Re: Sprint/Oly Trainers week of April 30
Hi guys! Just popped in to say hello. Swamped at work but getting the workouts in. Unfortunately not too much time to waste on-line.

5M run yesterday and I'll be heading to the pool tonight for 1500 m.

Good workouts all!

Re: Sprint/Oly Trainers week of April 30
Yes, Big Sur was gorgeous!!! I don't feel like I have much to say for a RR, but here goes...

It was quite a weekend trip for us, 3 dogs in a cottage in Carmel Valley. We hadn't expected to have the puppy till after the race, but that's just how it went. Anyway, spent Friday and Saturday just relaxing and watching hockey.

I was on a shuttle to the start line by 3:45am on Sunday. What a way to celebrate turning 30, huh? Milled around with everyone else at the start from 5:00 till the race start at 6:45. Still couldn't quite believe I was about to run 26.2 hilly miles - even though I'd trained pretty well for it, the combination of work, exhaustion, and potty training a puppy had meant very little training in the last 2 weeks of the taper.

And then we were off! Through the redwoods, trotting along, watching a bazillion people pull off to the sides of the road to pee. Around 5 miles in, we got to see fog out at the coast. The wind wasn't bad so weather conditions were really perfect (for me - I like it cool and cloudy).

My original plan had been to walk all the major uphils, as I hadn't done tons of hill training and wanted to finish just happy and within the 6-hour time limit. However, as I got to the hills, I felt good and decided to just run them slow. At mile 10, there begins a 2-mile continuous uphill to the top of Hurricane Point - somehow I managed to run the whole thing, but boy did I appreciate the downhill on the other side. I drank a lot of Gatorade along the way (thank goodness for an official race drink I actually like for once) and I think that kept me going when I got to the point of not being able to stomach my Cliff Shot Blocks.

Anyway, hills hills hills and more hills, we march onward. At mile 21, I finally got cell service and called my fiance to let him know about when I'd finish so he could be there with the dogs. 5 more happy miles (including a decent hill at mile 25) and the sun came out and it was a race to the finish. I saw my fiance and dogs with about 400 yds to go and then sprinted to the finish from there. I managed to break 5 hours, which was great for me given I wasn't trying for speed.

And today I'm just finally walking normally again

Nice job Molly! What a way to celebrate

Janine-Good luck w/the interview!

Chris-Welcome back, glad you enjoyed yourself. I sure hope that all of that walking counts as workouts...I am counting on it when I go in December! lol

Track meet #3 tonight...when do I get to work out? Trying to squeeze in a couple of recovery miles at lunch. Time to start running again; hopefully the legs cooperate.

Almost Friday...wait, that means another track meet! bah.

Good morning all!
Janine-let us know how the interview went.
Kymber-good luck with the clipless.

Me: Baseline test on the bike today-I did a 6.6 miles at 90 rpm in 20 minutes (after a 10 minute warm up). I'll be curious to see what the coach says about it. I followed it up with a 1 mile run. The baseline swim went OK-still struggling with doing continuous freestyle. Rest day scheduled for tomorrow.

Good day all!

Jen: Uh... I need cletes? I have the pedals that are clip in on one side and then pedals on the other. Shimano? And I think they came with cleats? I dunno. I haven't figured it out yet.

Tammy: Sometime we will need to hook up. I could drive down to the danskin course. I dont know that area well... I did run the course a couple weeks ago. Felt humid and there was headwinds no matter which way you went!!!

Chris: Welcome back. We want pics. Not of you... of the food

Great workouts all!

I did my swim last night. 1000 meters. Did 50m time test in 1 minute. Not happy about that because there's not any improvement. I am having my stroke critqued next week.

This morning I broke the stem where you pump up your tires off my bike trying to pump the **** tire. I am such an idiot. So I went to the bike store and paid the cute 20 year old bike guy in sexy lycra to change the tube for me. And then he introduced me to the wonders of CO2. Once I got that fixed, I did a 10 mile ride. Ride was great and I didn't push it. The last mile is all uphill though and that really got the blood pumpin I still am using my brakes on the downhills. I'm such a chicken.

Oh... question: When you are aero... do your legs umm... hit your boobs? I'm wondering if I am doing something wrong. LOL And lets not get into a discussion about my boob size ok?

There are a THOUSAND things I should be doing instead of posting here btw....

Molly, congrats for Big Sur!!

Janine, how did the interview go?

Kymber, do you love your clipless already?

