority chose anti-apartheid leader Nelson Mandela to head a new coalition government that included his African National Congress Party, former President F.W. de Klerk's National Party, and Zulu leader Mangosuthu Buthelezi's Inkatha Freedom Party. In May, Mandela was inaugurated as president, becoming South Africa's first black head of state.

Sorry John thought I would add another one

Running for me today an active recovery day so 35 mins at a nice pace cross country with beautiful sunshine (Sorry again John)

Absolute beautiful weather here. Pool was closed last night by the time I got home, so have to try and make it up tonight.

Up early to take GF to airport, then hit the bike for an extended commute. Added about 20 minutes to my normal ride just for kicks. Will head straight home after work to try and catch the pol open.

Neil, GF was in South Africa last week. Says they still have a long way to go.

Re: Friday, April 27 - Rogers Hornsby
No workout this morning due to my race this weekend, so I slept late and got up at 5:00. Figured it would be best to take out my tempo run and ride along with my swim TT since the race would take care of those. I forgot how good it feels to sleep in.

I will however have a 2:30 long ride this afternoon, which I plan on taking fairly easy.

Happy Friday and great workouts to all!!!!!

Re: Friday, April 27 - Rogers Hornsby
One hour functional strength class this morning. First, one of the guys that I just barely know came in late and walked up to congratulate me on Boston and shake my hand when I'm in the middle of a set. Then, after I nearly fall on my arse doing squats, the instructor (who is also my coach) announces to the class that I had run a 2:58 at Boston, which led to a lot of cheers and a bit of redness on my part. But its all good.

Tonight, 1 hr easy spin on the bike.

Looked at my summer schedule for the first time last night and determined there is no freaking way I can do everything I want to. I can't sail two days every weekend and still fit a real triathlon training program in. I can probably make it work this year by not giving what I'm used to either effort, but if I'm even going to think about IMWI in 2008, something is going to have to give. Kinda bummed right now.

Mike - It's only a year. Do your tri training, get the IM under your belt, then scale back to allow your other loves to be a part of your life again.

Me - Rest Day!! Felt super strong yesterday, it was great. Hoping a day off will have me really hammering the workouts this weekend. We'll see.

Re: Friday, April 27 - Rogers Hornsby
Mike - IMOO - compete or complete? Makes a huge difference in time commitment.

Me, 5mile run 63min. Aerboic test. Managed to keep my tree trunks moving, was finally warm and nothing complaining at ummm.. about 4.5m. Dangit. shin didn't hurt, so that's some consolation. too bad I just had a rotating set of weird pains. Calf cramp... then moved to outside ankle... then other leg calf... then quad.... nothing too bad. Tweaked my left knee in a weird way after a walk break to drink. That was weird. Not only in that I wasn't really doing much (it was walking->running but very slow must have been a weird angle) but also that knee is known as Mr invincible. Never have issues..

So I'm sitting here with an ice pack on it "just in case" and ibuprofen on board and the who routine. Weird thing it felt fine while running, hurt a tiny bit while walking.

1600/1mi swim - 31 mins. Watched DVD in morning pre-work, trying to get a few pointers ... It LOOKS so easy - Think it's the breathing every stroke cycle that messes me up - so have to work on rolling to left.

Re: Friday, April 27 - Rogers Hornsby
Very much a blah day here in New England. Started with rain, continued to rain, and, guess what, it's still raining. Blah.

LRR: Was Rogers related to Bruce, the singer? And wasn't Bruce the guy who was blind? Nice to have company on this rainy morning!

x, Sparty: Good luck this w/e!

Me...

7-8 mile puddle jumper early this AM with a few knuckleheads. Chilly, kind of like the morning of the Boston Marathon minus the wind. Fun to have company when the rain is coming down steady.

Swim after work. I hope!

Rock it to the weekend, Tri-spokers!

Bonus: Speaking of knuckleheads... Yesterday after work I met two other brave soliders for the first open water swim of the season. Water temp was 53 at a depth of about 4 feet. We suited up with all the garb and then tiptoed inch by inch until we submersed. A lot of shrinkage. A lot of shivers. And even more screams. It wasn't too too too too bad until we tried to swim. The water was so cold not one of us could get our breath. So we decided to just splash around, maybe get used to the water a bit. And we did. Until we tried swimming again. Again, no breath, and again, our faces FrOzE. We logged a grand total of, maybe, 10 minutes splashing in the cold water. Think I swam for a total of 30 seconds, maybe 45 on a good day. The good thing was that I remained calm. Couldn't breath. But remained calm. Feeling better about an upcoming open water swim where the water temp is supposedly in the upper 60's. Just hope I can breath.

Re: Friday, April 27 - Rogers Hornsby
Yay! I went to the pool! What better to do on a chilly rainy day?

1120yd swim
wu: 4x20 free
main: 5x40, 5x80, 2x120 free
cd: 5x40cd free

It might not look like much but every trip to the pool that I walk away from is a huge accomplishment for me. This was also my longest swim workout of the year. Ok, I just started and it was only my third one but it was still the longest.

Good workouts to all and good luck to any racers this weekend.

Re: Friday, April 27 - Rogers Hornsby
Big mojo to everyone racing this weekend!

Thor, your swim yesterday reminds me of my first OW attempt. Hmm... maybe it was the cold and not the lack of visibility that turned into an "attempt." I definitely remember that "can't catch my breath" but still calm feeling. Weird combo.

I seem to have inherited Reg's run of crapitude tonight. 4 miles. Calves never loosened up. Warmth and hoomididity kept me annoyingly slow. But like a slow first PR, a run of crapitudinous proportions tonight, increases the odds that the next one will be better.
