Saturday, May 12 - Berlin blockade lifted

On May 12, 1949, an early crisis of the Cold War comes to an end when the Soviet Union lifts its 11-month blockade against West Berlin. The blockade had been broken by a massive U.S.-British airlift of vital supplies to West Berlin's two million citizens. (history.com)

Me today - 3600m master swim workout. Was in the middle of one of my sprint 50s, looked over and saw one of the fast guys doing an easy lap and I was just barely going faster than he was. Oy vey - swimming sucks.

Later today a 1:30 easy bike spin that I skipped yesterday. Ended up taking the entire day off yesterday and it felt good!

Have a great weekend everyone and good mojo to those of you racing!

Mike

Re: Saturday, May 12 - Berlin blockade lifted
Glorious but fairly windy day here in New England, with the sun poking out half the time between fast-moving high clouds.

Good luck this weekend, racers!

PlatzMan: I hear you about those fasties in the water. But that rarely happens to me. And not because I'm fast; rather because where I swim there are few solid swimmers

x: Great speed on the bike!

Me...

Windy day must mean only one thing: a planned long ride. And what a ride it was!

104 mile ride. 40 solo miles to club ride, was late getting to starting point by 15 minutes, and continued my work-rate high pace catching up. Finally did. And just in time for the three fastest of the bunch to ask me if I wanted to go longer than the rest of the group. From there we went out to Crane Beach, peaked at the waves crashing to shore, then hammered on. Left my peeps at mile 83 for the ride home. Hammered just about the entire way. I mean a serious hammer. My legs are now DEAD. The wind was very tough at times. Felt strong until mile 80-85, when the hills would get me but I was still able to push hard on the flats (with wind at back) and slight downhills.

Total time was 5:13:30, which is likely a touch misleading. That time included several times where we rolled around waiting for others. To counter it, that time also included a few breaks, which in turn meant we could push pace more. Spent all but, maybe, 20 minutes leading

Followed immediately by...

3 mile brick run. The game continued. With dead legs coming off the bike and little strength on hills, I wondered if my legs would respond to run. The run hurt, but my legs indeed moved, just like last weekend at Devilman. Not sure how long I could've held pace (guessing somewhere between 7:00 to 8:00 min/mile).

Good workout for the books. 2nd century ride. Gives me GREAT confidence leading into Coeur d'Alene, especially if weather turns sour, which is always possible through May and into June here in the Northeast, knowing I have all the long rides I need -- just not all the long ones I want.

Have an amazing weekend, Tri-peeps!

Life-forced rest day for me. DW did good this morning at her HM, finished in 2:19 with two potty-stops. Now it's vacation time and we're headed into the wilds, so I'll see all you chumps in a week!!!

Hey matt, you didn't ask permission for a vaca!! No fair!

For me, got to be guinea pig for bike course of a new 1/2 Iron with about 30 others. A local friend picked me up and we went north an hour to the start. This race is 6/10 and I was considering doing it as a training day and figured this would be a great way to get a feel for the course.

56 miles in 3:26, as per coach, 100% Z3 or less. I was hanging with my friend, else I would have finished sooner, but it was a good thing I didn't because I was really a challenging course and I'd probably have busted my HR limits. First and Last 12 miles had some serious hill action. The ENTIRE trip out (it seemed) was into some significant winsd (11 steady gusting to 17).

then 40min run.

It was kind of neat being part of this, we got to chat with the RD before and after, gave him feedback. Also got to hang with many very experienced triathletes.

this made up my mind, I'm not doing this race 6/10. Or at least I'm not doing the run. The run course is nothing but hills.

So, if I do this race, it will be iDNF (intentional DNF) where I would do swim/bike and bail on the run. Might be more social than racing It's close enough I would certainly like to support another 1/2 iron in our area - especially an early season. It's a welcome addition.

Have a great weekend all!

Re: Saturday, May 12 - Berlin blockade lifted
What a beautiful day here in central IN! Got on 70 miles on my bike....and then, 5 miles from home, blew out my rear tire. Puncture of some sort. No problem, or so I thought. Pulled out the bad tube, checked the tire, got out my new tube, and replaced. Went to use my CO2 cartridge....and the thingy didn't work. Wouldn't screw down tight enough to break the seal properly. Tried another cartridge. Nope.

F#@k! Called DH to come get me.....**** it, said I'd never do that.

I'm now the proud owner of a nice, portable AIR pump for my bike!!! Stupid CO2.

It's all good!

Just an easy 21.62 mile ride here. Took the time to explore some roads not-yet taken. Mostly they hadn't been taken because they don't connect through to anything. Still, fun to ride to the end of the road to find a little park I'd always wondered about from it's mention on a freeway sign. And to the end of another road to find a beautiful little cemetery nestled at the base of a mountain. Beautiful bits of nature hidden just a few miles from a major freeway.

Ride, swim, and bike-on, Multi-peeps!

Step back week so only a 5M run today. I'm pretty stoked since it seems like my HR training is paying off. I went from an 11:30 LR pace to a 9:44 today. I can almost taste a sub-25 5K.

Matt: Congrats to DW and have fun in the wilds....look out for bears.

Early am 2000 meter straight swim. Planned to some riding or running later on, but my hayfever has absolutely laid me out. Spent most of the day on my back whining. Did make it to packet pick-up for the short sprint tri on Sunday. Not sure how it will go, all the sneezing has really drained me.

Wow, Hobey, that's a great improvement! How long have you been been doing the HR training. And are you talking Maffetone-style training?

Great work!

Not strictly Maf. I calculated my zones using Pfitzinger's methods from his advanced marathoning book. Most of my easy runs are Z1/Z2 and my upper limit is only a few beats higher than my Maf rate. My LR is done in Z2/Z3.

I've been doing this since January and usually see a noticeable improvement every 8-10 weeks or so. I'm just glad to see all that wogging is paying off. I also think that my cycling ramp has played a role since I'm putting in 60-80 mpw on the bike these days.

I'm entered into a 5K in early June so we'll see since I'm doing no speedwork to lead up to it. It's the first race I've ever run so I at least want to PR the course. If it doesn't happen this year then a sub-25 will definitely be part of next year's goals.