Julie, can't wait to start biking to the gym for some combined workouts... but still too cold out here in NJ.

For me, yesterday an easy brick (don't want to push too hard after the long break)... 11 mi ride + 4 mi run. I got very upset though... After 2 weeks of gorgeous weather in Italy (80-90 deg daily), I really hoped I'd find some spring back home. Still, I had to face a freezing wind yesterday which made the ride quite an ordeal. I'm sick sick sick of the weather.
Today I went to the pool and had 2 nice breakthroughs.. my longest distance ever (1000m), and longest non-stop swim (300m).

Re: Sprint/Oly Trainers week of April 30
Kymber- Please tell me he didn't fill your tube with CO2??? He shouldn't have-- it leeches out of your tire much more quickly than air. When you get a flat out on the road, CO2 is a great way to fill a tube to finish the ride, but when you get home, you should empty the CO2 from the tube, and re-fill it with an air pump. It's funny-- the night before my race a couple weeks ago I went out to give my bike a once over and my stem had broken off-- I don't know how or when I did it-- I was just glad I found it the night before- not at 5am on race day! I'm down to just one spare tube now-- have to go get a couple more to have on hand. It was my first flat! (glad it happened in my garage- not on the road, btw).

60 mile, 4 hour ride for me. I wasn't going for speed (clearly), but I was still surprised at the 15mph average-- I expected I'd have done at least 17. Oh well-- I guess I was enjoying the state forest too much! It was freakin' gorgeous, btw. And this place has the absolute best road surface in the state. Worth every hill I climbed.

have a great night!
Jen

Coming up for some quick air again (work continues to be rough)....

4M easy run today and then 2000 m in the pool this evening. I have a ride buddy for my Monday rides! A coworker wants to get back into biking shape and just bought a road bike. It will keep me honest for what should be easy spin days instead of hammer fests.

It's Friday eve!

Re: Sprint/Oly Trainers week of April 30
Jen-Nice ride, I know that you were hoping to be a little speedier, but 60 miles is quality distance. I hope to follow your lead and get some consistency on the bike.

Hobey-Isn't it great to have a 'buddy?' A friend of mine decided he was fat (so not true) and he wanted to start biking again. DH and I made a date w/him for a couple of weeks from now. So, the pressure is on for me to start moving b/c he would completely make fun of me for riding slow

Chris-GREAT JOB on the swimming. I missed hearing about your breakthroughs. You're my swim twin on CR...how dorky does that sound?! lol

Still haven't done anything this week, other than 800y on Tuesday...this is ridiculous. Have to run tonight though, I promised DH I would pace him for 3 miles. Even if he doesn't run, I am losing my mind. Need to move.

Funny story, last night at our track meet I was talking to one of our throwing coaches about football. I mentioned that I thought it would awesome to be a strenght/conditioning coach for a football team...and he asked if I wanted the job?! Probably not, since it will conflict once I increase my office hours this summer/fall--but how cool would that be?! Makes the wheels turn...

TGIF!

Re: Sprint/Oly Trainers week of April 30
Alicia... when my longest swim is 1000m and longest ride is 22mi, it would be disappointing not to have a breakthrough every week, right? Today I'm planning to try to swim non-stop for 750m and time it, just so I know where I stand. I'll do whatever it takes, even with breaststroke breaks, just want to convince myself I can cover the distance.

And also Alicia... why not switch to a trainer career? :-)

Re: Sprint/Oly Trainers week of April 30
Tamster- Let us know how the race goes. Is it this weekend?

Pich- You'll get better on the swimming, don't worry.

Sparty- I was a total slacker this week, so don't feel bad missing your spin class. I hope to go to my first spin class next week. Ought to be fun.

Janine- Way to go in the wind. I've done that before, not fun, but you do what you gotta do. You never know what the weather will be on race day. LOL on the movies! That commute sucks. I hope you get the job closer.

Kymber- Stepping up to clippy shoes, huh? (another pun!) I don't even have toe clip thingys on my pedals ? nothing holding my feet on! I think we threw them away a few years back thinking I wouldn't use them on a mountain bike. I sure wish I had them now. I can get some from REI. I know nothing about all the different bike shoes. Your handlebars might be too low. Try raising them slightly and see if you are still hitting. I need to raise mine because I slide too far forward on my seat, and it hurts! I don't have aeros, so I don't know if I'd have that problem. Do you have the weird stems on your tires? My MIL did the same thing. She has had a time with her tires. She has gotten two flats and the stem broke off. The bike is brand new! They quit making the XS frame in the bike she really wanted, so this one is supposed to be better, but she's having bad luck. Swimming takes a long time to improve in, so be patient. Some coaching might help, though.

Julie- My pool is less than a mile from my house, so no long ride there, but I can do a loop around the pool/park. I should try that.

Chris- DH has been to Italy. He stayed in Pisa. I didn't get to go because I was working at the time. I'd love to go sometime, though. I've just done Germany, Austria, and France. Of course you can cover the distance (swimming)!

Jen- My run felt better after my bike too. I could have run forever, and I could have biked much longer.

Molly- Awesome race! I may do a marathon someday, or not. Happy Birthday!
Jen- I don't even have a spare tube yet!

Hobey- I'm riding with a friend on Sunday. We're going to do a 15M hilly route. I have to go drive it today because we've not done it before.

Alicia- I'm thinking of becoming personal trainer once my son is in school. I think it would be fun! DH thinks I'd be really good at it too. I've already looked into certification, etc...

I've been pretty swamped this week. DDs fiesta birthday party is tomorrow. I was stupid and sat on the floor for several hours cutting fabric to make ponchos. Now my sciatic nerve on both sides is killing me (I have a history of sciatic nerve problems, so I should have known better!)

Only 2 workouts this week. I skipped my swims because of no time, plus the weather has just been nasty. Today I did 30 mins./7.75M on the stationary (level 9 -- I'm increasing every day) and some weights, but that's it. I'll do a LR tomorrow morning in the humidity then a bike with my friend on Sunday afternoon. I guess I haven't done too bad this week, then. I only didn't do my swim. I was feeling really lazy.

Great workouts everyone!! I promise to do better next week once this birthday party is over! I gotta go clean now!

Kelli

Re: Sprint/Oly Trainers week of April 30
YESSSS I did it!!!
I managed to swim 750m non-stop!! (my previous best was just 300m)
Took it very slowly... I thought I'll have to do a few length breaststroke, but I only had about 3 breaks, and for only 4-5 strokes. Time was 20:05, but I"m sure it's under 20, if I deduct the seconds between start watch and start swimming, stop swimming and stop watch... I'm happy with this, I'm sure I can do a lot better since I have another month to train, plus I always do much better in races than in training.

Re: Sprint/Oly Trainers week of April 30
Molly: Congrats on big sur! What an amazing marathon that must be to run. And difficult. Those hills would be the end of me no matter how inspiring the view! Congratulations!!!

Alicia: When is track meet season over? Dang girl... seems like it's REALLY busy for you. I think the training job sounds really cool... what a way to marry up passions!!! You should think about it! How much extra time would it take? Would you do it instead of coaching track or with it?

Jen: No they didn't fill it with CO2. But thanks for posting that because I didn't realize you cant do that. I bought one of those nifty gadgets and several little tubes so I would have used that until I could figure out what the heck Im doing wrong with the pump. I am tire challenged. Here I was worried about changing a flat. Uh... I need to be worried about having to pump my tires! Amazing ride girl... do not say "clearly"...because I look at that ride and think WOW. 60 miles. That's awesome. I wish you lived by me and could ride with me and push me! (uh... push me to go faster not actually push me like on a tricycle LOL)

Hobey: You? Hammerfests? You overachiever!

Chris: Great wisdom about not having a breakthrough every week. I know I will feel that way. We need to enjoy the process versus just thinking about the achievement at the end. (Kymber says to herself). And congrats on your 750 meters! I knew you could do it. Never doubted it for a minute. You are embracing your inner dolphin

Kelli: I can totally see you as a trainer I have not been using the cages either. I've been pedalling just with my tennis shoes. I am trying to convince myself Im going to be like 2mph faster after I am out with my big girl shoes.

Pich: Good luck with your test tomorrow!!!

Me: Rest day for me. Rest being kind of a misnomer considering how busy life is.... but I didn't work out. I have not lost a single freaking pound in the 9 weeks I've been training but I took my measurements and I lost an inch and half off my waist. (I did lose .5% of body fat) My skinny jeans are getting looser!!! In other fashionista news - I also wore my tri outfit to the pool earlier this week when I did the brick and I didn't like the way it "rode up" during the run. So it's back to the drawing board (and whip out the credit card) to find something that is LONG but will not cause a drag in the water. I'm sorta wondering if I should just wear my swimsuit, pull on bike shorts then put on different shorts in T2 to run in. The fashion decisons are mind boggling.
